Bowling Green & Western Michigan - 7 - 09-10-2017 11:31 AM

After going 4-8 last year (and losing to the worst NIU team in a decade by 25), our old friends lost to FCS South Dakota to 35-27 last night.

In 14 games, they've gone from playing in 3 consecutive MAC Championship games to one of the worst programs in college football.

My point? Stop trying to fire Carey everyday. Winning consistently in the MAC is HARD. Is it possible Carey's replacement would be better than him? Sure, but it's likely whoever it is would be worse.

Western Michigan has played USC and Michigan State in their first two games, two tough opponents (MSU less so than USC). Let's check in on how replacing Zach Terrell and Corey Davis is going.

Jon Wassink: 22/48 (45%), 146 yards (3.04 Y/A), 0 TD, 2 INT.

WMU's leading receiver has 5 catches for 54 yards.

With Idaho and Wagner the next two weeks, I have no doubt WMU is going to get healthy, but their QB situation is something worth keeping an eye on.

After how many consecutive bowl appearances we still lost our 2016 opener to a Wyoming team that everyone on this board assumed would be an easy win. A loss to WIU at home followed. Yet there were those on this board predicting a win over Boston College this year. Some rationalized the loss because BC had a strong defense.....oh yeah, did the staunch Eagle defense stay behind in DeKalb, because going home to lose 34-10 to Wake Forest would suggest otherwise. By your rationalizing, I imagine you're picking BC over Notre Dame this Saturday when the Irish go there.
You're going to knock BGSU for what followed three MAC Championship appearances when those are our same last three MAC Championship appearances during which we lost two of three to them?
Since we last played in the MAC Championship -- when we lost to BGSU 34-14 -- the Huskies' record for the last 17 games is 6-11.
Sorry, but nothing you said backs up the notion "Winning consistently in the MAC is hard."
BGSU lost at Michigan State and then had a lousy game at home against South Dakota, and chances are the Falcons will lose this week when they visit Northwestern, which will be smarting from a loss at Duke. So if we lose to Nebraska and San Diego State, the season is lost?
What the hell does WMU losing on the road to USC and Michigan State really say about the Broncos' chances in the MAC? Name me any MAC team that would have started the year winning those two games on the road.
Why exactly is it "likely whoever (would replace Carey) would be worse."? Doesn't it depend on who gets hired? Are you saying our AD is incapable of finding someone better?

Yes, AD would find it very difficult to replace Carey with the money that we would pay the new coach. To blame Carey for the two triple OT losses last year and a missed field goal is crazy. Compare to BGSU last year and most likely this year NIU rocks! Last year NIU was 1 loss away from another Bowl game. This year NIU looks very promising to get another post season bid.

RE: Bowling Green & Western Michigan - cagy cager - 09-11-2017 12:47 AM

sterling, you and 7 are crazy to think you can talk positive on here about NIU or its coach...the idea that we lost to an ACC team when a FG hit the cross bar with under a minute left sent most of these folks into a frenzy............as if any NIU players were offered scholarships by ANY ACC teams. Most seem to think NIU fans are entitled to continue the fantastic run the Huskies had and have no perspective of the school's history, the MAC conference or just how effing hard (and lucky) it was to have such huge success for so long......most would have never survived as Cubs' fans.

RE: Bowling Green & Western Michigan - Dtownboys - 09-11-2017 01:00 AM

Things can change quickly from week to week. BC might really suck after all or they were looking ahead to Notre Dame. Either way you can't take much from it this early in the season. Coaching does matter at this level but it comes down to the players. Bowling Green had two good coaches ina row with Clawson and Babers. Neither has done anything great at their next stop. They had a great qb that won games. Players have to execute. No matter what we have a tough road ahead. We needed the BC win just because 5 MAC wins will be real tough to get.

I think it's just frustrating because too many times NIU has to overcome coaching to be competitive. It's on players to execute but coaching should put players in an optimal position to succeed. With our head coach, he almost sets players up to fail.

Just like expecting to find a Lynch or Harnish with every 2 star recruit, finding a really good coach AND keeping him is difficult at MAC pay. The expectations some of you have don't match reality. If you could give me 4-5 years of Lynch and a Harnish starting this year, we'd go on another great run and Carey would look like a decent coach. I'll rationalize th lost to Wyoming....they were pretty good in 2016. To WIU...Graham. The loss to BC...Graham(or more so lack of a good QB on the roster. Not justbRyans fault.). Yes recruiting is on Carey...but 2 star qbs who turn out to be studs are hard to find. It's a lot of luck.

snowflakes don't want to fire the worst coach in college football? Yea, can we become bad, sure, but your losing is guaranteed when you have incompetence. NIU has had incompetence at all levels for a few years now. From our thieving President, to an AD who hired the last guy in the room when Doeren left. You lose because you create a culture of losing. The last few years have been a losing culture at NIU from all levels and our losing is well deserved.

Only way to change that is to bring in winners. Eventually head coach Lynch will do that because he's a winner.

fyi, Compher hired Carey..... Frazier gave him the extension until 2019, but Compher actually hired him after Doeren left.

I loved watching lynch play. Great athlete and competitor. But not a winner. He choked on big stages.

Recent QBs 2 MACC composite numbers:

Matt Johnson 72%, 314yds, 3.5 tds, 1.0int, 194rtg
Chandler H. 57%, 266yds, 3.0 tds, 0.5int, 172rtg
Jordan Lynch.53%, 215yds, 1.0 tds ,1.5int, 103rtg

Those are his good bowl numbers. They go down in the next two bowl games. Even his last audition for the pros in the east west shrine game he folded.
Jordan L. 2-7, 6yds, 2 ints
Garrapolo 8-14,98yds, 0ints

Don't let idol worship cloud your analysis. Great competitor, football player and runner. But Mediocre passer who couldn't handle the big stage.

Did you ever think it might have to do with your God Rod Carey in terms of NIU's bad showings? Possibly the worst coach in all of FBS. Look how Lynch did under Doeren in MACC, he single-handedly led NIU to the Orange Bowl. I find it comical you think Carey is George Halas and yet completely rip on what could be the greatest Huskie of all time. Nice.
