3 pay day games in 1 season? New normal for some? - billybobby777 - 09-08-2017 05:57 PM

I see that Kent St has 3 pay day games in 2020:
@Alabama
@Arkansas
@Kentucky
Is this normal for a school in a conference to do? I know an Indy like NMSU or UMASS needs these to survive...1 money game in a year I understand. But 3? Does this mean that Kent St wouldn't make it as an FBS program if they didn't have the 5 million they'll receive for playing 3 money games?

I don't know that there is a "normal" here. I do know that some FCS schools have done this in the past. It doesn't impact them for the post-season, because they can still qualify for the playoff with all those losses. But for Kent, it seems to almost concede that there won't be a bowl game to worry about. Of course, going to a bowl doesn't put any money in the bank, so why not cash those big checks?

I wish ECU would do one every year. But 3 seems ridiculous.

Kent has no fans so they need to make money some way.

I was actually shocked to see a couple Kent State fans at Clemson Saturday.

Of course they probably moved to SC a decade ago but it was still surprising.

They must be trying to audition for the SEC.

They could be competitive in the East

The East is doing some better. Cocky has a QB. Missouri can score but has no D. Kentucky makes you earn it these days. Vandy actually has some game. And Georgia's D is quality. The offense has yet to truly prove itself. It's only Florida that's mired in the Swamp.

It means the State of Ohio is looking very seriously at institutional transfers of money.

Maybe they are upping their SOS for the Access Bowl.COGS

However, just think the position they would be in if they won those games. I wish the stronger teams in the MW would play more games against the P5. If they win theybset themselves up for playoff consideration.

Or feel that they can get an AAC invite because the SEC recognizes them as a worthy P5 opponent for scheduling purposes like Army. 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 04-jawdrop 04-rock 03-shhhh 04-cheers

To be fair, though, one of those is Illinois. So while it is a buy game, it is on par with one of their tougher MAC games.

This is nothing new. Other G5 teams do it once in a while too. Western Michigan played Michigan, Michigan St, and Indiana in the late 2000s. PJ Fleck's first year with us, when we went 1-11, we played Northwestern, Michigan St, and Iowa.

An ideal G5 OOC schedule should look like
1.) vs top Power 5
2.) FCS
3.) vs bottom Power 5
4.) vs Group of 5

Yes, but IMO a "payday" game is different from merely playing a P5. E.g., if Boise plays at Oregon State, they may get a nice check for doing so, but it's not a payday game because Boise has a legit chance to win it. *On paper*, it's a competitive game.

In my book, payday games are games that are viewed as having essentially no value to the lesser-division team playing it other than money, as even they know that unless lightning strikes (e.g., Appalachian State > Michigan), they have almost no chance to win. On paper, it appears to be an obvious mismatch. That doesn't mean that every so often the payday team doesn't win, but it's just viewed as an extremely unlikely outcome.

E.g., two years ago, when my FCS Southern University played at Georgia, that was a classic "payday" game. Everyone knew it was going to be non-competitive, SU took the game to cash a big check, Georgia gave us the game to get an easy win before a home crowd and see our peerless marching band at halftime (that was actually in the contract, theoretically, we could have left half our football team at home, but we had to bring our full band to the game).

Nick Sabah has some ties to Kent State, so this will not be their first trip to Bryant-Denny.

Pretty strong ties. Its his alma mater, where he earned two degrees and played college football, and started his coaching career, so it's no accident that he's scheduled them a few times.

IIRC, he was on campus as a student at the time of the shootings in May, 1970.

Akron has the following in this order:

@Nebraska
@Northwestern
@Iowa State(which technically does not count)

We may need the $$$, but at this price?

Why not, is it a 2-1 / 3-1 rather than a buy game?
