Well Hopson blew that game - Reggie Favre - 09-02-2017 07:02 PM

Had he started Giggs like he was suppose to do, we win that game going away. not even CLOSE! ruined a special season. Ill give him credit other than that. Defense played great. O-Line was very competent. Offense is loaded with talent. We will roll through CUSA as long as Griggs is QB. Kentucky is prob awful but can't be worse than the other teams we play this year (other than TN). I kind of feel the way I did EJ's first game against Nebraska when he pulled the starting QB for his boy, when we were in the game. This is just reversed a little. No doubt we win this game with Griggs starting. We played 2 quarters of offense vs 4 quarters for Kentucky - and we out gained them in yardage. Should be a good season the rest of the way at least - unless Neon Keon plays QB for us some more.

there are so many others....the fake punt was beyond tard.....

Hop is joke of a head coach....the one's that actually do the work are solid....

how you start KH is outside of normalcy.....that boy is as dumb as a rock in the pocket....

RE: Well Hopson blew that game - EagleX - 09-02-2017 07:07 PM

we picked the wrong QB to start the first game, no question.

Or, you could make it simple and say turnovers and stupid penalties lost that game. ?

no. because that happens every game, every season and is on the players. this decision to play Keon an entire half is inexcusable and on the coach.

Would have won regardless of that if we don't give away a whole half of football on offense.

RE: Well Hopson blew that game - Reggie Favre - 09-02-2017 08:03 PM

its really sad for the team / players. they played their hearts out and did all they could. there was no overcoming that 1st half Keon offense.

RE: Well Hopson blew that game - Cyc - 09-02-2017 08:13 PM

Turnovers and penalties are the calling card of poorly coached teams.

RE: Well Hopson blew that game - EagleX - 09-02-2017 08:15 PM

this game was winnable.

actually, that season had to be 2013, Monks first year. EJs year (2012), he ended up playing about 5-6 QBs, but Mullens wasn't on the team.

RE: Well Hopson blew that game - HarborPointe - 09-03-2017 01:24 PM

4 fumbles with 3 of them lost are too many. The timing of Ito's was devastating. OTOH, there were probably quite a few teams with a -2 turnover margin in their opening game this weekend, and some of them probably won. It happens, and the most important thing is it's fixable. I was under the weather and ended up staying home & watching on TV. One of the announcers observed Farrior has to get the ball to the QB better.

The penalties were pretty even both in number and yardage, and frankly a few at the end looked like an SEC crew trying to bail out their team. Furthermore, in the grand scheme of things for an opening game, I'd rather the players start out too agressive and have to tone it down than come out of the box timid and have to work the other way. Some of the best teams in college football every year are also among the most penalized. Somebody (Matt Hinton maybe?) did a really good analysis on that a while back.

I do think the faked punt was the wrong call given the circumstances. We were just starting to give ourselves a chance to win. Don't help their field position. Just kick it, hold them, and take your next shot. I tend to give a coach the benefit of the doubt on that kind of thing, though. We convert it, and everybody's loving Hopson for being so ballsy. In his 2nd year, I can forgive him. Just don't make a habit of it going forward.

What really screamed "POOR COACHING" was the sequence where we had the delay of game followed by a time out followed by a false start penalty. Everybody has to be more focused than that. It was inexcusable and may well have cost us 4 points and a crap ton of momentum. The LBs biting on the play fake to allow a TD pass twice on what looked like the same play wasn't very encouraging, either.

What singularly cost us the game above everything else, though, was starting Howard over Griggs. I cannot see a shred of logic behind that unless they just weren't convinced Griggs could throw well enough coming off the bad finger. That's still no excuse because they should've gone into the game knowing one way or the other. Even beyond that, Griggs' worst throw wasn't discernibly worse than Howard's best one, so my gosh, at least give him a shot, and if he can't do it, THEN go to Howard, and not the other way around. We walked into a gunfight with our best weapon still in the trunk of the car. It's mind-boggling.

agree with all the above....you condensed what many of us have posted....

as usual, well done....

then there's this from hop-a-long....

http://www.sunherald.com/sports/college/conference-usa/university-of-southern-mississippi/article171049962.html

Quote:"It was a tough loss, a hard fought loss," USM head coach Jay Hopson said. "We played pretty well, but we just didn't execute on some things. We had turnovers and problems with (letting receivers get free on defense). On a whole, we played pretty physical football."

Quote:"(Howard) was healthy the whole summer and was really solid toward the end (of fall camp)," he said. "We decided to go with him. At halftime, we decided to put Kwadra in and let him roll. Both men definitely did some positive things."

Hopson said he wasn't ready to commit to naming a starting quarterback.

USM lost three of its four fumbles in the game and all proved crucial in the outcome.
