Surprises with the lineup. - surfsalot - 08-23-2017 09:17 PM

I predict a lot of people will be surprised with the starting 5. Hearing things about certain kids progressing faster than expected.

Give us a tidbit.

Who is an example of someone you hear is progressing surprisingly well?

Elmore would be a really nice surprise.

The above lineup does not surprise me

That looks like winner to me

Elmore starting at the 4 would be a huge surprise considering how little he did last year. That lineup looks very promising if he can truly contribute.

Hearing that Estime' is looking pretty good as well as Fornes. Also hear that Elmore is down 20lbs since the new strength coach came on board. Heard Alex Riley say the staff is high on Elmore on one of his Facebook broadcasts.

Good to hear positive things about Ellmore. Seems as if he could be a good fit for a tad bit different system.

If I were a big man, I would be very happy that Joe Wolf is on the staff.

Hearsay is good and all, but I sure would like to hear from someone who has actually seen these guys in action recently.

HUH????

You're the one that started this thread, and your only other post on the matter are that you "heard something".

You're confusing me here boss.

Haha. I have only heard these things. I want someone who has seen something to speak up.

Oh okay. The post above sounded like you were dismissing the hearsay of what's going on, thus the confusion.

Not sure how new you are to this time of year as a Seahawk fan, but it gets quiet over the summer and then we all yearn for info this time of year. There's not really anything solid on basketball info until we get closer to the season and/or Midnight Madness and a exhibition game or two. Gotta pace your anxiety and eagerness. 04-cheers

From what I saw last year, Elmore has a very good release of the ball with good shot presentation from the perimeter. I have no doubt about his potential shooting ability. If he can embrace inside play and all the goes with that, he can be a good one. Fornes is a guy that I've always been strong on, especially offensively. He looks stronger now and is a good shooter/scorer. If he can continue to improve his defense and is also willing to use not only his skill, but his body going to the hole like a TJ Carter, he has a real shot to be very good too. It's good to hear that Estime is progressing. He's only a freshman so there's a steep learning curve. He looks to be a very capable shooter and I hope that he can be good in transition as well. He was well regarded by ESPN as someone that can be good in transition and looks the part, but he's so young. Gary looked like a guy with a really good stroke too that has good IQ and passing skills also. He's just a freshman so you can't expect too much until he gets more seasoned. Richmond has experience and is athletic so I'd expect him to play and you may see Brown in there too as a backup PG as he has experience, speed and skill.

This team will be fun to check out, but fans have to be a bit patient with all of the new roles. We aren't the top dog for the first time in a while due to all of the players graduating and CJ departing. Still, it's a new era and a chance to evolve. I'd like to see the program work towards getting more defensive stops, get more caroms but still look to run. It's good to have Talley around as a senior leader that is a winner. That's something that gets overlooked sometimes. And, we still have Cacok which is huge-hope the other bigs will be ready. Hopefully we can avoid any major injuries and be competitive right away.

I would think the bigs realize how valuable Wolf is to them. He has trained a lot of talented guys.

RE: Surprises with the lineup. - billthebighawksfan - 08-26-2017 01:27 AM

He's gonna help all of them and give them the right mentality, I hope. We need to establish a "big" mentality to move forward as a program. Yes, play fast, but don't forget the bigs. I like it and liked what UNC was about last year. It's throwback, but hoops doesn't change really if you think about it. It's about balancing things out and we might just be going in that direction. Let's see...

RE: Surprises with the lineup. - seehawk83 - 10-01-2017 10:01 AM

Elmore came from a small, 2A high school so the transition to D1 basketball was quite a leap. That transition is usually more difficult for big men. Remember Craig Callahan's freshman year? Plus, our pressing, up tempo style of play last year with a lot of experienced players used to the pace left Elmore looking a bit lost in the bit of playing time he had. No inside info here, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a completely different looking player this season with a more traditional style of play and the help of Joe Wolf. His HS/AAU highlights showed he was a guy that could definitely shoot it, had a fair amount of mobility, plus looked comfortable in the post. Not unlike Callahan.

Most every big we have had as a freshman that played well for us did not start to really shine until their second year. Think back on them - Gary Cooper, Danny Davis, Brian Rowsom, Matt Fish, Vlad Kuljanin(sp?), Craig Callahan, Devontae Cacock - all started slow but came on to do very well for us. At our level it takes at least one year sometimes more for a big to develop. If he was capable of dominating as a freshman he'd most likely be at a bigger program.
