Just witnessed something pretty unbelievable - BeagleUSM - 08-22-2017 01:32 PM

Ok, so I'm in this class right now and the professor is going through the roll. Just getting people to introduce themselves since this is only 2nd time we've met this year. Name, major, hometown, etc.

There are a couple football players in here. Wydale Flott introduces himself and says he's from Mobile, AL. The professor then says "Roll Tide!" and mentions that she's a huge SEC football fan.

Later there was a student that yelled "War Eagle" after his intro and another one said he's an Ohio State fan. Had someone say he's from Hoover, AL and the prof said "that's where John Parker Wilson (former Bama QB) is from". Remember that there are a handful of football players (and one baseball player) in this class. I'm sure they are impressed.

God help us.

I have, more than once, confronted a professor about overt support of a different school. Especially if it is not their alma mater. I always kept it respectful and explained the ways in which their comments could harm the University. They typically saw things my way after a good conversation about it.

Actually, it looks like the guy that yelled War Eagle is a member of the football team. Might even be a starter.

On second thought, maybe he was just trying to needle the prof.

I thought that too, until I found this guy on the Twitters and searched his username with the search terms "Auburn" and "War Eagle". Lot of stuff came up.

At the 2000 Alabama game at Legion Field, an SUV parks next to us with Mississippi tags and USM faculty sticker, Whole family gets out dressed in Bama gear. Both husband and wife said they were USM grads (wife worked at USM) but huge Alabama football fans. Gave us a ROLL TIDE as they walked away. Eagles win 21-0. Think they were already across state line when got back. That was a fun game to attend.

I'm sorry you have to have a no-class ass for a prof...what class is this might I ask?

My go-to retort to SEC (and other P5) fans has become, "I prefer college sports."

RE: Just witnessed something pretty unbelievable - AndreWhere - 08-23-2017 06:27 AM

I don't have a problem with professors being loyal to their undergraduate school. If I somehow became a professor at some other school, I'd still (primarily at least) be a USM fan. That said, undergraduate students at USM who advertise themselves as fans of some other school's sports teams are basically advertising themselves as losers. If a kid is wearing, say, a Florida Gators hat in a USM classroom, what statement does that make? It essentially says "I wanted to go to Florida but I had to settle because I lack the intelligence, wherewithal, etc. to follow my dreams."

RE: Just witnessed something pretty unbelievable - usmstang - 08-23-2017 08:08 AM

Meh, it's a wee bit tasteless for a prof to screw with a kid who sweats his ass off everyday and is running at sunrise on frigid days. He/She obviously hasn't walked in Flott's shoes. I wonder how often this happens and how many of our prospective recruits come for visits and have current players tell them how great it is except that the profs and other students support the "P5" schools. Tragedy brought on by ignorance and/or insecurity!

I disagree Andre. Once you're an employee of a company, let's just say Apple would you go around shilling for Microsoft in your place of business?

Heck no..

She's a USM employee, and that's the only school she should be promoting, even if she is a fan of another school.

Actually yelling out the cheer of a team we play pretty frequently, while working, is pretty crass.

This instructor has both her bachelor's and master's from USM.

so we have a brainwashed (and most likely tenured) prof, providing 'the continuation' of such!?

why am I not surprised......
