@URI FB game advice - HyperDuke - 08-02-2017 04:46 PM

So after being depressed about only getting two tailgates in this coming regular season, I realized I could make a pretty easy day-trip to the URI game on 11/4.

Any need-to-know advice about local food, stadium seating, etc? Thanks to the road warriors who can help!

Hyper

Wife and I are also planning a Roadtrip to URI. Have a hotel reservation at a Hampton Inn in South Kingston just a couple miles from URI. Hope to see you there!!

Go Dukes!!

Brian

Brian, will this be your first time up there?

RE: @URI FB game advice - BDKJMU - 08-02-2017 05:52 PM

I see URI combined their Parent's Weekend and HC into the one game, vs Elon, that they have a chance of winning (maybe they have a chance vs Harvard). They'll be anywhere from 3-4 at best to 0-7 at worst heading into the JMU game.

Early Nov will likely be cold up there with fall foliage done.I'm sure you could walk up, get a ticket(s) and sit where you want in their 6,500 stadium. They do get 2 things right- no track and they play on grass. Their home side, while small, is pretty nice up against the field house.

50/50 I might come up- brother & his family live in CT..We went to the last JMU @ URI game in 2012. That was a Sept game with pretty nice weather & good by URI standards (4200+) crowd..

Hyper

Yes will be the first trip there. Try to make one away conference game each year and have wanted to try to get to URI/UNH/Maine for the last couple of years. Have no idea what to expect but that is part of the fun of a Roadtrip!!

Hyper I shared the following about URI in a previous PM and copied it since it may be helpful:

Rhode Island is such a compact state that staying a distance from the game site is not a big deal. We stayed in Warwick at the Nylo, kind of a retro warehouse trendy redo place that was something different that we liked. Others might not agree. It's on a small river. There is a lot of water in Rhode Island making it very scenic, ponds lakes rivers and bays and inlets. (Nylo has a property in Plano TX and some folks stayed there for the YSU game.)

We ate breakfast at a cool place in Narragansett called T's, http://tsrestaurantri.com/

There are tons of Diner style quality restaurants to choose from.

Newport would be a must see, there is an old Mansion Museum that might be of interest called The Breakers, if you have time. Just walking around Newport, it's older architecture, finding shops to walk in and boat views and seafood make it worth while.

We ate in Providence at a section of town with lots of good restaurants with Great Italian! Providence is so close to Warwick that it can work with a hotel location there. But I trust there are good restaurants in many spots. Providence has a good nite club feel vibe in that location. (Federal Hill).

There are a number of beaches/state parks with great ocean/bay views that you can stumble upon just driving around. I know it is a November game, but if it is sunny and not too chilly, some beach front walking to take in the scenery would work well for a time filler.

We did things all over the state and never had more than a 35 minute ride. Hope this helps.

Man, those tailgating rules are weak. No music allowed? No drinking games? I'm probably arriving 11am at earliest, so no real tailgating anyways. I guess it doesn't matter.

Went up for the last game there a few years ago. Just did it as a day trip from NNJ via Amtrak.

There's not a lot in Kingston, but you're pretty close to Newport. Providence is a really nice city. And clam cakes from Aunt Carries in Point Judith go well with a Del's frozen lemonade and/or a Narraganset. I'd bet that's true even if it's a bit chilly in Nov.

I remember in 2012 my brother and I showed up 2-3 hours before the afternoon game. I had portable bar and TV. Then Bulldog & his wife show up in their RV with a satellite big screen, so put my TV away, moved my bar & stools over and we had a big ol tailgate. The few URI tailgaters in the general lot (remember JMU fans outnumbering them) were looking at us like wow these people are serious...JMU won 32-7..

RE: @URI FB game advice - HyperDuke - 08-04-2017 06:01 PM

Just booked flights today out of DC for way cheaper than I would have imagined. Decided to just make it a day-trip for the game & was able to get round trip to PVM for just over $100. Relieved I will see at least one regular season game after NSU, despite it being a horrific opponent.

RE: @URI FB game advice - ParentofJMUMRDs - 08-04-2017 07:29 PM

Hyper

Looking forward to seeing you at the game!!

Hmmmm....I just realized I might be able to drive down for the game. I've never been to URI, but it's only 2 hours away. I'll have to wait to make sure the band I work with doesn't have a playoff game that day, but if we don't, I'll probably see you guys down there.

Hoping you are able to make it, as I want to get the inside playoff perspective in person from the guru!

Been following this board for years, but haven't joined in to post. Live in Connecticut about 1 hour from URI. Plan to go this year and would love to meet all.

Not trying to be inflammatory here, only educate...

If you go to Provincetown, just be aware that it is known for its thriving LGBT community.

Provincetown is a good 2.5 hours from Kingston, so I won't be visiting during my short day-trip. Sounds like a nice place though!
