I think Liberty should try the Boise Bowl route in the 2020 bowls. Liberty may have the money to fund the bowl teams guaranteeing 1 Mill+ payout, it could have Liberty tie-in and work a deal with other Conferences or Independents.
Liberty Main Tie-In have NMSU and UMASS as backups to Liberty.
Opponent BYU and G5. Pay more than their most their other bowls pay. Possibly pay 2 Mil and you might be able to get the ACC last bowl team.
Liberty actually might have the funding to try this. Worst case scenario, Liberty pays for the duration of the next bowl contract.
Liberty - UMASS and NMSU primary backup for Liberty then Conference Alternate for Liberty.
I could see
Year 1 - BYU - SB Alternate Tie-in
Year 2 - SB - CUSA Alternate Tie-in
Year 3 - CUSA - MAC Alternate Tie-in

Year 5 - BYU -CUSA Alternate Tie-in
Year 6 - CUSA - Mac Alternate Tie-in

Not a bad idea.
I am worried of Liberty's chances to get an at-large bid should they be bowl eligible. Our first time selected, we as a fan base will really have to go all out to get tickets, watch the game, or do something to set a standard and be desirable for bowls.
Hosting your own bowl seems cheesy at best and desperate at worst. It is much better than nothing and beggars can't be choosers so I'd totally go for it.

I could see them paying for it if they were in the bowl. If they weren't I doubt they'd agree to that.

That is the gamble. They still have to become bowl eligible but they would have a tie-in. Under the current format, they would have to have a not enough tie-in teams to qualify for a bowl. Otherwise they will have to convince existing bowls to take Liberty as a tie-in much like BYU has done with bowls.

There has been a shortage of bowl eligible teams the past few years so Liberty may not have trouble finding a bowl without a contract.

Yes, but with the Ponsettia going away, there would be no 5-7 teams needed. In addition, UAB and Coastal are now two additional FBS teams. Liberty basically replaces Idaho when they become FBS. It will be interesting if 2020 allows for new bowls.

I would look to place a bowl reasonably close to Liberty but not on campus.
Charleston or Myrtle Beach against a SBC team with CUSA or MAC as back ups.Liberty could be a secondary sponsor but start the bowl.
Basically a bunch of LU online commercials a few for their network maybe a pro faith. Get visit Myrtle Beach for example as the bowl name.
