Where were you 48 years ago today. - ncrdbl1 - 07-20-2017 09:08 AM

To this day the US is STILL the only country to have put a man on another celestial body other than the earth.

Sitting in front of the Black and White Philco TV with the rest of my family.

I was in graduate school and was home for lunch between classes, watching the moon walk.

The next year I completed my Master's and went to work for Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville. Among other tasks I did for NASA, I did thermal analysis on the Lunar Rover which was deployed for Apollo 15, 16 and 17.

So, I guess the moon walk had a profound effect on my life.

Then it's possible you knew my uncle, Starke Cline, who was in Guidance and Control at NASA in Huntsville. He helped design the Lunar Rover and his group created a gyroscope which kept us on course to the moon. Good times! 04-rock

BTW, I was 17 years old at that time. I must have been at Emory for the summer session.

My grandfather told me that the moon landing was a hoax. You mean to tell me it really happened?

Who knows. But it is curious that man has not left Low Earth Orbit since the moon landings. When will we get back into outer space? Will it happen again in my lifetime? One would think space exploration would be commonplace 50 years later. But no, it's not. Too many hurdles today that apparently didn't exist in 1969. Maybe the technology was better in 1969 than in 2017.

Headquarters Strategic Air Command - Offutt AFB, Nebraska

Watched it with family of three and friends of CONAGRA, Omaha, Nebraska

Incredible time and announced by father Walter Cronkite on the then known CBS TV. Black and white TV..... my things have changed.

Yes , the USA will be doing more in space now that we've had a change for the better. Count on it.

I saw a black and white picture of a couple standing outside their 1965 muscle car watching one of the rocket blast-offs at Cape Canaveral. When you consider that was the technology at the time ~~ just wow! How did we ever get to the moon? It was all solid state electronics at the time, right?
