The wagons are thought to be a creation of the Mennonites of Lancaster, County, Pennsylvania, and took their name from either the Conestoga River or Conestoga Township, which in turn probably took their names from a reported tribe of Native Americans in the area called the Conestoga.
While initially popular for use as migration and trade vehicles from the late 1700s through the early 1800s, they fell out of favor due to the development of railroads in the Easten U.S. and proving too heavy for use in and over the prairies of the West.
