Is that first picture of a building at the corner of 3rd and 17th with Birmingham signage a movie theater?? I went to a downtown Birmingham movie theater with a fire escape type stairway (on the side I think like that one) way back in the late 60's once.

It was a vaudeville, then movie theater. But everything I see online claims it was torn down in 1950.

Well, in that case it wasnt the movie theater that I visited. Were there any others ( beside Lyric and Alabama Theater ) that were open downtown in the 60's?

In 1948, the Democratic National Convention adopted a platform authored by Hubert humphrey of Minn. in favor of all Americans having all the Civil Rights enjoyed by other Americans regardless of race, color or any other measure. This led to the departure (walk out) of most southern delegates who were against any such "Liberal" measure. Among Alabama's delegates was Eugene "Bull" Connor who would later lead the B'ham Public Safety Department (Fire, Police and City Public Schools) during the marches in 1963.

Regarding downtown theaters, I saw movies at the Ritz, Alabama (including Mickey Mouse Club meetings on Saturdays), Lyric, Empire, Melba and the Strand. I don't remember the Newmar, and I was legally barred from the Famous and Carver. I don't remember why, but I attended something at the Temple (Zamora) theater because I remember the massive chandaleers there.

Since I grew up in Roebuck and then East Lake (went to Barrett School on Division Ave.), i don't know the western area theaters but did see movies at the East Lake and the College (one I recall was "Winchester 73" with James Stewart). it was named the College since it was only a few blocks from Howard College then.
