The Civil Conflict needs its own Wikipedia page.

UH has no rivalries... I allocated 25 for rice ut and a&m and 5 for smu tulsa ucf memphis and texas tech. Maybe one will make the list.

RE: Rivalries - BigHouston - 07-15-2017 08:39 PM

When the SWC ended Houston's rivalries went out the window... If I had to select one, two or even three from the AAC...

FOOTBALL

Temple
Navy
UCF

BASKETBALL
UConn
Wichita State (They're in the AAC now so might as well)
Temple

Interesting and unexpected. Surprised to see Temple/UCONN over SMU/Tulsa/Memphis.

SMU
We've been trying to develop something anything from SMU but nothing ever seems to develop.

Tulsa
Yes, we play them quite a bit but majority here (Houston) just don't see anything from playing them, just another game on our schedule to say the least.

Memphis
They're basically a basketball program... I could've place them in my basketball rivalry list but than again I'm pretty happy with my current choices above.

Temple? WTF?

Our rivals are Tulsa (teh), Memphis (fear), Smoo (7-Eleven), and C. Florida (winner goes to Big XII).

I like Houston as a rival. Similar schools in big cities with big markets.

RE: Rivalries - cotton1991 - 07-16-2017 06:54 AM

Houston recently has become an important football game for Memphis, just because the past couple years have seen some close games with a lot riding on the outcome. Hard to call it a real rivalry though.

Cincy in basketball because of old times sake. If Memphis were more competitive in hoops I think the old rivalry would redevelop more. Maybe you could add Tulsa to this as well.

Other than that, not too many rivalries in the AAC for the Tigers.

RE: Rivalries - Kruciff - 07-16-2017 08:33 AM

I put in Usf at 60 points, with ECU Houston Memphis Tulsa splitting 35 and FIU and FAU splitting the remaining 5

Totally forgot about Marshall, though i imagine we'll likely never play them again

The one opponent I definitely agree with you is UCF... We've had some very heated games with them, games that had some spicy meaning.

LOL... The "teh" n "fear" was recently created here in this board and you bought into it.

We have no real rivalries. Some of our old regional SWC rivals like UT and Aggie would likely raise the blood pressure of our fan base---but they won't play us. Tech is the only one that still plays us and that game will likely sell out. The reality is, because of the conference jumping and years as an Indy team, we have no true rivals. Right now--our rivals are whoever is in the spot in front of us in the standings. So, of late, that has been teams like Memphis, Temple, and Navy. Of course, that kind of "rival" will change every year.

I've been an advocate of signing a late season long term series (say 10 years) with BYU. Call it the Battle of the Cougars" and play it late in the season when BYU struggles to get games. Based on how well attended and exciting the last series with them was---I think it could really develop quicklly into a game Coog fans look forward to all year. 04-cheers

To be a rivalry you must have BOTH fan bases dislike each other and care about the match up.
We have some potential ones in the AAC as schools play each other more often.
Football
1. USF vs UCF is probably the best one even though we have played only a few times. It will get better with time and I think when we finally meet with both teams having a division title on the line will be the final push to a higher level.

2. ECU vs Navy could be one but being in different divisions hurt that chance.
3. SMU vs Tulsa or Houston could develop into one.
4. Houston vs Tulane if the Green Wave improves.
5. Memphis vs UC but once again different divisions hurt.
6. UConn vs Temple
7. Temple vs ECU

RE: Rivalries - Cubanbull - 07-16-2017 10:59 AM

For USF fans
1. UCF (6-2)obvious and it will grow more heated
2. UC (6-8) and UConn(9-5)because of the number of times we have played and old BE days
3. Temple (1-2) has heated from past two years.
4. ECU (6-1) we have some old history

From the west side we haven't played often enough any of the schools to have one stand out.
Houston 2-2
Memphis 4-5
Navy 1-1
SMU 3-1
Tulsa 1-0
Tulane 0-0

RE: Rivalries - HuskyU - 07-16-2017 11:12 AM

Like many here, we lost our biggest rivals due to realignment. In terms of the AAC schools, UCONN's are very limited at this moment...

Basketball - Cincinnati (Big East history/lots of great close games)

It's hard to really say any others in basketball or football. We have BE history with USF, but basketball has been lopsided in UCONN's favor while football has been lopsided in USF's favor. There's not much there with Temple beyond being the 2 Northeast schools. Most schools here were former conference mates so they probably have a better chance at reigniting rivalries. It will take some time for UCONN's to develop.

Really? We started playing you 22 years before you joined the swc, we have played every year except for short periods at the end of the 80s and 90s. Pretty sure you have more games against us than anyone else. We ruined bowl bids and top ten rankings for you. You were the last team to score a 100 points in a game and you did it against us. Both teams have "ran the score up" in recent history. Essentially the thing that has stayed constant for both football programs has been us playing each other through every conference we have been in.

Not saying we have to be a rival, just saying your points for dismisal seem a bit shakey.

Did you look at the chart. There are not any rivals listed for UH. I'd say thats a pretty accurate representation of the fan base. There is no team on the schedule that Coog fans point to at the start of every year. Yes, we have played Tulsa a lot. If that was going to be a "thing" with Coog fans it would be by now. When you guys are really good (like this year)---I think you'll be one we point to---but thats just following what I said---our "rival" is whoever is in front of in the standings.

There is no game that matters above all else to Coog fans on the schedule. There is no game for UH where both teams could be bad---and it would still be a "big game". There is no annual game that mimics the fan feeling present at Texas vs A&M or Ohio vs Michigan. The closest would probably be Rice....and a lot of Coog fans could care less about that one (the kids seem to like that one a lot--older fans yawn). Maybe we just define "rivals" differently.

Im not trying to insult---its just how things have worked out here. Other than the SWC---we really havent been in a conference where we would have consistent games vs regional teams that the local fans get juiced up to beat based on name alone. Of late---our fans getting juiced up has been about beating the team in front of us in the standings or beating a ranked team.
