CUSA 2017-18 Season - MT FAN - 06-29-2017 02:32 PM

How do you think we will do as a conference this coming sports year, specifically football and men's basketball? Do we finally improve in football and win more OOC games including more p5 upsets? Do we have a team in the running for best G5 bowl spot? Do we have a ranked team or maybe even multiple ranked teams? Does the bottom of the conference finally step up?

In basketball do we win more ooc games? Multiple NCAA bids? Same as football does the bottom start not sucking so bad? What's everybody thoughts for this coming year?

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - odu09 - 06-29-2017 02:44 PM

I can really only speak for ODU, but in football I highly doubt we will get any P5 upsets. We play UNC at home, that's our best chance. Considering the last game was our biggest embarrassment in school history, I doubt we will hang with them this round either. But if we were to beat anyone P5 it's them. We play VT on the road and uh .. yep.

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - Fort Bend Owl - 06-29-2017 02:48 PM

I think there is an outside chance our football team surprises some folks but I highly doubt we will get any significant OOC wins. If we struggle, we'll probably be looking for a new coach at the end of 2017.

In men's basketball, our exodus of players will hurt, but again we won't be as bad as some people think. We actually recruited pretty decent after a late start, and I don't think people realize that the 6 guys coming back have some ability.

Not that it matters a ton to many, but our women's basketball team will be very good. That's the sport I could see us upsetting top-25 teams in.

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - WKUFan518 - 06-29-2017 02:48 PM

WKU will have their chances in both sports....Football has 2 chances, but will be tough on the road even if one is against a weak Big Ten team...We have fared horrible vs. Big Ten with all being on the road.....

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - Collin_Ellis - 06-29-2017 03:07 PM

As far as Tech football goes, I think we have have a real chance at beating either/both Mississippi St or South Carolina. MSU has some talented QB but they are probably better runners than passers. I don't know much about USC other than they typically struggle offensively but typically have really good defenses. We will have to have stellar QB play and see improvements on defense. I do believe our special teams play will be better than it has in the past which will be big in these games. I can think of 2 games in the past 2 seasons vs p5 teams that were lost in large part to bad ST coverage or missed FGs.

Basketball... idk. We will be very athletic and have some good shooters along with a dynamic PG. I think we will struggle to rebound which will hurt us. Probably a top 4-5 team in the conference but nothing that would suggest anything more than what we have been last couple seasons under Konkol. We have a chance to be a really good perimeter defensive team and I would think we would be great in creating TOs and on fast breaks. Don't think we will be much in half court sets.

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - techdawg28 - 06-29-2017 05:23 PM

If we get the NY6 team (big if), I think it would be one of these teams:
La Tech
UTSA
WKU
Middle Tennessee (3 straight P5s will be tough, though)

I'd include ODU, but Va Tech and UNC.. ouch.
If Southern Miss finds a QB, their schedule might give them a chance, as well.

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - techdawg28 - 06-29-2017 05:28 PM

I think C-USA will be better as a conference this year (football). Still a few bottom feeders, but I think both FL schools will improve. I think La Tech, UTSA, WKU, MTSU, and ODU are locks for bowls (knock on wood), with USM, UNT, FAU, FIU, and Marshall possibly making a push. Maybe even Charlotte. We should be able to get 7 bowl teams and overfill our tie-ins, which would be great to do two years in a row.

I think the East especially will be exciting, with WKU, MTSU, and ODU all vying for the title, with the outside possibility of FAU, FIU, or Marshall making a surprise push. The West doesn't look as dramatic, but Tech-UTSA could be an important game. Add in USM if they find a QB.

I'm excited for C-USA 2017 and I think it will be a great year.

Why would any team replacing a QB, like USM, be a lock for a bowl and USM not? Curious.

We need a few teams to suck in conference and do well OOC, like every other conference.

Because USM hasn't won a game where Nick Mullens wasn't the starting QB since 2011, and Keon Howard lost to Charlotte and North Texas.

ODU is also loaded in pretty much every other position. They just need a decent QB to have a good year. Not to say USM doesn't have other talented players, as well, but not to the level that ODU does. (I am basing this assessment off of Underdog Dynasty's position rankings.)

As for Tech, we've seen enough good things out of Smith to be confident in him.

This isn't a shot at USM, it's just you went 7-6 last year and are replacing a generational QB with no proven winner to take his place. If your new QB is solid, you'll be a contender. If not, a bowl is your goal.

There is a possibility that Keon Howard won't be the QB. Some of the 'locks' have some big holes to fill as well. I agree USM will need to find a good QB quick, but that is every team who's replacing a QB.

Returning Starters:
TEAM TOTAL OFF QB DEF
FAU 18 9 1 9
Rice 16 8 0 8
FIU 15 7 1 8
Marshall 15 8 1 7
ODU 14 8 0 6
UTSA 14 7 1 7
Charlotte 12 6 1 6
MTSU 12 6 1 6
So Miss 12 6 0 6
La Tech 11 5 0 6
UNT 11 6 1 5
UTEP 11 5 1 6
WKU 10 4 1 6

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - BlueraiderJT - 07-01-2017 05:13 PM

In my opinion, CUSA will be stronger in football by far in comparison to the last 2-3 seasons.

I see the east with the most upshot right now. The teams I have down that will be eligible to play postseason...

WKU
MTSU
ODU
La Tech
UTSA
UNT
FAU or FIU

Wild Cards...

FIU or FAU
Marshall
UAB
USM

Ok, that seems a bit bold but all of the teams mentioned have huge upsides going into this season and since we've been members, I haven't seen this much potential in the preseason ever. Reasons for thinking this...

CUSA East

WKU - Mike White and whoever he throws to.
ODU - Great Coach and seasoned team.
MT- Brent Stockstill and Richie James.
FIU - Butch Davis
FAU - Lane Kiffin and Baylor's OC
Marshall - Had a rough year but they have talent and a good QB.

CUSA West

La Tech - Come on. They are reloading at this point. Good at QB, WR, and OL. Best in the West
UTSA - Good coach. Solid run game and good D.
UNT - Good Coach. Solid D and smart offensive game planning.
USM - They are gonna compete. Plain and simple.
UAB - They may lose a step from 2014 but Bill Clark is great and they have been licking their chops. They could also take huge steps forward.

RE: CUSA 2017-18 Season - Side Show Joe - 07-01-2017 06:47 PM

I think C-USA will play the best overall football among the G5s. I really think C-USA will have 7 or 8 bowl teams this season.

Teams I expect to be bowling...

LA Tech
Middle Tennessee
WKU
Southern Miss
North Texas
UTSA
ODU
maybe Marshall

In basketball, I think C-USA will be better. Can't get much worse... But, still just a 1 bid league.

Interesting article on our last five conference champs and a little look into this year's competitors. I'm beginning to think that FAU could be a real threat to take it all this year.

Happy to see you post this. I hope that James Harden doubles down in his visible support of Scott Pera's team, and that with Chris Paul also a Rocket, some of the Rockets buzz can rub off on the Owls.

And football. Maybe Defensive Coordinator Brian Stewart is a Magic Man, and a little defense goes a long way in C-USA West. We'll all get a first look on the ESPN national broadcast of the Sydney game. If not, I agree that Bailiff is gone, and we get to see the Administration commitment to football demonstrated in whoever we hire. With Bobby Tudor now Chair of the Board of Trustees, I would expect a very splashy football hire.

USM is picked by many publications to contend for west title, so I'm surprised how many here are not penciling them in for a bowl game.
