Rank the 2017 Schedule - GE and MTS - 06-23-2017 11:20 PM

With the excitement building over the 2018 season and the move to FBS, we must first play through the 2017 season. I thought we could rank the opponents in the order of how excited you are to play them.

1. @Baylor: Our season opener is a real gem. We travel to Texas where we want to make strong inroads with recruits, prospective students, and alumni and get to play against another Baptist school. Baylor has been on a roll lately with a Heisman winner, almost making the playoffs, and finishing in the top 10 some years. Now they are breaking in a new coach for the second year in a row and we hired their former athletic director. What better way to introduce ourselves to FBS then an opening week upset of Baylor in their house?

2. @Jacksonville State: Boy do we owe them a thrashing! Too bad they will more likely do the curb stomping again. This is a game that we can make a statement as we're leaving FCS.

3. Kennesaw State: I predict that in the coming years that KSU will be the team to beat in the Big South. Many share that feelings so it isn't original but this could be the passing of the torch as we beat them on our way out. It's also our homecoming which puts it ahead of the next entry...

4. @Charleston Southern: Our last game as FCS and it's against a team that has given us problems of late. They are breaking in a new coach this year so they will likely be down from their prior playoff-caliber teams but it's Liberty's last chance to make a statement before heading off to FBS. Hopefully it is a positive statement.

5. Presbyterian: Our last home game of the season and "Military Appreciation Day" and College for a Weekend. That's the only reason I put Presbyterian above the next entry. I will miss beating the Blue Hose and I am still angry at them for ruining our season almost ten years ago.

6. @Gardner-Webb: This could have been fifth and that's about all there is to say.

7. @Monmouth: Our last time playing the recently added Big South football member. We owe them a butt-kicking in my books but the history isn't there to put them higher.

8. Indiana State: We owe them a butt-kicking too. I hate saying that because that means other schools got the better of us too often.

9. Morehead State: Our home opener which is also "Football Alumni Weekend." Not much else to say about Morehead State.

10. Duquesne: "Family Weekend," whatever that means.

11. St. Francis (PA): Not as exciting as Duquense. It has the rare triumvirate of being "Hall of Fame Weekend," College for a Weekend, and "Band Parents' Day". Should be an easy win.

Rank the 2017 Schedule - army56mike - 06-24-2017 01:53 AM

1. @ Baylor - Because it's the big stage.
2. vs. Morehead St. - Because it's the home opener and against the far eastern team from my home state.
4. vs. Indiana St. - Because we owe them for beating us and it's a decent OOC game that we should win.
5. @ Jacksonville St. - Big team, big game, probable loss. That's why it's in the middle.
8. vs. St. Francis (PA) - Had a decent season last year.
6. vs. Kennesaw St. - Because I think they might be the team to beat in the BSC other than Chuck So.
10 @ Monmouth
9 @ GW
7. vs. Duquesne - Had a decent season last year.
11. vs. Prebyterian
3. Chuck So. - Revenge game and we need to go out with a win over them.

RE: Rank the 2017 Schedule - LibertyOrangeman - 06-24-2017 08:02 AM

1. Baylor
2. Jax State
3. Chuck So.
4. Indiana State
5. Duquense
6. Kennesaw State
6. St. Francis
7. The rest of the Big South.

My prediction is anywhere from 10-1 and 8-3 is most likely. However, in true and typical Liberty Flames fashion, we go undefeated in the Big South because it doesn't even matter.

Ain't that the truth!

Good post during doldrums of summer waiting for college FB to begin. For all the multitude of reasons stated that don't need to be repeated again, My W/L predictions, that like a betting line, subject to change:

Sep 2, 2017 TBA vs. Baylor Waco, Texas
- Loss
Sep 9, 2017 6:00 PM Morehead State Lynchburg, Va.
- WIN
Sep 16, 2017 6:00 PM Indiana State Lynchburg, Va.
- Win, only because of home game
Sep 23, 2017 7:00 PM vs. Jacksonville State Jacksonville, Ala.
- Loss, one can expecting an embarrassing loss, on the road
Sep 30, 2017 6:00 PM St. Francis (Pa.) Lynchburg, Va.
- Win, better be a win or Gill gets grilled
Oct 14, 2017 6:00 PM Kennesaw State* Lynchburg, Va.
- Win, in a squeaker only because at home
Oct 21, 2017 1:00 PM vs. Monmouth* West Long Branch, N.J.
- Loss, BSC member win can get some ink against LU
Oct 28, 2017 1:30 PM vs. Gardner-Webb* Boiling Springs, N.C.
- Win, as GW will be pumped to play LU but lacks enough to sustain 60 minutes
Nov 4, 2017 3:30 PM Duquesne Lynchburg, Va.
- Win, another Gill better win or turn up the heat
Nov 11, 2017 3:30 PM Presbyterian* Lynchburg, Va.
- Win, Presby won't have enough to last even with the desire to beat FBS bound LU
Nov 18, 2017 12:00 PM vs. Charleston Southern* Charleston, S.C.
- Loss, remember how LU played against CCU when they were head to the SBC. Same story here

That adds up to 7-4. The Indiana St game causes me concern and I'm guessing one of the BSC teams is going to be pumped against LU and sneak another win, so I'll go with 6-5

#1 Baylor
#2-11 I don't care about FCS schools and I never really have.

Its a transition season, unless you go 12-0 or 0-12 you wont remember it 5 years from now.

1 = Baylor
2-11 = Everyone else.

What are your dream road games for LU, ones that you would have to attend?

1) @ Notre Dame - Isn't that what we've always aspired to? A win would be so very nice, but competing on the same stage says so much as well.
2) @ Louisville - beating the team I grew up rooting for (and still do) would be sweet.
3) @ Kentucky - beating the team I grew up rooting against would be sweeter!
4) @ Army - I just want to see the pageantry and game day atmosphere at West Point.

These are the four road games I'd be most inclined to attend if they ever come about.

RE: Rank the 2017 Schedule - GE and MTS - 07-18-2017 09:05 PM

1. Penn State - Selfishly, I would love to see Liberty beat Penn State and start a rivalry with the Nittany Lions and I think it would benefit both as Penn State likes to recruit Virginia. Having my two favorite schools battle it out annually would be awesome.
2. Notre Dame - army56mike summed it up pretty well. Although I would prefer this list to be home/home agreements as it wouldn't feel as big time without hosting these programs. I'm not really in a position to travel to the game, though I do have relatives in South Bend.
3. - 6. North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest - With the in-laws not far, it would be pretty cool to go see Liberty at one of these venues.

RE: Rank the 2017 Schedule - Liberty Fan - 07-20-2017 07:58 AM

The Matt Rhule era with Baylor Football will begin in front of a nationally-televised audience when the Bears open the 2017 season at 6 p.m. CT on FS2 against Liberty at McLane Stadium.

Hope we can keep it respectable.

RE: Rank the 2017 Schedule - SlyFox - 07-21-2017 06:09 PM

Color me optimistic, but the more I think about this game the more confident I feel that we can sneak in there for an upset or at least a nail-biter.

I've said it multiple times, y'all are going to play better than many of your fans think. The type of offense they are going to run with Matt there isn't the same as they've ran in the past. I think they'll be trying to figure it out still. As long as y'all don't turn the ball over it should be respectable. I think y'all will keep it close at half, maybe even lead, but the second half the difference in the depth charts will show. My prediction Baylor 38-24.
