why is it always canada that manages to pull this off? Is it because American soldiers at this point say "**** it" and call an airstrike?

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - Godzilla - 06-22-2017 03:19 PM

Holy he'll what a shot! Our special forces can't let this stand we gotta beat that and bring the record back to America.

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - UofMstateU - 06-22-2017 03:21 PM

I read that earlier and couldnt believe it. It could probably take 5-10 seconds for the bullet to travel that far. Thats freaking amazing.

I think that actually is part of it. Canada isn't allowed to call in airstrikes anymore as I understand it.

Of course, the rifle is American. TAC-50.

the four highest kill shots are all anglo non-american. I'm not familiar with the UK claim but I thought the preexisting record was canadian as well. unless that graph is only preexisiting kills and doesn't include this recent event.

I know a lot of small countries have top-rate special forces because they can't project power so a special ops mission is where they will ever need to use their military so they invest heavily in those areas. I was wondering if canada decided to have a ridiculously top rate sniper training program.

Used a .50 caliber McMillian Tac .50 pushing a 750 grain Hornady round with 13,000 pounds of force at the muzzle....likely the A-Max Boat-tail projectile.

That would make your shoulder feel like you were launching a telephone pole down range.

The optics on that rig must cost more than most people's car.

That's just nuts.

I've shot a Tac 50 before and while the recoil is more than a standard rifle it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. To me the worst part was the blow-back of the gasses from the muzzle brake.

Just place semi truck exhaust pipes on the thing. 03-wink

For fun to visualize just how damn long of a shot that is.

2.2 miles is approximately 4,600 normal paces of an average person.

At an average human walking speed of @3.1 mph, it takes an average person about 20-21 minutes to walk a mile.

That means that on flat ground with no obstacles and no breaks, it would take an average person close to 45 minutes to walk from where the shot was made to the target. 45 minutes....

Or 32 football field endzone to endzone
it will take Usain Bolt 5.6 minutes running at his world record speed in the 100 meter to go 2.2 miles

If I knew someone was shooting at me from 2.1 miles away and could actually hit me, I'd be walking faster than that. I didn't read any of the articles. How long did it take the bullet to get from the shot to the target?

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - EverRespect - 06-23-2017 05:32 AM

Why hasn't someone developed a rifle/ammo "missile lock" system that would make this shot almost a gimme?

bullet flew for ten seconds at speed of 792mph

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - gdunn - 06-23-2017 06:25 AM

I think in his book American Sniper, Chris Kyle claimed a shot from a mile. If memory serves me, he talked about how difficult the shot was and until it was confirmed he was unsure if he hit the target.

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - The Sicatoka - 06-23-2017 06:30 AM

Better question:

Given the distance which corresponds to travel time for the round, how did the target not move in the ten seconds the round went from chamber to impact? Sitting in a chair at a desk? Sleeping?

RE: World's Longest Sniper Shot - Fo Shizzle - 06-23-2017 06:54 AM

I discussed this with a friend last night that is extremely familiar with long range shooting. He says he has an app on his phone that will calculate windage and curvature of the earth for super long range shots. He has personally shot game over one mile and has witnessed an ex Army Ranger do it right at 2 miles. The technology has ramped up for civilians to pull off shots over 1000 yards with moderate practice.
