Diamond Hawks should have the starting arms next year - billthebighawksfan - 06-03-2017 10:08 AM

I was just thinking about this year's team and how we didn't get the job done like normal. There's a lot of ways to win and UNCW has traditionally won with good defense, good offense and pretty decent pitching. Next year might just be good on the mound. Here's the starters possibly and correct me if I'm wrong here:

Royalty-ace. Locates well and looks to have 3 pitiches. Good run on ball.
Sharpe-Solid southpaw with good control. Pitches will good pace, good off speed stuff.
Beehler-good control/locates well.
Gorham-tranfers from App State. Led App as a freshman with a 3/1 K/BB.

That's a good starting point right there. If they can all continue to improve, that will give the Hawks a good shot in most games. There are other guys than can go out and win a game with like Gantz who is a real gamer.

Questions:

Will Magestro get back to being Magestro?
Will Cota become a dominant, consistent closer like he should be?
Will Joyner make that next step-stuff appears there?
Who else will emerge out of the pen that's a southpaw?
What happened to the big kid that was a UNC recruit-did he redshirt?

Hopefully the Hawks will be playing ball this time next year!

It was such an odd year. We have a solid program, and making the conference final through this rocky season proves that. However, there were big expectations this year that just didn't come to fruition, proved by our preseason ranking that pretty much disappeared in about a week.

I trust the staff to take a good look at things now that the season is over and get things back to normal. Thankfully, we sit in good company with other quality baseball programs around the country where conference championships and post season are not only normal, but expected. That's a good spot to be, even if we have the occasional year like this one where we get a little off track.

Nick Bruno hurt his arm in fall ball. I believe had Tommy John & redshirted. Was there in the dugout all year. By all accounts has weekend stuff.

Starting pitching should be a strength next year. Then again, we thought we had pitching depth this year...

Thanks SuperFan! I was wondering whatever happened to him. He should be about ready to roll come Spring next year in some capacity. Does anyone know if Roberson will be good to go? He has a great FB, but his arm must have been hurting.

The Wilmington Sharks have several UNCW guys of interest playing Summer Ball. Berne, Luke Gesell, Kep Brown (a projected 1st round pick out of HS before injuries, and who played ball at Miami and Spartanburg Methodist), and impressive sophomore righty Breydan Gorham are all on the roster this year.

I'll do my best to track the progress all of our guys playing summer ball around the country again this year.

Indeed! I wouldn't be surprised to see Roberson get picked up in the draft.

Given that he was in the top 200 of Baseball America's draft prospects (# 192), it would be surprising to see him fall outside of the first 10 rounds. And if that happens, I imagine he's gone for sure.

Should be interesting.

I didn't think it deserved it's own thread, but interested about a rumor of one of our coaches Williams, leaving for a lateral move at CoC. Seems very odd to me to go to at the very best a similar program.

Was Williams using this as leverage for more money? or was he trying to get back to SC? Sounds Like Charleston s baseball is going through some upheaveal probably made a good choice to stay out of their drama
