Championship Sunday-- Rice vs. USM To Keep The Streak Alive - waltgreenberg - 05-27-2017 10:52 PM

Well, we may be more rested, but Southern Miss has the large home crowd behind it and is still in the running for the final national seed. Rematch of last year's championship game in which we had the potential game-tying run barely tagged out to end the game and end of conference championship streak. Time for revenge and to keep our post-season streak alive with the automatic bid and conference championship.

It won't be easy. USM has a plethora of pitching-- even factoring in that they've played 3 more games than us in Biloxi, they're an oustanding defensive squad (.975 fielding percentage, 12 outfield assists) and they are a terror on offense in almost all phases. Hitting .315/.420/.505 as a team...averaging a whopping 8.4 runs per game...amongst the national leaders in HRs with 84 (including 4 different guys with 10+ HRs)...and they are a very aggressive and efficient baserunning team (76-97 SBs, with 3 different guys with 10+ stolen bases). They are also extremely patient and disciplined at the plate-- they strikeout a ton, but they also are amongst the national leaders in free passes (averaging 6.8 BBs/HBPs per game). They crowd the plate. Here are just some of their leaders:

Dylan Burdeaux: .360.431/.565, 11 HRs, 24 doubles, 67 RBIs, 22-24 SBs
Matt Wallner: 343/.45/.670, 18 HRs, 16 doubles/triples, 61 RBIs
Taylor Braley: .324/.470/.610, 16 HRs, 10 doubles, 60 RBIs, 57 BBs, 6-6 SBs

Here's the USM stats to date...
http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2016-2017/teamcume.html

Overall, USM are now 48 - 13 (28-7 home, 29-6 CUSA, 10-3 vs. Top 50, 26-11 vs. Top 100), #10 RPI, #8 ISR, #66 SoS. Here's their schedule and results to date...

http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2017/schedule/Southern-Miss

Our pitchers, whomever they may be, simply MUST throw strikes and early in the count. We fall behind in the count, and they'll either kill us with walks or, even worse, turn loose on 2-0, 3-1 balls in the zone.

We need our offense to keep us in the game, and not let their second-tier pitchers give their best Sandy Koufax immitations. My guess is that we start with Canterino, hoping he can get give us 3 quality innings and give us an early lead, and then go with Kravetz, Jefferies, Moss until we can get he ball-- and hopefully, the lead-- to Otto with 3 or less inning to go. IMO, Myers is simply too valuable defensively at 3B and offensively to use him on the mound...at least not unless it's the last resort.

So proud of the guys so far for the survival mentality the past month, and their determination. Let's find a way to win one more, close the season on an 18-4 run, start a new conference championship streak and keep our post-season streak alive. Go Owls!

The guy who they'll probably start, Colt Smith, actually has pretty good stats. He pitched bad against UTSA though. Their best reliever, Sandlin, won't be available.

All of their other relievers aren't particularly intimidating, though.

Definitely nervous about their hitters vs. our pitching. They crushed us at Reckling. Here's to Rice playing like they did in the Saturday game of the USM series.

Owls vs. Eagles for the tournament championship. As it is supposed to be. Sure hope my Eagles can win one more game, but I will not be upset about Rice getting the automatic position in the NCAA's. I know no USM fans expected any other two teams to play for the title again. May the best team tomorrow win.

I'm not sure they go with Smith as he did throw a lot of pitches on Wednesday, and they may not want to risk their rotation for the regionals. Smith looks like a soft-tossing RHP with good control. I wouldn't be surprised if Wallner pitches some. He has very good stats over the 8 outings and 16.1 IP he thrown this year, and has yet to pitch in Biloxi.

In that game, Esquivel got the win and Amador the save.

Like most power-hitting teams, it's the soft-tossers who give them the most trouble. I still expect Canterino to get the start, but wouldn't be surprised if Kravetz is called upon for 3 - 5 innings IF he can continue to throw strikes.

Wallner has a sore hip. Doesn't affect his swing but he can't really pitch. Only 1 appearance in the past 2 months or so.

He was warming up earlier today, so he could go tomorrow. But it's certainly not guaranteed.

He's kinda similar to Otto. Big dude that can bring it up in the mid 90s then can freeze you with a slider.

Will this be on TV?

RE: Championship Sunday-- Rice vs. USM To Keep The Streak Alive - seniorowl - 05-28-2017 12:17 AM

We are doing our part to give our Owls some luck. We are drinking a Rice IPA at the 49th State Brewery here in Anchorage.

Will be in a sports bar to watch this game as that channel is on DirectTV. I get ESPN3 at home but not CBSSN.

Single game, according to the bracket.

BTW, it goes without saying that no lead is safe against Southern Miss. I do hope our offense recognizes this and refuses to take the foot off the pedal.

A little bit of rain already this morning in Biloxi and more on the way. Although I think it should be over by game time?

Was thinking 54th St Grill in Irving. BWW in same area as fallback.
