How many stars gets you excited. - rosewater - 05-27-2017 09:17 AM

With Flubs, recruiting got so bad that anyone with more than an 81 composite on 247 was a reason to celebrate. Now, since Fickel is recruiting at a much better clip, I do not find myself overly impressed with less than an 84. I am sure that you Houston folk know what I am talking about with all of Hermans success. Please spare me the condescending "I do not look at stars, I look at offers blah blah blah." Thoughts please

.84 on 247 seems about right. Not that we get a lot of those but that seems to be the threshold for recruits that are extremely competitively recruited by some of the best programs so a win at that point or above is always a positive. Recruiting is so hit or miss that its hard to get excited for guys with just potential.

i don't care about composite too much...

my thing is that atleast 1 recruiting site lists them as a 4star...to me that means someone sees elite potential.
id be more hyped for a 85 composite (with 1 site giving them a 4star), than i would for a 87 with a consensus 3 star....

beyond stars other things that get me hyped are:
1) 40 times, you could be unranked if you run a 4.3 i get excited..we actually had the fastest recruit in the nation (was only a 3star) but i was so hyped for him, then herman left and he flipped to utah

2) records and gaudy stats: most people familiar with houston know there were tons of debates on greg ward playing qb by our fans til his junior year...more than half our fanbase didnt want him at qb at all at first (okorn was still hyped)..i had heavy debates about him about that. he had almost 6000yds 50tds his senior season alone in one of the hardest divisions in texas, i didnt care that he was 5'10 155 (At the time), he had 9 tds his last game alone

3) great high school film..john okorn had amazing hs film, he played for st thomas aquinas arguably the biggest high school powerhouse and they had numerous games on espn, and their was a tape of him on youtube of him basically single handedly pulling a major comeback upset against a different powerhouse by himself..despite only being a 3star, most uh fans crowned him starter before taking a foot on campus and were hyped about him

I don't get excited until they play for us. We've lost too many players before they even got on campus and have had a ton of hidden gem type players that stars and all that are worthless when talking HS players. Now JC and transfers are a different beast.

Starting to expect at least 3-4 4* from Norvell every year. It's pretty crazy to see Memphis listed along with elite football programs and actually winning some of these battles.

I guess Memphis fans are up there with Houston and Cincy fans on caliber of players at the moment.

RE: How many stars gets you excited. - KNIGHTTIME - 05-27-2017 01:05 PM

UCF is generally in the top 1-3 in recruiting. It takes a 4 star to get me excited or a 3 star with a ton of offers. Really the offer list shows what recruit is the best (general terms).

RE: How many stars gets you excited. - rosewater - 05-27-2017 03:49 PM

For transfers, I think heavily recruited 4 stars or 5 stars are the only ones that get my attention. The 5 stars that we have had over the last few years have had mixed success. Gunnar was ok, and Luc was above average. We had a qb transfer from Notre Dame that was a 5 star that did not work out. We also had a wide receiver from USC that was injured in the first game. The transfers are far from a sure thing.

The Florida twins also recruit very well. It seems they get several 4 stars every cycle.

I get more excited about offers rather than stars. On the flip side, many of our better players had zero other offers, or FCS and low FBS offers, so I don't really worry about it too much.

We had a 5 star , Kevin Harvey, transfer from Penn State to us a few years ago. Quit FB to become a musician. We have had several 2 and 3 stars in the NFL. There has to be a heart and desire rating, otherwise these ratings are nothing more than rating a new model car before it is in the show room as opposed to rating it four years after it leaves the lot to see how many times it has been scheduled for the mechanic's wrench.

We've (Houston) gotten 2*'s who have performed near 4 level *'s so for me player ratings doesn't get me excited as before... But than again Oliver comes to mind 03-banghead

RE: How many stars gets you excited. - robertfoshizzle - 05-29-2017 05:51 PM

I like to see guys with offers from major programs. Our two 4-star guys who have committed in the 2018 class so far have big-time offers -- Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, and Wisconsin among others.

Even more important for us right now is getting in-state guys, especially from the Cincinnati and Dayton areas. 6 of our 7 2018 commits are from Ohio. So even though some of those guys are 3-star prospects with limited P5 offers, they are still top players in our area who will help draw more decorated local recruits.

RE: How many stars gets you excited. - Hurricane Drummer - 05-29-2017 06:10 PM

It takes approximatly 4-7 Hollywood A-listers to get me excited. If I seen any less movie stars at one time I just assume they're look-a-likes.

Those 90 composites are making me jaded about the 80s composites.

Might be on the verge of landing a 4* QB out of California.

We've had 2 star players go in the first round of the NFL draft and 4 star players transfer because of lack of playing time. In the 3-4 star range I can't say I've noticed any trend where one is more likely to succeed than the other. Unless we get a 5* I'm more interested in the story than what a recruiting service thinks.

RE: How many stars gets you excited. - isidnirb - 05-30-2017 11:54 AM

This star ranking has too many misses to mean much at all.

Here are some examples:
http://247sports.com/player/tyler-matakevich-17496
http://247sports.com/player/zay-jones-22712
http://247sports.com/Player/Haason-Reddick-46036538?PlayerInstitution=186330

too many to list...the high school numbers never assess work ethic, drive, and potential. What most players who succeed have.
