I never liked him. He seemed more concerned with James Comey than doing his job properly.

No doubt waiting on the talking points to buzz across the faxes. Just watch, they'll all be in lock step about disarray, the chaos, the halting of the "investigation" or whatever else they can dream up.
For me? I think it was probably time for him to go. He got too into too much and it was all about as clear as mud coming from him.
He didn't appear (to me) to be "playing it down the middle". More like he would paint one side of the fence one day, screw that up somehow, then jump over real quick and paint the other side too. Screwing that up as well.
