CA Column 2018 Recruiting 7-4 Center? - Hoots - 05-05-2017 05:49 AM

Some interesting perspectives on some names which might be new to some of us. 7'4" center? Goodness, that'd be a nice get.

Nice column. Thanks for posting.

There are multiple threads on this guy. FYI, he's not very good.

ESPN ranks him as a Top 15 Center in the country

There's no doubt you take this player

ESPN assigns him a four * and he appears to have upside. He would be a good pick up, IMO.

RE: CA Column 2018 Recruiting 7-4 Center? - DDrum1961 - 05-05-2017 08:10 AM

My concern is a 7' 4" guy who wants to primarily play on the perimeter, and not in the paint ... It's great that he has range, but if your team needs rebounding and your not going to shoot 100% from 3 pt, then are you really helping out your team? Opponents aren't going to send out their 5's to guard the perimeter, they're going to zone and let their guards swat it once he brings the ball down below his chest (and he will if he's trying to shoot from 25 ft) ...

Some really big guys have to develop. Understand that Marc Gasol was s fat lumbering big guy in high school who couldn't / didnt earn an offer from Memphis at the time -

And I have no problem with a 7'4" player who can consistently hit a 3. But that's just me -

Link?
Where are the multiple threads on this guy? And when was a 4* recruit not considered good?

He'd didn't say he wanted to play "primarily" on the perimeter at all. He said he wanted the flexibility to play both inside and out. Huge difference.

I understand his wanting that flexability, but I'm not sure how physical he really wants to play ... I watched him play last year in an Invitational type tournament at Bartlett when his high school team came .... He played outside of the paint at least 75% of his teams offensive possessions ... and he was going up against post players that were only 6'5" ... Don't get me wrong ... 7'4" is 7'4", and you can't teach that ... Would love to get him, but I would expect him to be a project at a high D1 level ...

If he can learn the mechanics and have good form shooting 3 pointers, he can certainly learn the mechanics and develop moves inside of 6', which is where he should spend every single second he is on the court. If he is willing to do the dirty work, at 7'4 he should be able to get a pile of rebounds.

He isn't slower than Tako Fall and he shoots much better. Again, IF he wants to be a player, Tubby should be able to turn him into one.

He's a project. It's going to take years to fill out that frame, but if he has the work ethic. He could be really good.

But you can't scout work ethic.

Right - this is exactly the type of player who would benefit most by playing and learning under Tubby for four years - and it sounds as if he understands that.

Agreed - and you just don't turn down a 7'4 player, project or not! From watching his tape, he has a lot of the pieces to become a good player. I hope we get him!

Can this Dude bust a 3 ft. J

You'd be an absolute idiot to not take a guy at 7'4

Lol...good question. You'd think with a 7'4" dude we'd see nothing but dunk highlights. Instead, it was long range perimeter J's. Somewhere in between will tell the tale.

Is this the kid who committed to East Carolina over us?

Ummmm, no...that was the Usman kid that we evacuated and didn't offer...therefore he didn't pick them over us since he wasn't offered
