Lopes been there, done that, got the tee shirt & the 40 point schellacking that comes with it! Haha. Great experience for the players, but good luck with that UVU.

Who thought this was a good idea? After UVU plays at Kentucky on Nov 10th, they will now play at Duke the next night....

I get testing yourself but these two back to back is asking for confidence to get destroyed.

I agree. I think perhaps one of those teams on a schedule is good, and then a middle of the pack to the bottom P5 school, and then other mid major conference schools, preferably MWC schools for the WACs western teams and maybe some Slummit and Missouri Valley Conference schools for UMKC and Chicago State.

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - Clarity - 06-08-2017 01:47 PM

Hard to get those middle of the pack or lower P5 games. They are lose lose for them. Win and you were expected and lose and you're embarrassed. CSUB has been getting the top teams but not the middle/lower. Would be nice to pick up some of those wins over someone like Cal again but I don't think they'd schedule us anytime soon.

Monson at LBSU is renowned/notorious for body bag games. IIRC, a few years ago there was something that came to light where his contract said he got a bonus for "such games?" Gaucho, please help me out with the details here. I cant quite recall it all.

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - Clarity - 06-08-2017 05:31 PM

Yeah look at who they played last year. Wichita State, North Carolina, Louisville, UCLA, Kansas. As well as some other mid/low P5s. Absolutely insane, has to be the toughest non-conference schedule last year. They must be making a killing on those games.

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - SeattleVandals - 06-08-2017 07:02 PM

Seattle U will play at Washington this year....but in the 2K Classic. So the rivarly will continue for a year while both have new coaches, but since its part of a tournament who knows otherwise

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - Clarity - 06-08-2017 07:09 PM

Do you think Gonzaga will ever give Seattle a game?

No idea. Dollar said Seattle U was trying every year to get Gonzaga and WSU to play them, but always were rejected. WSU I understand but dont know why the Zags are against it. But as long as we keep playing UW and EWU every year, the Cougs and Zags can shove it for all I care

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - RoosHouse - 06-09-2017 01:35 AM

Do we have any reason to believe that Utah Valley, UMKC, and Chicago st will not have significantly harder schedules than New Mexico St and Grand Canyon like it is year after year? It sucks bc two top rated teams hurt the conference rpi by playing soft schedules when they could get quality wins. But I do see the confidence side to the argument.

UVU is playing Kentucky and Duke back to back nights this year. UMKC is playing North Carolina State and Wichita State. I know NMSU is playing Illinois and is also in the Diamondhead Classic, a good field. Not sure on GCU. CSUB is playing UCLA, Arizona and Fresno State again I think. RPI should be up a bit this year, doesn't really matter though it's a irrelevant rating. The committee obviously doesn't care about it since they left out Illinois State last year. The WAC is a bit off from a two bid league although the quality is obviously there. Just need to schedule and win more solid but not impossible P5 non-conference games. Problem is those teams don't want to play, it's a lose-lose for them.

I know, right? GCU has some nerve scheduling cupcakes like Duke, Penn St, Louisville. Arizona, and SDSU last season. And the Lopes didn't even have the decency to go 0-8 against Top 100 RPI teams, like UMKC. GCU decided to show-boat & go win a couple of those games. We won't even talk about the nerve NMSU had to go undefeated (3-3) against Top 100 opponents. Show-offs.

And nevermind that NMSU was a Top 100 team both times they played UMKC, thereby actually improving the Roos' SOS. Meanwhile, for the exact same games, Aggies took the SOS hit for playing a sub-200 team twice.

Low SOS isn't an indictment of the teams that are winning the games on their schedule. Top conference teams just don't get the same SOS bump everyone else does from playing them twice a year. Look at the conference SOS for any league in CBB: Top teams have lowest SOS. Bottom teams have the highest.

Apparently, CSUB returns to U. Arizona next year.

It appears NMSU has played tougher schedules in the past so maybe I misspoke on them.

Don't have to play top 100 teams but avoid 300+ ranked teams in non conference.
I know being on the west coast makes this hard as there aren't as many teams to choose from.

You do realize that better OOC record a team has, the more likely the they are to have a weak OOC SOS. SOS is a bad stat. Look at the RPI of a team cause the committee isn't going to be looking at bs like SOS. They care about top 50 wins and top 100 wins.

The committee doesn't care about RPI either. They left out a top 30 team in Illinois State last year.

I was talking about the RPI of the teams that GCU and NMSU defeated. The committee does care about your record vs. top 50 and top 100 teams. That's why Syracuse got left out.
