2017 non-conference opponents - SeattleVandals - 05-03-2017 09:22 PM

Missed this from early March, but Seattle U will play in the 2k Legends Classic, playing at Providence and presumably Washington (but chance it could be St. Louis or Virginia Tech). Then they play in the 4-team mid major bracket, hosted by Belmont along with Houston Baptist and Detroit-Mercy.

Providence, Washington, Virginia Tech, and St Louis then play at Madison Square Garden. So it's set up just like the Legends Classic, which SU played in last year.

Interesting the rivarly game with UW is played in something like this (assuming both play). SU did the same thing with Eastern Washington last year for the teams first game of the yearly H/H, happening to meet in the Legends Classic championship in Cheney.

No word on other games for SU I can find yet. With Hayford coming for EWU, wonder if the rivarly will continue with a H/H each season.

That is very cool, a really big early season tournament. Also I believe all the games are on an ESPN network which is awesome. I have known this for a while but for those who don't CSUB is playing in the Great Alaska Shootout which is very cool although the tournament has definitely seen better days. There was a time when it was a premier early season tournament. On the positive though it looks very winnable. The other teams are the host Alaska Anchorage, Cal Poly, Central Michigan, College of Charleston, Idaho, Sam Houston State and Santa Clara. By the way anybody know around what time the rest of the non-conference games will be announced? I hope CSUB schedules really good teams again like last year with Arizona and SMU. Two close games until the end.

UTRGV was supposed to play Oklahoma this Fall in the new Burt Ogden Arena. Last time I drove by (2-3 days ago) they had up some concrete pillars on three sides and a few of the concrete diagonals. No walls, no roof, no fourth side. Hard to see it being finished in time.

Either the game's off or it will happen in the old fieldhouse.

Maybe this is just me being crazy, but does anyone else feel like schedules are being released late this year?

Yeah see that's kinda what I was thinking. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention that closely.

Of what has been reported/rumored, GCU has some respectable OOC opponents lined up for 2017-18.

Host St. Mary's @ GCU Arena
"Neutral" site v. St. John's @ Suns Arena (part of a doubleheader w/Arizona v. Texas A&M)
Final game of 2-for-1 series @ Louisville
Rumored start of series w/Illinois (assume GCU goes there first; not sure if it's a H/H or 2-for-1)

Guessing GCU will give up a non-D1 game to do a "secret scrimmage", like they did in 2016-17 v. OR ST. I expect we will also see some of the usual suspects from SWAC & MEAC come through. Personally, I'd like to see another game or 2 with BW teams & really want a regular season contest w/NAU.

Maybe Marv is ready to start handing out games to old WAC foes willing to play in Vegas. If so, I don't see if/how GCU wouldn't be into that. Probably too risky for MM at this point, though. Probably needs at least a year or two, so he is certain it'd be a win for his squad.

Not really. I feel like GCU's schedule doesn't usually drop until July.

EDIT: Looks like 2016-17 schedule dropped on 6/27/16. For 2015-16, home portion of schedule came out on 7/8/15. The full schedule was released on 8/11/15. 2014-15 full release came on July 1.

Impressive lineup. I would kill to see some P5 teams come to the blue court.

I had heard about the GAS, but a year (or two?) ago and had forgotten. Thx for the reminder.
Seems to me Barnes nearly always is later than most others in the WAC at getting that schedule out. May not be a bad thing if its tweaked with better opponent choices.

Currently mobile....away from the house or on "the throne."

Yeah, I think Majerle spilled the beans to AZ Sports guys in early January last year. I saw the date for the first time probably in March from one of the College hoops guys that breaks hoops news (Goodman/Rothstein/etc). It was all public knowledge before full schedule was released. Kind of like how we already know the doubleheader w/UA is on Dec 5, 2017. (Yes, I have already requested the day off).

I agree with the assertion that the GAS shootout used to be one of the premier early season tourneys. Take a look at the list of winners. For years it was a who's who of college basketball royalty. Take a close look a the 1992 winner. 04-jawdrop

In any case, I would love to play in the GAS in any year.

And versus the Great Lou Henson, no less. I hadn't gone to NMSU yet, so that fact was unknown to me till I looked it up today.

No P5 tram would be caught dead in that ugly blue court.

Anyway something I found digging, UCLA will host CSUB on November 29th. Awesome scheduling can't wait for the game.

Glad to see other WAC teams beefing up their schedules! Hope to see NMSU follow that route. I know NMSU will be playing Illinos next season and perhaps Kentucky. I wonder if NMSU could get ASU to play in the Pan Am next season? Since we tied up the series with them with a win in Tempe. I know Arizona came once and we gave them a big scare. Not easy to win in the Pan Am when in full affect.

RE: 2017 non-conference opponents - Clarity - 05-04-2017 02:44 PM

Illinois is going to be a lot better next year and probably make the tournament. Kentucky would be a massive game. GCU, NMSU and CSUB all seem to schedule tough non conference games, except last year NMSU had a notably easier schedule.

Agreed. I wasn't fooled by Paul Weirs sales tactics that he used here at New Mexico State. I personally was disappointed with the soft scheduling. I am not easily fooled. However, I did enjoy beating a PAC 12 team. Hopefully Jans takes the WSU route and schedule tough opponents and beats them. Seems to have worked for them.
