Basketball home & homes ... - HometownTiger - 04-26-2017 06:13 PM

Discussing with Vandy, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

I'm all for it, given where the program is today.

Arkansas and Tennessee are great for the program in my opinion. I have never understood why ANYONE would not want those games.

RE: Basketball home & homes ... - Tiger87 - 04-26-2017 08:00 PM

I like Vandy the best out of those. Whenever we can get into the Nashville market, it's a plus. Ask Norvell. And we typically don't go head-to-head recruiting against them - at least not to the level of Arky and UTK. Plus, they've been the better RPI boost lately.

But agree...given where we are today, I get the need to look at all 3 along with Old Miss and Miss State.

Arkansas and Tennessee should be every year. That's your biggest home game every year unless you can get a blue blood on the schedule, which is unlikely.

We have a lot of fans in Nashville so playing Vandy would be great, would love to get a football series with them too

Ask Coca Cola if they want to give Pepsi free access to Atlanta or Fed Ex if they want to give free access to Memphis to UPS.

You do NOT give more exposure in your town to teams you are fighting against for talent.

These teams are already kicking our ass in recruiting so why do we help them.

Their fans chose to follow schools out of town. Not our business to provide home game for them.

I wouldn't compare Memphis athletics to Coca-Cola or FedEx. In this comparison those two companies would be more suited compared to a power 5 program. Memphis should be more compared to your local mail stop who is begging UPS and FedEx to use them as drop off locations or the storebrand Dr. thunder.

Therefore you would be more than happy as Dr. thunder to sit on the same shelf with Coca-Cola or as the Mailstop to have FedEx and UPS grace you with their presence. Just saying. Get over whatever pride is keeping you from accepting it, Memphis needs some SEC schools on their basketball schedule.

The only thing I would wait on is playing Tennessee while we are down. They have been very strategic through the decades in playing us in basketball and football only when we are down, with the one exception being Bruce Pearl who was not afraid to play us regardless.

I'd still like to get some football agreements in place to coincide with the basketball agreements. Unfortunately, it looks like the SEC is pushing it's schools away from high mid-major football games. They prefer either P5 or cupcake non-conference games.

Don't 2 of those 3 still owe us a football game?

Arkansas does for sure. They backed out after we beat them 2 out of the last 3 football games we played.

Are you kidding? Kneeling at the feet of Vandy, Arkansas and Tennessee in basketball? IF this is what you think of Memphis basketball, why in the world were you ever critical of anything under Pastner? Your self esteem and standards are embarrassingly low.

I've been dead set against this for a while now but the excitement it would bring is a much needed boost .07-coffee3

Georgia Tech would be a good option.

RE: Basketball home & homes ... - tigerlands - 04-27-2017 07:31 AM

Vandy and ut...ok sure, that's fine. Arkansas...meh.

RE: Basketball home & homes ... - aTxTIGER - 04-27-2017 07:38 AM

We shouldnt play Arkansas in anything until they give us the money or the football game they owe us.

I would want home & home games with teams from whichever P5 conference gives us the best shot at getting in .... SEC, no way ... I used to think (and probably still do) that the Big12 gives us that ...

or long shot would be does the AAC have a chance to elevate to a P6 status ... From a money standpoint, the ACC was a success for Syracuse, Pitt, and BC; but I don't think from an Athletics standpoint maybe not so much .... Would the want to move back to the AAC and try to help elevate our conferences status ?

They're only the biggest games when we're down like we are now, and you're selling tix to a bunch of SEC lackies. When we're competing in conference, Cincy, UConn, Wichita State will be much bigger for Tiger fans - and just as big a crowd.

Been there, done that, what's it gotten us? Kneeling at the rail of the almighty $EC and kissing their @ss in an effort to build our programs, yea, that's really worked out. They want to play us when we're down, but let us show just a glimmer of being competitive and they either say no, or back out of contracts. Even though our basketball program is currently down, in my opinion, we should never have to kiss an $ec teams @ss to play us in that particular sport, never. Anyone notice, now that we're finally good in football, how many $ec teams are knocking down our door to play us, none, zilch, zero. Broken contracts are part of their DNA. Beat em, or be competitive with them, their favorite by (buy) word is, see ya. This is just my opinion, agree with me, fine, if not fine also. GO TIGERS!

That is a terrible analogy. Nascar's analogy was bad - but your's is terrible. SEC opponents are good now, because we need to sell tickets. When things get rebuilt though, we've proven over decades that we can sell tix with or without them. Heck, we have better home attendance than 2 of those 3 programs on a regular basis.

RE: Basketball home & homes ... - UofMemphis - 04-27-2017 09:19 AM

I would love to see us reward the SEC teams that play us home-home in football with a home-home hoops series...therefore I have no issues adding Miss State and Mizzou to the hoops schedule.
