Annual Football Series that Should Happen - Carolina_Low_Country - 04-17-2017 01:51 PM

Here are a few series that I think should happen every year in college football that currently do not happen (this is just for fun so do not worry about conference games and number of games, etc). If there are any more games that you think should happen every year post them

2) NC State vs. East Carolina (Thanksgiving Home/Home)
3) Marshall vs. West Virginia (Home/Home)
4) Pitt vs. West Virginia
5) Texas vs. Texas A&M (Thanksgiving)
6) Arkansas State vs. Arkansas (Labor Day Weekend in Little Rock)
7) Cincinnati vs. Louisville
8) Memphis vs. Ole Miss
9) Florida vs. Miami
10) Maryland vs. Navy
11) Temple vs. Penn State
12) Temple vs. Rutgers
13) Boston College vs. UConn
14) Miami (OH) vs. Cincinnati
15) Notre Dame vs. Michigan

17) UTEP vs. New Mexico
18) UTEP vs. NM State
19) NM State vs. New Mexico (Thanksgiving)
20) BYU vs. Utah State
21) Utah State vs. Utah
22) Utah vs. BYU (Thanksgiving)
23) Houston vs. Rice (Thanksgiving)
24) Eastern Washington @ Washington St. (Labor Day Weekend)

26) Southern Miss vs. Ole Miss
27) Southern Miss vs. Mississippi State
28) WKU vs. Kentucky

If Texas and A&M start back up TCU & SMU should move the Battle of the Iron Skillet to Thanksgiving.

#2 would be nice but I think it will be lucky if the current every 3 years is renewed. I have a sad feeling this game will slowly be fading away. Also, it appears the ACC is trying to make NCSU vs UNC a Thanksgiving Weekend game since this will be the 3rd straight year the game has been played on that weekend.

I would not say Pitt/WVU and UConn/BC are annual games though. WVU and Pitt did sign a four game series but that is not an annual game contract, a ten game series may have been more of a confirmation of it going long term. Same for UConn/BC. The point of this was not games that occur here and there but ones that should happen every year annually

Like #13 these have started up again where it's a round robin where UConn plays Boston College and the following year UMass. Some years you will see both as our 2018 schedule. http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-18/2018-umass-minutemen-football-schedule.php

I agree, however we both know UNC vs. Duke is the the Thanksgiving game, and NC State and ECU should play on Thanksgiving as well. It would be the best for the entire state of North Carolina and really create more college football noise in our state late in the season which we seem to lose as the season goes along and as basketball season approaches.

BYU-Utah St. series actually was over Thanksgiving weekend the past two seasons.

BYU-Utah doesn't happen over Thanksgiving anymore because of the PAC 12 schedule...which amazingly allows BYU to play California, USC, and Stanford over Thanksgiving in like 5 out of 10 years.

Looks like you're most interested in non-P5 teams who really want to play local P5 teams. Out of the 32 matchups you chose, only 5 would be P5 vs. P5, and you omitted obvious old rivalry games including Oklahoma-Nebraska and Pitt-Penn State.

For non-conference games that "should" be played often, the test should be: Which non-conference games would neutral CFB fans, with no rooting interest for or against either team, want to see most? Even with that short list of games, it would be nice to see them, but teams *should* schedule who they want, rather than having anyone force teams to play each other.

There is nothing I love better than watching a MAC school beat a Big Ten school.

That said, Eastern Michigan and Michigan need not be an annual series.

We played them 40 times over a 42 year period. The thing is when you are 29-11-0 all-time versus a school it kind of makes for a boring "rivalry" not to mention they bring nobody and our games there are their largest crowds of the year.

There is just no atmosphere.

If we are going to create something that does have some fire to it I would say Texas Tech Vs. UH

In all honesty we both have an inferiority complex about one thing or another and are closer on so many levels that this would create a healthy rivalry game.

Rice Zzzzzzzz
SMU Zzzzzzzz

Etc.

RE: Annual Football Series that Should Happen - JRsec - 04-17-2017 03:45 PM

The Following Should be Annual Games:

Arkansas vs Texas (too much interest to stop)

Texas vs Texas A&M (Any game where a mascot is stolen and barbecued has to be saved)

Arkansas vs Oklahoma (too natural of a rivalry to pass up)

Michigan vs Notre Dame (It just should be.)

Auburn vs Tennessee (Was an annual until '92)

Auburn vs Florida (Was an annual until '92)

Auburn vs Georgia Tech (Was the South's oldest rivalry unitl 1978)

Penn State vs Pittsburgh (Should never have ended)

Pittsburgh vs West Virginia (Such a fine clash of cultures located so closely to one another)

Virginia Tech vs West Virginia (Those who wish they could burn couches versus those who actually do.)

Florida vs Miami (Because no P school should get to dodge another in state P school.)

Alabama vs Georgia (because I love seeing either one lose)

California vs Brigham Young (PC versus Fundamentalism a must see where Palpatine can feel the hate flowing through them both.)

Missouri vs Kansas (What else do they have?)

Florida State vs Penn State (should be called the Scooter Chair Memorial)

Tennessee vs West Virginia (The Bitcruncher Classic and should be catered by Jack Daniels and George Dickel.)

Nebraska vs Oklahoma (Just because some things should never have been screwed with!)

Texas vs North Carolina (For the Nose in the Air Trophy)

Alabama vs Notre Dame (Because the Nation always roots for a tie with serious injuries on both sides.)

Clemson vs Georgia (Because there has never been any love here.)

Miami vs L.S.U. (Because Florida hates playing L.S.U. and the cultures of these two cities would make for the wildest home and home if the LSU game was played in New Orleans and Miami's in the Orange Bowl). Hells bells, I'd go!

Georgia Tech vs Purdue (Because if something is going to get built it will get built well if these two are involved and besides at least engineers would care.)

Ole Miss vs Stanford (Old South meets the Mob. Can you imagine the challenge to manners that would occur if the Stanford Band dropped by for tailgating in the Grove?).

Well that should at least give us a good start and something to look forward to every year!

RE: Annual Football Series that Should Happen - Stugray2 - 04-17-2017 03:46 PM

Five stand out

1 Texas vs Texas A&M
2 Nebraska vs Oklahoma
3 West Virginia vs. Pitt
4 Kansas vs Missouri
5 Pitt vs Penn State

I agree Notre Dame should play a B1G East opponent annually (Michigan, Michigan State mostly, but also Ohio State or Penn State now and again), but it doesn't really matter which, so long as it is one of them.

Don't care much about P5 vs G5 rivalries. Not going to worry about those, they are done. Just a couple stragglers left, and only one, Navy vs Notre Dame, has solid economic value.

RE: Annual Football Series that Should Happen - goofus - 04-17-2017 03:49 PM

Any state, that has only 2 P5 schools total that are in 2different P5 conferences, should play each other every year.

Some already do like
Iowa-Iowa St
South Carolina-Clemson
KY-Louisville
Ga-GT

Some don't like
PSU-Pitt

Well, I think that is it. PSU-Pitt are the only P5 schools in a state with 2 P5 teams that don't play each other every year.

Not Kansas-Missouri. One criterion should be, would the game get better TV ratings than a conference game between two average P5 teams. Pick two teams that were about average last year. Georgia-Kentucky, TCU-Texas Tech, whatever. The other four games you listed pass that test. A Kansas-Missouri football game does not.
