Russell Westbrook breaking Big O's TD record - jarr - 04-10-2017 03:19 PM

Surprised there hasn't been any discussion on Westbrook breaking the Big O's record the other night. Does anyone thing what Westbrook is doing in today's game is as impressive as when Oscar did it? It's kind of amazing that he isn't even the runaway favorite for MVP. The game has shifted big time in favor of guards.

I could argue either way. On the one hand there are a lot fewer possessions now but like you mentioned the game is really perimeter friendly. You look at the amount of triple doubles Harden is putting up and even though he's short of averaging a triple double it shows these number are more attainable than they have been in a long time. Hate to take the easy way out but I'd have to say it's similarly impressive to what Oscar did.

I love watching him play. He's may be the best pure athlete in sports. Incredibly fast and can absolutely jump out of the gym.

And it REALLY starts hitting home when you realize the term "triple-double" wasn't even coined until the mid-80s. They weren't a big deal until a Laker started doing them (Magic)...if they were a big deal, the biggest stat-monger in professional sports history (Wilt) would've gone for a few more.

You also have the 3 point shot and a way more liberal definition of what an assist is now compared to them.

I was unaware either player found the endzone all that often.

From a statistical analysis:

FGA per game
RW - 24
OR - 22.9

FG%
RW - 42.5%
OR - 47.8%

eFG% (this is the true measure since it includes the 3pt shot)
RW - 47.4%
OR - 47.8%

FT per game
RW - 10.5
OR - 11

FT %
RW - 84.3%
OR - 80.3%

Rebounds / Game
RW - 10.7
OR - 12.5

Assists / Game
RW - 10.4
OR - 11.4

Points per game
RW - 31.6
OR - 30.8

Minutes per game
RW - 34.8
OR - 43.8

PER (I could argue this is the best measurement)
RW - 30.8
OR - 26.0

Miscellaneous
Westbrook has the benefit of the three point shot but Oscar played 9 more minutes per game.
The game may be more perimeter oriented now, but defenses are so much better now.

I'd call Westbrooks season as good or better than Oscars.

Agree... an assist is credited far to easy today.

In the time of Oscar I seem to remember an assist was a pass "that DIRECTLY resulted in a basket". Things like on a fast break with another player or a pass to someone cutting to the basket. Now it seems if you pass the ball to a guy 35 feet away and he hits a shoot you get an assist.

In almost all sports quantitative comparisons are poor measures of greatness era to era. Better measures are relative measures such as how much better was Oscar versus his closest peers versus Westbrook versus his.

I think the most dominant example was Babe Ruth hitting 60 homers and the next closest hit something like 15 or 20. That shows greatness.

Then look at the usage rate stats and your head will explode...

I'm not familiar with that stat. I see where Westbrook is at 40% this year. What does that mean? Anyone care to explain that stat to me?
