MVC to hold emergency meeting on Sunday in Saint Louis (Rothstein) - BigEastHomer - 04-04-2017 03:55 PM

The Missouri Valley Conference is expected to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday in Saint Louis with its respective athletic directors and presidents to likely discuss a plan for Wichita State’s expected exit to the American Athletic Conference, multiple sources told FanRag Sports.
FanRag Sports reported earlier on Tuesday that members of the American Athletic Conference were preparing for the Shockers to join the league next season as a basketball only member.

Yes. It personally annoys me because it's an inaccurate term on its face, but that's what people generally mean to be a "basketball-only" school.

It's more like saying "steak only" when someone really means a dinner with an appetizer, a salad, a steak, spinach, mashed potatoes, a glass of wine, and a dessert with a cup of coffee. 07-coffee3

I think that's a Southern thing – I know I have only experienced that in the south. That all soft drinks are Cokes in the same way that all facial tissues are Kleenex.

Where I'm from, people would ask for a "pop" and then specify their soft drink of choice.

As for the "basketball only" thing, I think that's a reflection on the way the general public looks at college athletics – as football and men's basketball and that's it. At some schools, women's basketball matters as well but frankly, that is rare.

I think a much better term would be "non-football playing member."

As for this meeting, I think it is pretty clear where this is headed. Wichita State is definitely leaving. That's no surprise and it's probably a good move for the Wheat Shockers and for the American.

It will be interesting to see who the Missouri Valley replaces them with? One of my best friends from college coaches in that league. I'll send him a text and see what he's hearing?

Ha. Arkansas Tech men's basketball, baseball, softball and women's basketball is much better than Illinois-Chicago teams year end and year out. Tech is one of the tops in basketball in D2. They could be very competitive in the MVC in those 4 sports alone.

Yes, its definitely a southern thing. Years ago, every copier was a "Xerox" machine even though they were manufactured by everyone from GE to IBM. That's the ultimate height of name value when a branding name actually becomes synonymous with the product (even though multiple vendors make essentially the same thing). For instance, most people ask for Fritoes rather than "corn chips".

I was thinking about what schools the Missouri Valley should consider.

My first thought is UIC. My next thought is IUPUI (Indianapolis). My third thought is Valparaiso.

My last thought is to go with all three. Two big urban state schools and one private.

Others- UMKC. UW-Milwaukee. UN-Omaha.

Illinois State should consider asking the MAC to expand.

I like the term "Olympic Sports". seems better suited

I think the NEWbigeast took that term to a new level further up

Or when basketball season is over, the NEWbigeast along with the othe similar small basketball only conferences disappear with them till the following year, basketball only term.

I would like to see a complete divorce between the football schools and the non-football schools in the MVC. Neither sides could satisfy their needs. Look at the defections lately? Plus the talk that Northern Iowa, Missouri State, Illinois State and Indiana State leaving for an FBS conference is a tell tale signs that the mVC is unstable.

There are some very formidable non-basketball programs in the BIG EAST.

You didn't answer my question in a previous thread when you said a "source" says it's UIC. I asked how credible is this source and has the source been correct before? I ask because you haven't wavered.
