Hmmn. Kind of interesting. It doesn't seem like we've had the last one all that long. So I'll take it that we're doing away with the Old English R? That's kind of a direct slap at Wayne Graham if true.

I don't like the large pixel motif at all. It isn't distinctive or identifiable.

JK said at the Spring Owls Club AD talk said the Old English R will still be used. Of course, he said they would do everything they could to keep Mike............

The band aid look, replacing the owl images, is remarkably appropriate for the athletic department. Is the mascot changing to a band-aid, too? Though obviously we can't call the mascot a band-aid - that's trademarked.
And now that I look at it a second time, the name is clearly a piece of tape. Which is also remarkably appropriate. Duct tape and band-aids - Rice athletics in a nutshell.

I'm going to guess that the new owl will be a simpler, less busy graphic that's more usable on uniforms and merchandise. A nice bonus would be the return of the color gray, but I wouldn't bet on that. I predict the OER stays.

Based on what was reported above and the link (which does NOT show the solo OER in the "old" column), it seems the OER is going to stay. It also seems like the current iteration of the owl is going.
Good riddance. I did not like that owl--it looked too "corporate" and dated at the same time. Rice ought to be pushing its collegiate, academic sensibility. In its sports branding, it should go for an august, esteemed look that mainly revolves around the "R" and not have the graphic identity of a minor league baseball team. I actually think the blue shield (with the two chevrons and the three white owls) ought to figure more prominently in the sports logos (think on the shoulders of the FB uniforms, or on banners stuck to HRS).
Harvard does a good job of incorporating their academic shield (and their academic brand) into their athletics marks.

As I recall from the February mid-year Owl Club meeting, Dr. K said we weren't going to ditch the OER in the new logo.
