Marquez Letcher-Ellis may transfer - mrbig - 03-27-2017 07:52 PM

Just reported via twitter by Adam Coleman with chron.com

Says MLE requested a release, though remaining at Rice is an option.

Wow - reasons? Thought that great reaction for Pera would bear more on players' decisions.

I don't think he's the last either. It's 2012 all over again.

RE: Marquez Letcher-Ellis may transfer - mrbig - 03-27-2017 08:47 PM

According to twitter, they love Coach P but want to play in better conferences. So Rice invested what, $50,000 per year per player on these guys, just so they could use the opportunity to self-promote and then bounce!?! I have quickly come around to the opinion of "F-them". I want my alumni donations and money I paid for tuition that went into the endowment that eventually went to these guys back! Find guys who want to be at Rice. Please!

Honest question, coming from somebody who loves Rice: why would any good basketball player want to be at Rice? If they're smart enough and/or talented enough, wouldn't they just rather play at Stanford, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Harvard, Princeton, etc.?

A few reasons:

-Maybe they are from the Houston area and went to high school here (Unlike Quez) and feel a strong connection to the community?
-Maybe they like the warm winters.
-Maybe they like academic experience combined with the residential college experience.
-Maybe they like the coaching staff better.
-Maybe they're from China and want to be around a lot of fellow international students 03-lmfao.

A classic saying is apropos here: don't hate the player, hate the game.

The players are trying to do what's best for them in the system as it is. You can't blame 'em for pursuing self-interest when it doesn't hurt anyone in any major way. You think a player who thinks switching schools will literally change the outlook of his entire career/life should put that on hold for the love of Rice, even if it's strong? Now they may be mistaken of course (e.g. Obi), but that's a different (and more empirical) debate.

Any complaints should be directed at our governance for not ponying up the $$$ and the NCAA for its lax transfer rules.

What evidence do you have that "our governance" did not "pony up the $$$"?

It is discouraging to realize that, other than location (which is positive for some students and negative for others), just about everything that really differentiates Rice from those other schools from an athletic perspective (e.g. conference, level of competition, attendance, media coverage, facilities) is neutral or negative.

I'm speaking more generally, not just $ offered to Rhoades this round.
The evidence for the more general point is ... rather prevalent

Interesting point. I guess the hope is that we get a coach who differentiates us (Rhoades?).. and maybe some kids prefer to build something solid at, e.g. Rice bball, than walk into something that already exists but is middling? (Presumably can't get kids who have option to walk into something existing and great)

Makes me wonder if I shouldn't do what's best for me and my family and save the money and time spent on college athletics.

Then I think about players like Tamir and Andrew and Max, and I remember why I support Rice athletics. I just hope Coach Pera can find more of those.

I also wonder if Rhoades knew this was coming and that contributed to his decision to leave.

RE: Marquez Letcher-Ellis may transfer - ExcitedOwl18 - 03-27-2017 09:20 PM

I find it hilarious that these guys need better competition to play against yet they can't beat Utah Valley at home.

Have fun walking into the Carrier Dome on a cold January night once you've reached the Tobacco Road promise land, Mar(cus or quez)!

How many players from Rice have made enough money in the NBA to warrant transferring? Evans is literally the only one I think has a chance at the NBA. If the other players think they do then they're being fooled by someone.

We aren't losing any of our players to the Ivy's though. Our players want to play in front of the high major type crowds. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of our players had more support in HS than at most Rice games.

Agreed... My high school crowds were bigger (Large northeast Catholic school for context).
