Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - odu09 - 03-23-2017 03:30 PM

Per an Ed Miller tweet: #odu has announced that reserve Gs Randy Haynes & Travis Fields won't return in '17-18. Fields (Norcom) was a backup PG. Haynes backup wing.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - ODU Hugh - 03-23-2017 03:32 PM

Would this possibly indicate awesome signings are on the horizon or nah?

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - odu09 - 03-23-2017 03:36 PM

We already have two shooters in the next recruiting class as well as Green coming off of a redshirt, so I don't think this was a huge surprise. Still sucks to lose some depth

I have been asking for months how we were going work with all the perimeter players that we will have next year. This is one way to deal with it.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - Gilesfan - 03-23-2017 03:41 PM

Probably saw the writing on the wall. I wish both luck in the future; I don't think either had a significant role on the team next year. Opens up a scholarship to where I would like 1 grad transfer and 1 freshman big man......

Guards-
Caver, Heuitt, Green, Godwin, Mauras, Pinckney

Wings-
Talley, Stith

Big Men-
Porter, Stith, Carver (hybrid), Vassor, Kah

Maybe they will wind up at UNCW 05-stirthepot

I think Godwin is a wing.

PG - Caver, Green, Pinckney
SG - Stith ,Hueitt
SF - Talley, Godwin, Green

So, does Pinkney back up Caver?

I would hope it would be Green and Hueitt

Best case scenario for next year.

We get both a freshman big and a transfer big (though a backup PG wouldn't hurt either).
Brandon Stith stays healthy.
Talley doesn't get suspended.
Kah learns proper defense.

If all of those things happen, we could be very good.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - Bwebb009 - 03-23-2017 04:00 PM

It would be awesome to get Thompson and let him start at the 2 next year. Too perfect.

I think Godwin is a wing.

Guard/wing. He can certainly play both.

If Talley gets suspended again, he might be shown the door.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - ODU BBALL - 03-23-2017 06:32 PM

I'm sorry to see these two guys leave the team for whatever the reasons. I'm even more saddened by the fact that this has become an ongoing theme during the Jeff Jones era. The theme is that players that were expected to be members of the team the following season end up either being forced to leave on their own, or they are suspended from the team for various reasons. As someone that has been an avid follower of ODU basketball since at least the early 70's this is troublesome. Of course ODU has had a few instances where a player elected to transfer to another school. There has also been a time or two over the years when someone was dismissed from the team for breaking some rule, or failure to make grades. I don't ever recall the consistent flow of people out after just being with the team for a year or two as we have experienced since this group of coaches has taken over. To me it is not indicative of a healthy basketball program.

This isn't just ODU, it's the new landscape of college basketball.

The Decline of ODU Basketball... established 2012

Which was "forced to leave on their own"? I would venture to guess that both are leaving in search of more playing time.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU - ODU BBALL - 03-23-2017 07:07 PM

As far as the make-up of what we can only assume to be the returning team that will take the floor for ODU later this year, does it bother anyone else that these guys that will likely be counted on to either start or play major minutes are either by size or skill set anything but ideal (even at a mid-major school) for their position -

Talley - Nice size at 6'-7" for his position as a small forward. Decent at putting the ball on the floor with the dribble. Extremely poor with the outside shot (beyond 15 feet). His accuracy from the 3 point line is pretty much non-existent. Most any good college basketball team puts a small forward on the floor that can hurt you from the 3 point line. In Talley's case, ODU doesn't. If he isn't putting up hundreds of 3 point shots every day to improve his accuracy to a respectable level during this off season then shame on him.

Brandon Stith - At 6'-7" he is undersized to be playing the center position. If he was better at putting the ball on the floor to help create his shots against bigger centers down low that would be a tremendous help. Even better than that, if he was adept at shooting the 3 point shot (like a 6'-9" Alex Laughton, or a 6'-7" Valdas Vascilius) to draw his man out with him that would be a big plus to his game. Unfortunately, he doesn't excel at either, and certainly has not shown much range with his shot. He would be ideal at his size playing the power forward position for ODU if he could cover the opponent out away from the basket in Jeff Jone's preferred man-to-man defense. Unfortunately he has not shown the ability to successfully do that. His operating area offensively is restricted to what basically amounts to an 8' arc out from the basket.

My hopes with the center and power forward position going forward to next season is that Porter will assume the role of the starting center position and Brandon will develop both an ability to cover the opposing power forward defensively and more importantly, come into the season with a new and improved consistent jump shot from at least 15'. Whatever happens, I hope that Kah gets significant playing time as he is about the only tall interior player that ODU currently has that has shown a decent/consistent outside shot. Beyond that ... recruit someone that changes the equation.

This. Over 700 players transfer every year now. With about 350 teams, it works out to, basically, two players on every team, every year, now transfer.

That's pretty much what I was referring to. You (ODU) are forcing them to leave of their own accord due to your (ODU) actions, or inaction's. I don't know what the reasons are for either one of them leaving. I just know that this has become a trend at ODU over the past few years. Guys like Haynes and Kah are recruited into the program with just two years of eligibility and while Haynes played some, I would not say that he played a lot. Kah played far too little in my opinion. Did Fields leave in order to find more playing time elsewhere? Did Haynes? Did Fields leave because he was told he was not going to get the scholarship that was promised next season? I don't know.
