Tubby needs to go get his own Semi Ojeleye - HoopDreams - 03-23-2017 12:49 PM

@VerbalCommits Duke F Chase Jeter (SO) is leaving the program.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/3913173/chase-jeter

Semi's two year stats at Duke are very similar to Jeter's.

Jeter will have plenty of suitors. Have to think he'll be one of the more pursued players out there. May want to get back out West...but he's definitely someone Tubby should pursue.

We just need left handers that can go right and right handers that can go left. We get those and we are final four bound.

While I understand this post, I do think the argument has merit based on general skill level - the Elite 8 showed a high level of basketball IQ - not just as a team, but individual.

Guys with hesitation dribbles and pump fakes, shot fakes, pass fakes and Xavier even had guards that posted up and had up and under moves.

What I really wonder is how many of these players had most of these skills before they got to their respective schools versus how many were developed by coaches at those schools?

When you watch Memphis play, they are woefully underskilled. I think there is raw talent overall on the roster, but as far as skill level, they seem behind.

Yet folks on the recruiting forum consistently rave about getting "athletic" guys, which is really a code word for "no real basketball skills but can jump really high and run kinda fast."

We salivate too many times over the Will Coleman's of the world at the detriment of Omar Sneed types.

I just wonder if we're past the days of having a guy watch film of players and practice moves and things of that nature.

Karnowski at Gonzaga has all kinds of old man game - did he have it back in Poland or did Few and staff develop it?

Which is another concern I would have about Tubby and his staff, but again, time will tell.

I think you can tell if a player either has the skills or has the building blocks for the skill.

I think, once a player arrives on campus, it is impossible to improve ball handling. What they bring is what they will have. Same for rebounding. So much of that is desire and instinct. And passing too. Much of that is instinct.

Basically players can improve defense, shooting, and decision making. And strength.

Just think of players that really improved from freshman year to their junior or senior years...what aspects of their games made them better?

Chris Garner was so much better as a senior, mostly due to his shooting a lot better. Antonio Anderson got stronger. Never became a better shooter. Didn't dribble any better. But also defended better.

Carney. Became a better defender.

I can't really think of anyone where I have said, man dude can really dribble so much better now, or wow, he can go to the left now.

My favorite are the cringeworthy times when right handed guys lay the ball up on the left side of the rim. They have to do that awful contortion move instead of using the left hand.

So hopefully this staff is better than the previous staff at evaluations and identifying basketball IQ and higher skill level.

I think young Josh and older Tubby have some of the same issues. Lack of motivational skills especially when the train comes off the track. South Carolina lost to Bammer and Ole Miss and are now in the final four. That's how you do it.

That and being able to shoot helps when playing basketball. 03-wink

Right, so they're going to have to identify needs AND preferences while rounding out the roster.

Need to get some blue collar guys in here who have a really good understanding of the game.

A lot of Pastner teams disgusted me early and then I tuned them out.

This last year disgusted me with that finish and don't think I've been that turned off in a while. Seems to be a common theme with a lot of Tiger fans.

He's gonna have to miracle a revival.

Are they really bad shooters or do they just either take or end up getting bad shots?

How many shots do we take when rushed and guarded with 2 seconds left on the shot clock?

RE: Tubby needs to go get his own Semi Ojeleye - HoopDreams - 03-28-2017 11:24 AM

Here's another:

@VerbalCommits Duke C Sean Obi (RS JR) is leaving the program. Will graduate & is eligible immediately.

Averaged 10 and 9 at Rice, didn't get off the bench hardly at Duke, but has spent time in two DI programs now. 6-9, 255.

That seems to be one of those kids who just thinks he's better than he is. I would bet not Tubby's type.

right now, anybody who's 6-9 and 255 should be Tubby's type

we just missed out on a 6-8, 260 juco to Ole Miss

It's sadly laughable how many JCs and grads and standard transfers are out there right now.

Combined with Memphis talent, man.

An ear to the ground, no stone unturned recruiter would really help this staff.

Right.

I think saluki was being facetious.
