Maybe the Capital, which has four Virginia schools (including CNU) and Salisbury.

Do they have a mascot yet? I'm guessing it'll be something Christian-themed, like Crusaders or Lions.

A mascot is coming soon. Hoping they stay away from Lions. Theres only room for one Big Blue Beast in town. Then again, if we start having to worry about Regent, ODU is in trouble. Then again part 2, I never thought Id see the day we'd have Liberty nipping at our heels either.

Looks like it's coming Friday; the school has a pressed at 6 pm to announce a logo and nickname.

They are now the Regent Royals. Wonder what the long game for them is? D3? Scholarship sports? Do they eventually make the move to D1 (knowing it's a long way off)?

Not bad, figured they would play off Regent, though I was hoping for something more unique. UCSC are the Banana Slugs. Sounds sorta lame, but IMO it's pretty bad ass, AND it sure is one of a kind.

Getting a cameo in "Pulp Fiction" didn't hurt. Several years ago I visited the Seaside amusement park in Santa Cruz. I drove to campus hoping to buy a T-shirt, but the store was closed.

The name is good, but a little too close to "Monarchs" for My taste. They were trying to Get the "go blue" thing started too. They should go w green. I'd be shocked if they were D2 in the next 20 years. They don't have the money LU has and Regent is trying to position itself as the smaller, more academically focused, close knit Christian college in Va. Think Hampden Sydney vs VT.

For the out of towners, this deal is officially dead.

I wonder if Kenny Alexander has already called the arena group to talk about Military Circle.

An arena in that part of town would be awesome IMO. It would probably effect the next light rail spur though, meaning an eastern route to NOB and the airport (no ODU) 03-weeping

VB is just anti-development and growth

I really hope not in the present form or at Military Circle. I want a new arena in Hampton Roads, and I want it in Norfolk but it needs to be downtown. Arenas or most sports facilities save for football stadiums and the odd baseball stadium don't work outside the urban core. You need the critical mass of things around it. The ideal location in Hampton Roads for a new arena is where Scope sits today. As much as I love the old girl and as architecturally significant as it is, if it could be replaced with a new proper sized arena like the Capital One Arena in D.C. (18,500 hockey, 20,000 basketball, 20,000+ concerts) then I will bid her a fond farewell.

How do you suggest they aquire all of that land quickly to make space for an arena at Military Circle?

Agree. I think Military is an awful location. It needs to be somewhere that people actually want to spend time. Downtown definitely makes the most sense.

Scope is only viable spot to build for Norfolk. But like HM, I doubt the money is there to make it work. Hope I'm wrong.

They would likely purchase land from Costco, which would allow Costco to move to a larger site, which is what they want to do.

Without tearing down one of the housing projects near downtown the only open spaces would be Cedar Grove Lot and Lafayette Park.

The Scope should be razed. The renovation costs are already crazy. May as well build new.

The plan to tear all 3 public housing neighboorhoods down will take a decade. Since they're going to shuffle people around and close off vacant buildings, to avoid complete displacement. But the first could be demolished within the next couple years.

RE: Virginia Beach arena update - monarx - 11-08-2017 01:29 PM

The smartest move would have been to put it near Town Center and make it contingent on the LRT going there. Since that didnt happen, I think expanding Scope is the best option if possible. Military Circle is a great, central location near the interchange of interstates, but theres just not enough around there. It could be argued however, that the arena would spur that development. Back when the NHL was considering coming, the talk was to tear down the former Golden Triangle across from Scope and put the arena there. That might also be a possibility.

Then bury the stadium back there where Costco is? It is just a non starter, and generally a terrible location aside from that because the area sucks.

RE: Virginia Beach arena update - Sidewinder - 11-08-2017 01:46 PM

Going by HM's article, it sound like neither VB or Norfolk have the money to build a new arena. If Scope can be renovated for much less, they should do it, but large renovation projects tend to be as costly as building new. So that's probably out. When Scope was built, it was probably considered big enough, but apparently not now. Does Scope continue to attract enough events to justify the cost of upkeep? If the status quo isn't acceptable, then the only options are expand, renovate or tear it down without replacing it.

The Scope is fairly busy. However, Admirals attendance has dropped considerably since the drop from the AHL and the new owners came in. There is concern that they'll leave Norfolk. Without them as an anchor tenant, the maintenance and upkeep costs becomes untenable.

I see your point, but there likely won't be any available land large enough in a central location that doesn't suck. If the arena goes there, I would hope other private development would spring up around it, causing the area to not suck. But renovating Scope seems to be the best option at this point.

What makes it a terrible location?
