Virginia Beach arena update - MonarchManiac - 03-15-2017 10:49 AM

Looks like we have ourselves an arena....

Could this pave the way for a conference tourney bid for VB/Norfolk?

Yup! Was just coming here to post. I've said it before but probably happening this time.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

Too far from campus for CUSA's holding both tourneys. I would expect an A10 tourney first, unless that changes.

Is it, though? It would be far from the cozy setup in Birmingham or El Paso but it is two arenas. Virginia Beach could also get creative and put a court in the convention center across the street for the women's tournament.

What about hosting a holiday tournament? That would be cool.

Put a court in the convention center for the womens and host the men at the new arena. I like your idea and sounds like it could be a good way to go.

Also, I know it is a MAJOR pipe dream...but this sports fan would love love love to have an NHL or NBA team locally to root for. Probably will never happen, but a guy can dream.

Harry wrote an article last week and noted that this arena wouldnt fulfill the requirements for a pro team. So, don't even bother getting your hopes up. It may be good enough to get an arena team but nothing more.

A10 is spoken for until 2022 (D.C. next year, Brooklyn from 2019-21). And they seem really happy at Barclays—the only reason they weren't there this year or won't be there next year is the ACC worked a deal to get in there. So while I wouldn't shut the door on the A10 showing up at some point, CUSA is a lot more likely.

From the article;
"The Virginia Beach venue won’t have all the amenities of most major sports arenas, nor is it likely to ever become home to a major sports team. Milwaukee and Sacramento are building new NBA arenas that will cost more than $500 million apiece.

Developers acknowledged in late 2015 that it would cost $80 million to upgrade the Virginia Beach arena for an NHL or NBA team, and that the entire structure of the deal would have to be renegotiated."

I can live with that. If the arena can be upgraded to NBA/NHL standards down the line, easier to do that than go the traditional local route of waiting for an opportunity and *then* trying to work out the arena details, presuming the would-be team is OK playing multiple seasons at Scope, the Ted or in Richmond in the meantime.

RE: Virginia Beach arena update - Quagmire - 03-15-2017 01:32 PM

So what does this group think the net/net on this arena would be for ODU? I'm concerned about another group/entity out soliciting event sponsorship dollars in an already thin Fortune 500 area and the impact on Hoops and Football.

Also, would this mean we can now bulldoze Scope and move the Admirals to the Beach? Do we really need Scope, Echols Hall, and the Ted within 5 miles of each other anyhow?

RE: Virginia Beach arena update - bit_9 - 03-15-2017 01:39 PM

I don't see anything happening in VB replacing anything happening in Norfolk. I personally feel we have another generation to go before they'll partner on such a idea or the 3 big cities start playing nice/merging.

That has been a concern of ODUSP. There's only so many dollars to go around for signage and such.

I don't think there is much chance of the Ads going to VB. As for sponsorship dollars at ODU maybe? It will depend on what ends up going to the VB arena. If they are going to stay heavy on the big concert/family show stuff The Ted and ODU will be fine. Between the two basketball programs, The Ted has 33 event nights from November to March. Football is another six or seven. The combined schedules between basketball and football with the associated sponsorship and media buys with ODU Sports should insulate things from being impacted too badly from the new arena.

ADP just set up shop in downtown Norfolk and they're a major fortune 500 company. So far as I know they're not sponsoring anything locally yet so if I were they arena developers that's the first place I'd go.
