2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - Bucfaithful - 03-09-2017 12:39 PM

I know it's not yet offseason for us, but I wanted to capture departures and additions to rosters as they unfold.

RE: 2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - Bucfaithful - 03-09-2017 12:41 PM

According to JucoRecruiting.com, Mercer has gained a pledge from 7' Harvey Barr:https://twitter.com/JucoRecruiting/status/839283434279297025

Doesn't mercer already have two 7 footers?

6-10 J.J. N'Ganga, 5th yr transfer, and 7-1 Andrew Fishler, redshirt Senior: both therefore gone.

Returning post players are 6-9 255 Desmond Ringer, who will be a senior, and 6-10 280 walk on Mac Brydon, who will be a sophomore.

RE: 2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - dashspartan - 03-09-2017 05:02 PM

Gotcha. Knew they had a lot of height on their team. Didn't realize it was all gone after this year. Ringer will be a load to deal with for teams next year as he really started getting his game in gear by about February.

Mercer will be in a nice position next year. If Coach Hoffman wants to, he can start an all-senior lineup. This same tactic helped produce the upset over Duke (Mercer was the only team to start 5 seniors in every game at the D1 level in 2013-14).

Mercer will have 6 seniors next year:
Strawberry, Holland, Rivers, Jelks, and Ringer would be the top 5 returning seniors. Plus Rashad Lewis, who played significant minutes this year as Strawberry's PG backup.

I hope Ethan Stair can also return from injury. He would be a huge addition to the lineup. Cory Kilby, Ryan Johnson, and Jaylen Stowe also got significant time. Darius Roy was only used sparingly as a freshman, but that's no surprise with all that was in front of him.

RE: 2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - shampoo - 03-09-2017 06:58 PM

I think next year will be even more competitive than current. With the 1st place tie, ETSU, Furman, and UNCG should be able to find decent to strong replacements for what's being lost. Mercer is always a team I'm wary of. Hard to keep Bob down long....If Forbes is back, I've not seen him held down yet and don't feel it's possible!

RE: 2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - Bucster - 03-09-2017 09:42 PM

Samford will be improved too.

Mercer has a team that was at the top of the conference in defense and rebounding. They need scoring help since they were 6th in field goal percentage (.447) and 8th in 3 point percentage (.329) in conference play. Can Stair help out? They return their top 7 (Holland, Strawberry, Jelks, Rivers, Ringer, Johnson and Kilby). The guys they are losing (Fishler and N'Ganga) didn't do much. I expect Bob Hoffman to be hot on the recruiting trail.

Mercer loses less than anybody except Samford, who also return their top 7 (Walker, Cunningham, Denzel-Dyson, Alex Thompson, Sharkey, Chambers, Hopkins) and lose only Terry Brutus (not much more effective than N'Ganga or Fishler). But Samford gets Alabama starting point guard, 5-10 4 star athlete Justin Coleman eligible. He's been practicing with the team all year, and ought to be a real shot of adrenalin.

I'd love to see how Forbes goes to work recruiting this year.

Furman ok, now they've got a tough task - with little advance fanfare Niko Medved made Furman a team that improved every year and was an especially tough out in the tournament. Now he moves to Drake and leaves the Paladins wondering where to find a coach nearly as good. (EDIT: assistant Bob Richey hired).
On the court, they lose only Acox - but that's a big loss on a team short of size: their 2nd highest scorer, 2nd in the conference in rebounding, and first in hard nosed play. They'll really need 6-8 Rafferty back at full strength after 2 back surgeries in 6 months, and 6-8 Jalen Williams to start becoming what their fans think he can be. Gurley is a promising signee but will have to add muscle and adjust to D1.
Recruits thus far:
Noah Gurley 6-7 190 HS SR 2* SF LOI Fayetteville GA; other offers from Tampa and Charleston Southern
Alex Hunter 5-10 150 HS Sr 2* PG LOI Raleigh NC, Leesville Rd HS; other offers from Manhattan, High Point, UMBC, UNC Asheville, Loyola (MD), Lipscomb

UNCG returns some studs, especially Alonso and rapidly developing 6-9 James Dickey. But they lose 2 of their top 3 in Diante Baldwin (their most complete guard who could defend as well as score) and R.J. White (best big man with muscle, nimble feet, soft hands and nice shooting touch).
Signee: 6-4 185 SG HS 2* Kaleb Hunter, Raleigh NC; Offers VCU, ASU, ODU, Murray, etc.

Wofford loses Captain Hook (Eric Garcia) and best front court player Ryan Sawvell, but returns blistering shooter Fletcher McGee, a developing Nathan Hoover at guard, 6-7 245 Cameron Jackson, and 6-11 Pegram. These guys are all sophomores, except for freshman Hoover, and could take big steps forward.
Signees:
Keve Aluma, 6-6 SF 2*, HS Sr Berlin MD; offers Canisius, MD-EastShor, UMBC, UTEP, etc.
Storm Murphy, 5’9 155 2* PG, HS Sr, Middleton, WI; offers D2 only
Verbal commit from Tray Hollowell, 6'2" 2* PG, HS Sr. Hopkinsville, KY, University Heights Academy; offers from Oklahoma State, EKU, Ohio U, ETSU, St. Louis, Samford (?), Missouri (?)

Chatt Matt McCall gets out of Dodge with a $520,000 raise at UMass, leaving the ashes of a team that was the consensus pick to win and that finished losing 5 in a row amid talk of fights and complaints of 'no heart' by fans. He's replace by Wisconsin Assistant Lamont Paris. Good luck, sir.
Their top 5 players are gone (Tuoyo, Jones, McLean, Pryor and Burroughs-Cook). They will rebuild around 6-7 220 Chuck Ester coming back from ACL (EDIT: no, Ester seems to be leaving), 6-10 Makinde London, 6-6 Iowa transfer Andrew Fleming, 6-4 Nat Dixon, 6-1 Rodney Chatman, 6-1 Makale Foreman and 6-7 Trayvon Massenburg. 6-1 David Jean Baptiste comes back from redshirt.
Verbal Commits says that sophomore guard Peyton Woods will transfer.
They announced 5 signees in 2016:
JUCO JOAN DURAN: 6-7 post from Eastern Florida CC 2*, played high school at Hamilton Heights in Chattanooga;Info: http://mocnation.yuku.com/topic/2549?page=1
(EDIT: Released from LOI): DeMarcus MITCHELL: a 6-7/8 230 lb post 2* from Germantown HS in Memphis TN
Info: http://mocnation.yuku.com/topic/2766/Mocs-pick-up-commitment-from-Demarcus-Mitchell
(EDIT: Released from LOI): JALEN CRUTCHER 6-3 PG 3* VerbalCommits from Memphis Ridgeway HS, same HS as Greg Pryor and Jonathan Burroughs-Cook.
http://mocnation.yuku.com/topic/2522/Mocs-pick-up-commitment-from-Jalen-Crutcher
(EDIT: Released from LOI): TERRY NOLAN, JR. 6-3 guard from Essex MD 2* INFO: http://mocnation.yuku.com/topic/2459?page=1
(EDIT: No longer in the picture): JUCO ERIC TURNER 6-5 from Gainesville FL and Chipola CC, 3* Verbal Commits. http://mocnation.yuku.com/topic/2386/Eric-Turner-commits-to-UTC
Verbal Commits also lists several JUCO offers outstanding.

As of April 27, 2017, it's
Maybe 6-7 220 Chuck Ester who is still listed on the roster despite the Times Free Press report saying that he's going
6-10 Makinde London, talented, but criticized by fans for lacking heart, and who is probably glad to see Matt McCall go;
(EDIT: word is that this guy is leaving, too) 6-6 Iowa Transfer Andrew Fleming, former Tennessee "AA" Mr. Basketball;
6-4 Nat Dixon;
6-1 Rising So. PG Rodney Chatman;
6-1 Rising So. SG Makale Foreman;
6-7 Trayvon Massenburg (little used);
6-1 Redshirt Fr. David Jean Baptiste
So far they add only JUCO Joan Duran, slim 6-7 post who played high school ball in Chattanooga and went to Eastern Florida CC
EDIT: as of May 1, 2 new signees - 6-4 210 high school shooting guard Jonathan Bryant from Florida
6-2 210 guard transfer from Fairfield, Jerry Johnson Jr.

For the 3 lower ranked teams, VMI finally loses the great Q.J. Peterson, also quality player Julian Eleby and # 3 scorer Trey Chapman. 3 signed recruits (Tragen Fahl, Sarju Patel and Jordan Ratliffe) drew almost no other interest. It looks like a rough year ahead.
Western Carolina loses Deriece Parks, who missed most of the year with injury anyway. Not much is added by recruits
Marcus Thomas 6-4 SG HS Sr, 2* Charlotte NC (Moravian); and
Matt Halvorsen 5-11 PG HS Sr 2* Arden NC (Christ school), both of whom did draw some other low major interest. Sophomore Elijah Pughsley will reportedly transfer.
The Citadel keeps it's top 5 players, including freshman spark plug Preston Parks and skilled sophomore Zane Najdawi. Duggar Baucom adds 3* guard 6-2 Tariq Simmons with offers from Charleston and Charleston Southern and interest from USC, Clemson and Stanford (caution - Verbally Committed, but not yet signed: EDIT - it's official, he's signed). Other additions include Hayden Brown LOI 6-5 218 2*HS Sr; Derek Webster LOI 6-5 210 2* HS Sr; Robert Johnson LOI 6-8 205 2* HS Sr; and Kaiden Rice VC 6-6 2* HS Sr. Could things be looking up for the Citadel?

Samford and Mercer should definitely step up -
Furman, UNCG and Wofford have losses, but potential. Furman has the burden of replacing fine young coach Niko Medved.
ETSU The whole front court goes with 6-9 Hanner Mosquera-Perea, 6-8 Tevin Glass and 6-7 Isaac Banks (excepting only 6-5 David Burrell), to say nothing of the wondrous A.J. Merriweather, and the man who was the REAL SoCon POY in T.J. Cromer.
But returnees Desonta Bradford, Jermaine Long, Devontavius Payne, David Burrell, freshman Jason Williams and 6-3 Longwood transfer athletic Kanayo Obi-Rapu and, maybe, 7-0 Peter Jurkin are no slouches. Add powerful athletic 6-3 193 shooting guard recruit Bo Hodges, two time Tennessee AA Mr. Basketball, and the Bucs backcourt stacks up pretty well with anyone in the SoCon. And just wait till Steve Forbes works his recruiting magic.
The Bucs really need to see offensive improvement from Jermaine Long and Jason Williams - they've got to do what A.J. did and make themselves reliable 3 point shooters. They want Devontavius to go from hot sometimes to a really consistent offensive threat every time out. And for Desonta to continue his evolution into a big time guard in all aspects of his game. David Burrell slowed a bit his second time through the conference, but his big defensive performance against UNCG (6 blocks) and his offensive display against Florida (11 points on 3-6 from 3) are reminders of what might lay ahead. He and Devontavius could show us the second year improvement that JUCO's often make.
Chattanooga can't be worse than they were at season's end. They needed to make some changes. But that whole situation is a big question mark right now. First big challenge is filling the void at coach. Things could still be pretty toxic.

There should be some sparks flying in the SoCon next year.

RE: 2017 SOCON-offseason superthread - Efan - 03-10-2017 07:34 AM

Chattanooga's biggest problem is Matt McCall. From what I've seen dude can't control the locker room and it's a matter of time before the record becomes glaringly obvious. Maybe he'll mature soon and figure it out, but right now I haven't seen anything to think he will.

Do you think it possible that London will leave the program after the obvious tension between him and McCall?

I have no idea what goes on inside that program - some Moc fans might be more enlightening if they chose.

But, as you say, there were obvious tensions with Makinde and McCall. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that there was a break.

On the other hand, McCall swallowed hard to play McLean.

Makinde is nothing like the player that McLean was, but 6-10 athletes are hard to come by and make coaches do strange things.

UNCG gets Syracuse in the NIT. After his comments re the city of Greensboro, I would love to see Boeheim go down to the Spartans.

Looks like it's up in Syracuse. That kind of sucks for UNCG. Tough draw albeit a humorous match up based on the comments.

Yep. That is the only place Syracuse can win a game. Tough place to play. If this game was in Greensboro UNC-G would be favored.
