Potential 1st Round Matchups: Who do you want? - Seahawk Nation 08 - 03-07-2017 09:35 PM

I don't know nearly enough about the teams across the college basketball landscape to speak on which matchups would be best for us, but with Selection Sunday a long 5 days away, I figured I'd get a thread going!

Since we could be anywhere from a 10-12 seed, it would seem, there's a multitude of teams we can face. So we have to cast a wide net when we look at our potential matchup.

The cynical side of me could see the Committee matching us up with a team from a non-P5 Conference just to eliminate one of us. Wichita State or Saint Mary's come to mind there.

Because Pitino's kid coaches Minnesota, I'd put them in the category of team I'd hope we do NOT get paired up with. Also, up until a bad loss to Wisconsin on Sunday, they were on a roll and putting up tons of points.

The same would be true for Iowa State, South Carolina or Cincinnati for another reason: They're all in the Top 12 in the nation in turnover margin (we're # 8). A team that mimics our style in any way would be a bad matchup in my book.

I'd prefer to face a team like Wisconsin, who isn't a heavy scoring team and relies on a more "traditional" style of play. Virginia would be decent for similar reasons. And I also wouldn't mind another shot at Duke (unlikely) or perhaps some revenge against Maryland (even though we last faced them in the tourney 14 years ago).

Other potential opponents include Creighton, Notre Dame, Oklahoma St, SMU, and maybe a few others.

What do you guys think?

Wisconsin, UVA, St. Mary's, Creighton all seem like good matchups.

Notre Dame & Iowa St. would be 2 matchups that would be terrible for UNCW IMO. Minnesota & Cinci probably wouldn't be ideal either

I really really really don't want to play an ACC team.

RE: Potential 1st Round Matchups: Who do you want? - 82hawk - 03-08-2017 06:47 AM

I'm not sure why Minnesota would be bad? We played Louisville pretty well in Keatts first year, and we do better in up tempo games. Wisconsin, UVA, etc. are bigger, better CofC teams. Also, look how Clemson manhandled us and they suck.

I prefer a faster pace opponent regardless of who they are. We won't et Louisville, so a Louisville light is fine by me. We have a lot of shooters which most up tempo teams don't have. Duke likes to run and defend, and look at how we played with them.

The last thing we need is a low scoring game, trying to rebound and stop a really big P5 team in the post.

Duke hasn't "defended" in years.

Does hand-checking not count? 02-13-banana

But seriously, Duke has guys like Kennard, Tatum and Allen that are really hard to defend, but aren't great defenders. And then they have guys like Jefferson, Jackson and Matt Jones that are good defenders, but won't beat you offensively. The size advantage Duke would have with Tatum, Jefferson and Giles scares me. I don't think we'll see a rematch, nor do I particularly want one.

I have no idea who I want to play in the tournament. I tend to agree with 82 and his thought process, but I think we can beat UVa this year.

UNCW can play with anybody...doesn't matter.

You just slayed this thread with one sentence. I'm gonna go hang my head in shame now.

haha! That's the way they think, I asked Devontae at the hotel and he said "don't matter". So let's go with that 02-13-banana

I am more concerned with what style of officiating we get, not who we play.

Honestly, THAT could be a much bigger factor.

Which is why I really don't want an ACC opponent, specifically Duke/UNC.

RE: Potential 1st Round Matchups: Who do you want? - B_Hawk06 - 03-08-2017 10:33 AM

I know, we won't play UNC, they're a one seed... but if we advance I want to avoid them.

Well I don't think we'll be a 9-seed so we're safe there. Only if we make it to the Sweet 16 would that be a possibility.

And if we're in the Sweet 16, we'll be rioting in the streets that whole week.

What Devontae Cacok says, goes. Plain and simple.

04-bow

THIS!
Excellent point!

If we had had the refs that did the game after the Duke UNCW game last year we would have beaten Duke

RE: Potential 1st Round Matchups: Who do you want? - 82hawk - 03-08-2017 06:16 PM

The difference between the 5 and 6 seeds is tremendous.

Projected 5 and 6 seeds:

5- Notre Dame, UVA, Wisconsin, Maryland
6- SMU, St. Mary's, Iowa St., VT

If we can somehow slide to an 11-6 game, our chances improve greatly.

If those are indeed the 8 teams on those seed lines it's tough to disagree with your position

Does wake losing last night help us get to the 11 line?
