Gary Waters announced his retirement today. In addition per sports talk host Les Levine Cleveland St. is considering dropping D1 basketball. Just a rumor but that would be interesting.

I know attendance has been off and there is talk of taking down the Wolstein Center using the site and putting up something smaller - so who knows
In any case all the best to Gary - he is a fine man and did a great job putting us on the map with good kids and solid defense - all the best in the future GW - hope to see you at the MACC someday

He had things going pretty well at CSU too. Then he got clobbered by that senior transfer rule. He lost a lot of talent and it's never been quite the same.

Couldn't agree more. His emphasis on defense carried over and remained a staple of Kent State Basketball through Jim Christian's tenure. The paint was hard hat only zone in those days. Good memories to be sure!

I believe CSU hired former Akron AD guy Mike Thomas and he may be the one to get GW to leave - sounds like some folks in Cleveland want a high profile hire but given current economics, concern over enrollment, tuition and spending that could be tough. Keep in mind they dropped baseball and wrestling (but this was added back with support from an alum)and they added lacrosse as we and many small colleges are doing. The PD points out in their story that GW was victimized by the graduate transfer rule a couple of years ago - we were very fortunate that Jimmy Hall resisted this temptation. I spoke with Akron's KD a couple of years ago - he foresees a day when players will be able to transfer without sitting out a year

CSU wont get a big time hire. what big name is going to go there if there are talking about downsizing arena?
I would bet Jared Calhoun from D2 fairmount state might get this job. He's an up and comer in coaching ranks and someone I wanted us to look at if Sendy ever left.

I doubt they would drop men's basketball. OLNWFLSH, a "high profile" hire like Rollie Massimino? That was a disaster. I too can foresee a time when players don't need to sit out a year. Why should they have to sit out? Coaches don't when they bolt, nor does anyone else. Sure, the NCAA is a voluntary organization that institutions need not join, but it isn't voluntary for players who want to play for the school of their choice. I realize that more transfers would make it tough on the fans and the coaches, but to heck with the coaches. They get paid plenty to put up with all the aggravation. I'm 100% for more rights for the players, the ones who actually play the game that people want to watch.

On not having to sit a year, it's hard to argue against it from a fairness standpoint. But players would be constantly moving around even more than they are now. And it would especially hurt mid-majors- they'd lose many of their best players on a regular basis.

Good point, delflash. The mid-majors would become like the AA level in baseball. The majors are now like AAA and lose their best players early to the NBA. The good news would be that if you're losing lots of players to the major schools, you must have had good players and have been winning. Then, too, if a high school kid knew he didn't have to sit out when transferring, maybe more kids would be willing to start at the mid-major level rather than going to the majors and redshirting or sitting on the bench a year or two. There would be lots of pros and cons. It certainly change the college basketball landscape more than anything has since freshmen eligibility was restored in 1972.

I would think dropping basketball would be a no go as I believe basketball is a requirement for being division 1 so unless you are willing to drop out of div 1 then you have to keep basketball.

Oh yea - good ole Rollie!! - I heard Jim Groce - he's probably going to get axed at Illinois. BTW I watched BC play Wake yesterday another mediocre year for Jim Christian. Speaking of rumor mill mention has been made of Geno Ford at Youngstown State to replace Slocum

Illinois is the other team I follow besides Kent State, and it is not a given that John Groce will be fired. He has a highly ranked recruiting class coming in, and the Illini have finished strong (except for Saturday's loss to Rutgers). If it's a home run hire, then maybe. But I don't think they will make a change just to make a change.

With no baseball team, football team, downsizing their arena and a wrestling program that is just barely D1 maybe they are thinking about D2 status. The city of Cleveland sure doesn't care too much about their athletic teams.

Gary Waters was a great college coach. He took care of his players and made sure they were serious in the classroom as well as on the court. I hope he finds ways to continue to contribute to basketball in NE Ohio.

Bill Nichols used the word retirement in today's (3/9) PD. I suspect in this case had he been 60 years old resign would be the word but at 65 they made it sound better using the word retire. I doubt it was totally Waters idea either way.
