Sure. Its not a surprise that 2 of the worst seeded teams (Wisconsin and Wichita State) had a couple of the best games of the tournament. I feel for both Villanova and Wichita State, but at the end of the day you have to beat top tier teams to win the title, matchups be damned.

This tournament has been exactly what the committee wanted, exciting matchups. They intentionally goofed up seeding for good matchups, and they got them. Can't complain too much about it. MSU was the only team that really didn't have a chance at victory in the 2nd round, though UVA and FSU really flopped out. It has been a tournament with a lot of good basketball being played, and it is an even year, like most people know ahead of time.

An interesting note for one of tonight's games is the Michigan as a 7 seed is favored against the 3rd seeded Ducks. Guess Vegas thinks the injury for Oregon will catch up to them this game.

I think the games tonight are the more interesting slate than tomorrows. I think the Gonzaga/WVU game should be a lot of fun to watch for basketball purists, probably not so interesting for the general population.

As expected 3 games went down to the buzzer and the other was an expected blowout. This has still been a good tournament showing lots of balance between teams, which is what many have said all year.

I get irritated when I hear on the news this morning about Xavier's "Cinderella Run" because they're an 11 seed. If anything, the only "Cinderella" left in the tournament is Gonzaga, because they're technically a mid-major and doesn't receive the big conference revenues that the other teams get.

It is a Cinderella run. They were one of the last teams in and on a run. However, they were a top 10 team at one point this season, before an injury, so I agree it is hard to accept that team out of all of them as a Cinderella.

Don't fool yourself, at this point Gonzaga is on level terms for funding, outside of tournament bonuses given to conferences for NCAA wins. Gonzaga spends $7.2M a year on men's basketball. Drexel spends $7.1M on all 9 of its men's sports combined

So we've got UNC (#6 on offense, #18 on defense) vs. Oregon (#16 on offense, #19 on defense) and Gonzaga (#14 on offense, #1 on defense) vs. South Carolina (#105 on offense, #2 on defense).

Who do you got?

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - Spearsie - 03-27-2017 02:57 PM

UNC and Gonzo - Favoring UNC in a great matchup. UNC is just too hard to handle on the boards.

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - DrachenFire - 03-27-2017 11:16 PM

Zags checked off more of the boxes, they beat UNC.

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - dan10 - 03-28-2017 06:15 AM

I agree that is appears to be Gonzaga vs UNC. I think South Carolina is an extremely poor mans west virginia on the defensive side and I dont see Gonzaga losing to that style, if west virginia couldn't get it done. I think Oregon will give UNC a run for their money. Oregon just shoots the ball too well, and UNC goes in long spells of not being able to hit shots. With that said I think UNC's size will be too much for Oregon and then too much Gonzaga.

In the men's NIT final last night TCU whooped up on Georgia Tech

Gonzaga is actually bigger than UNC at every position except SF. They should have the ability to limit UNC's Oreb advantage and as the better shooting team ultimately prevail. They'll now lose to SCar tomorrow night.

They are by physical height but UNC plays bigger than Gonzaga does. I agree Gonzaga is one of the few teams who height-wise can match up with UNC, but the ability and use of that height is quite a bit different.

Maybe, I just want to win some pools!

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - dan10 - 04-02-2017 07:50 AM

UNC tried at the end to give Oregon a chance with 4 straight missed free throws, but Oregon declined to take any of their gifts.

Both games we entertaining and went about as expected, though I didnt think South Carolina was going to fully comeback and make a game of it once they got down big. However, that is how South Carolina played all tournament.

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - DrachenFire - 04-03-2017 11:27 AM

Gonzaga has tended to let teams back in the game so far in the tournament, save their first. I think I heard the announcers during their second game against Northwestern wonder if they pull back the throttle because they didn't want to beat teams in conference play too badly and it's carried over. In any rate, one of the big questions facing the Zags was how they'd handle the pressure of closing out close games since they didn't face all that many during the season. Unlike my nerves, since they're my champ, they've seemed unfazed. Hoping for a good one tonight and the "original" Cinderella to finally leave the ball with the prince.

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - dan10 - 04-03-2017 11:54 AM

It should indeed be a dandy tonight. Makes no real difference to me but if picking between UNC and Gonzaga, I am wanting Gonzaga to win every single time. For the sake of our challenge, go UNC!

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - DrachenFire - 04-03-2017 10:42 PM

Zags and Karnowski miss way too many shots in close, costs them a title. Second half was horridly officiated.

Congrats Dan on winning Always a Dragon pool.

RE: NCAA Tournament Discussion - dan10 - 04-05-2017 02:52 PM

Go me. Was a great game though even if Gonzaga unraveled right at the end.
