RE: Basketball All-Conference Team - CatMom - 03-06-2017 05:32 PM

First TXST player to make (any) all-conference first team since 2003.

Hervey is a Junior? Hasn't he been at UTA like 6 years?

In any sport? There's no way that's true.

Basketball...SLC, WAC or SBC.

Come on, you can read between the lines here. Did I really have to put in basketball on a basketball All Conf team thread or are you just splitting hairs?

Come on, you know that "splitting hairs" is what comes from posting too much on that "other" board . . (BobcatFans). . . . It's that board's primary pastime . .

"First player to make any all-conference first team" sounded like you were referring to all sports to me.

Sorry I misinterpreted.

eh, it's ok. I can see where it might not come off as intended. It's all good.

RE: Basketball All-Conference Team - EigenEagle - 03-06-2017 08:29 PM

Probably the first time we've had more than one guy on the first team in quite a long time, if not ever.

I actually thought the same thing. Now I understand the wording, with the multiple conference thing.

So the team that takes the crown by a large margin lands only two on the three-team list...

Jorge Bilbao got screwed if you ask me. Yes the Southern guard tandem is good, but in a way that shows the flaw, they got exploited when there was no inside presence and the guards couldn't carry them. When our guards couldn't carry us, Bilbao was there to help carry the load. When our guards were effective, he was so much better inside. He was 9th in rebounding and second in offensive rebounds within the SBC. If it is stats driven, then yea, but he controlled the inside to allow Hervey and company to flourish. I can win with 13 Blibao's on the roster.

Looks about right to me. Just based off the eye test, I think Tookie Brown is the best player in the conference, but that might just be because he went off against us both games.

I think you make a good point. He was a force in our game with UTA.

Bilbao certainly should have gotten some all conference recognition.

At the very least, he's almost certainly the most fun player to watch in the conference.

Tough call between Simonds and Pearson for Freshman of the Year. They're very close statistically.

I'm biased of course but I give the edge to Pearson.

RE: Basketball All-Conference Team - _x_ - 03-07-2017 12:21 PM

Yep. It was obviously gonna come down to Simonds and Pearson (Ajayi 3rd probably), but I have to say I was a bit shocked Simonds got it over Pearson. I really thought Pearson likely had it locked up.

Well Simonds averaged 15 a game in conference, scoring double digits in all but one of those games. He also had five 20+ point games in that stretch. I think GSU's success will hinge on his play in the tourney. Pearson did play very well in the game I saw them play at GSU so it is certainly close.

Big problem with Bilbao is he is a big complainer, rubs a lot of folks the wrong way. I don't know if he's every committed a foul in his mind.

RE: Basketball All-Conference Team - TrojanNation - 03-08-2017 10:01 AM

I havent really paid attention to the list in recent years (for obvious reasons) but is the first team younger than in years past?

I take that to mean that the conference is going to continue to be very competive over the next couple of years.

I have seen him raise his hands and I have seen him get rightfully upset at calls that aren't going both ways. For whatever reason, he gets more scrutiny and less benefit of the doubt.

And there are a few times where he seemed wrong for the reaction.
