ECU beats UConn - Likely 3-way tie for 5th... - hsvtiger - 03-01-2017 09:18 PM

...between UConn, Memphis, and Tulsa, all at 9-9.
How do the tie-breakers work out in this case?

Head to Head:
Tulsa beat UConn in only meeting and split with Memphis, 2-1 record with tied teams;
UConn lost to Tulsa in only meeting and split with Memphis, 1-2;
Memphis split with both, 2-2;

If you go by W% among tied teams, Tulsa would get the nod. However, it is not quite a fair tie-breaker as Tulsa only played UConn once and it was at home, winning in OT.
In Memphis' split with both teams, Memphis has the margin-of-victory advantage in each case.

I have no idea what the actual tie-breaker criteria is.
UConn has the best chance of breaking the tie, as each have one probable loss against SMU or Cincy, but UConn's likely loss is at home.

Hmmmm!

Very interesting indeed

Believe someone said during a game last week that over all record will be first tie breaker. Which all but locks up the 5 spot and a date with Taco in the first round.

Well, KUDOS for that $hitty non-conf schedule then!

If we beat Tulane we're the 5 seed and get a first round bye

Hold up

Memphis, Tulsa and uconn all have 8 losses. Unless I'm missing something, we have to essentially win both remaining games? What if we lose to SMU?

UConn is the sick man of the ACC.

I think the assumption is we all have 1 game left against Cinci or SMU and we will all likely lose that game.

Assuming the remaining games go as expected, Gianotto says that we will win the tie-breaker by virtue of our win over Houston which would give us the BEST win over conf team. Unless we lose to Tulane, or Tulsa beats SMu, or UConn beats Cincy, we will get the 5th seed with a likely tourney path of UCF, Cincy, SMU.

The tiebreaker is probably on the AAC website

I think Gianotta is right. Whoever did the best against teams in front if them in conference standings. However, Tulane could very well beat us with another "I really don't care" start.

Gianotto is now saying that Tulsa would get 5th based on H2H among 3 teams. See the 1st post of this thread for those details. This might not be bad for us. We'd get USF, then Houston. If UConn could knock off SMU in the other Q-Final game on our side of the bracket, we could face UConn in the semis. When that game and we are 22-12 heading to conf finals. Might be enough to get us back in NIT discussion if we cant finish out championship.

I stand corrected: If Memphis, UConn & Tulsa finish in 3-way tie, Tulsa gets 5 seed even though Memphis has individual tiebreakers over both

SMU will be number one seed and on the other side of bracket. Uconn would be playing Cincinnati.

Yes, I think you are correct. I still had Cincy in 1st place in my mind. By the way, I would not be shocked to see UConn beat Cincy his weekend. Senior night and coming off the loss at ECU, UConn will be ready to go. If they did when, they would retake 5th, but we'd likely stay at 6th with Tulsa taking 7th.

It gets rather complicated. But being the 6th seed has some advantages I think. First of which is I think we beat Houston in the rubber match and I think we found out we could play with Cincinnati after we decided to get up off the mat. You never know in college hoops. Who knows, we may catch fire like Joe Jackson's freshman year.

I don't give a bull shite about the fricking NIT and the players don't either.
