I'm not sure where he's getting his list of starters from to compare with returning players. USA is returning seven starters on offense that were slated to start the Arizona Bowl (one of them didn't because of an injury sustained in practice) and another seven on defense.

I guess I'm not disputing the numbers but I can only think of about 4 guys we lost who we're really going to have a hard time replacing. We lost our starting WR's, for example, but we have a zillion receivers. And other than Jayshawn Jordan we lost some highly replaceable DBs.

Our strengths last year were throwing the ball and stuffing the run and given who we have coming back we should be just as good at those things this year.

Am I recalling correctly that App will have 7 senior who are 4 year starters next season: Lamb, Nunn, Gossett, Boggs, Stringer, Meadors, Howard.

Howard is the only one to start all 12 games as a T Fr and every game since. Lamb & Nunn got the starting nod 2 games into their RS Fr year Stringer & Gossett started their last 7 games a RS Fr. Boggsd & Meadors started the last 6 games as True Fr.

The Apps will have a lot of experience back. However, 2018 will be a completely different story with tons of new faces.

Well, we will suck and have a new coach for '18.

I am really surprised you have not let your coach go by now. You could possibly luck out however, if Ole Miss is forced to let Freeze go. But any number of coaches would improve your situation.

If we suck again this year we will have a new coach too. If Summers had not overhauled his offensive coaches he would be gone now

There is a discrepancy and I trust your numbers at 14 returning starters. But even if these players were accounted for, 14 would be misleading in a way since several players that would have been starters that were out for the season will be available this year. We have a tough schedule, so it might be harder to have a better record, but I'm hopeful for a better conference record at least.

Well, his current payout is pretty high. Pretty sure he will get at least this upcoming year to right the ship. New AD onboard probably gives him a chance. We will see...........07-coffee3

Yeah, I didn't even get into the projected starters that were hurt before the season even started. I figured even an OCD numbers guy like Phil Steele probably sets the standard as having actually started games in 2016 to be counted. That's what's a little surprising, since apparently he left off players that started because of injury but doesn't count that those original starters are returning. Seems to me the easiest way to do it is to look at the depth chart for the last game of the 2016 season for each team and count the underclassmen starters as returning.

RE: SBC's Returning Starters For 2017 (Phil Steele) - TroyFootball05 - 03-03-2017 02:21 PM

Every fanbase likely has a story on how they actually return 18 starters if you account for xyz. Phil Steele's list is more of a baseline estimate in that regard. His returning contribution percentage chart (% of total yards offensively, and % of tackles defensively that return) is a much better estimate on who returns what. That will be interesting to see.

Not really. If you have two or three guys that only started the bowl game I wouldn't consider them a returning starter. I would put the bare minimum at three games to be considered a returning starter. It would be very difficult for Steele or anyone to research it fully, though.

Yeah, we're certainly not going to be sneaking up on anybody OOC with the element of surprise this year vs last year. We're going to get everybody's A-game I would think.

Unfortunately, barring 3-9 or worse disaster he is probably not going anywhere for two years. We just gave the OC a two year deal, I doubt we are going to find a coach worth a crap that is going to take a job with no say in the OC position and I doubt we have the money to buy out Summers, pay a new coach and two OC's. This is going to be a two year ride with CTS just hope for the best.
