There are some damn good coaching combos on that list.

I had the same reaction as I went down that list. The ACC isn't taking a back seat to anybody on that front.

Switch Cuse and VTech

It would be interesting plugging these schools and duos into other conferences. VT sticks out to me as a school and duo that would be ranked higher in almost every other conference.

RE: Ranking ACC FB/MBB Coaching Duos 2017 - nzmorange - 02-22-2017 09:21 PM

Dino is at worst an OK coach. Jimmy is one of the best to ever coach. He's probably not *the* best, but he is a HoF coach. That combo is in the top half of any conference.

It's probably not *the* top of every conference, but it's in the top half.

My top 5:

FSU: Football at the top hoops very respectable and a traditionally non-hoops school
Louisville: Football has much talent but seems to fall short, hoops speaks for itself
Duke: Hoops rules the roost and football is good, but let's face it, the Coastal is no proving ground for football
UNC: See Duke
Syracuse: Hoops rules. Football has a proven coach having success in his changes, expect big things once he has his players in place.

This group is interchangeable (in no particular order), plus any duo in this group could easily move to the top 5 over the next few years:

Miami: Richt is a proven commodity, hoops has come a long ways
Clemson: DB is elite and the hoops is on the upswing
UVA: Tough place to stand out but two coaches are doing a good job. Bennett is a class act by all accounts and can coach with the best of them
VATech: This could be a top duo in a few years when the hoops HOF coaches start retiring. Fuentes could be great on the gridiron
Pitt: Narduzzi could be great, jury is out on Stallings, but let's be honest, is winning in hoops against 4 HoF coaches an easy task?
GATech: Like UVA, tough place to stand out, Johnson has perpetual decent to good teams, Pastner knows how to coach, jury remains out to see whether he becomes elite

Wake: Toughest place to stand out. Clawson doing a respectable job. Hoops may just be too competitive

BC: For a northeastern school, there is no excuse for BC to NOT to have a very good hoops team. Addazio has issues (I hope they offer him a lifetime contract - I know, too much to ask for)
NCState: For a Carolina school, there is no excuse for NCState to NOT have a very good hoops team - AND they have some tradition, simply inexcusable that NCState is not in the annual hoops championship discussion. Football has room to grow.

Almost any duo, except the bottom two/three, would be respectable in any other conference.

Just my opinion but if your school has a National Championship that should put you ahead of others who don't.

RE: Ranking ACC FB/MBB Coaching Duos 2017 - CollegeCard - 02-26-2017 04:12 PM

I can't complain about Duke at 1. Coach K may be the best of all time and Cut made them respectable with a few seasons better than respectable, when they had been a doormat for decades.

RE: Ranking ACC FB/MBB Coaching Duos 2017 - Lenvillecards - 02-26-2017 06:40 PM

Perhaps the best way to come up with an accurate list would be to first rank the coaches?

I have no problem ranking FSU ahead of VT. The only thing I can figure about Clemson is it isn't Dabo, it's Brownell dragging him down.

That's my way of thinking as well and to keep it simple I just added the two rankings together and divided by 2 to get the overall score.

My ranking of ACC Football coaches:

01. Jimbo Fisher
02. Dabo Swinney
03. Bobby Petrino
04. Mark Richt
5a. vacant (this is where Brian Kelly would be if ND football in ACC)
5b. Paul Johnson
06. David Cutcliffe
07. Larry Fedora
08. Bronco Mendenhall (yes terrible first year at UVA, but did well at BYU)
09. Justin Fuente
10. Dave Doeren
11. Dino Babers
12. Dave Clawson
13. Steve Addazio
14. Pat Narduzzi (definitely a coach who could rise quickly, but only one season as a head coach, so not a lot to do a reasonable analysis against others on the list - and coaching in the easier division at this point)

ACC Men's Basketball Coaches

01. Coach K
02. Rick Pitino
03. Roy Williams
04. Jim Boeheim
5a. vacant (this is where Mike Brey would be if ND football in ACC)
5b. Jim Larranaga
06. Tony Bennett
07. Buzz Williams
08. Leonard Hamilton
09. Josh Pastner
10. Kevin Stalling
11. Brad Brownell
12. Danny Manning
13. Mark Gottfried
14. Jim Christian

Overall (if there is a tie between two teams than tiebreaker is football coach's rank)

01. Louisville (3 + 2 = 5/2 = score of 2.5)
02. Duke (6 + 1 = 7/2 = score of 3.5)
03. FSU (1 + 8 = 9/2 = score of 4.5)
04. Miami (4 + 5 = 9/2 = score of 4.5; tiebreaker goes to FSU)
05. UNC (7 + 3 = 10/2 = score of 5.0)
06. Clemson (2 + 11 = 13/2 = score of 6.5)
07. GT (5 + 9 = 14/2 = score of 7.0)
08. UVa (8 + 6 = 14/2 = score of 7.0; tiebreaker goes to GT)
09. VT (9 + 7 = 16/2 = score of 8.0)
10. SU (12 + 4 = 16/2 = score of 8.0; tiebreaker goes to VT)
11. NCSt (10 + 13 = 23/2 = score of 11.5)
12. Wake (12 + 12 = 24/2 = score of 12.0)
13. Pitt (10 + 14 = 24/2 = score of 12.0; tiebreaker goes to Wake)
14. BC (13 + 14 = 27/2 = score of 13.5)

If ND football was currently in the ACC, they would have tied UNC for 5th but won the tiebreaker, pushing UNC and everyone else down 1 spot.

In a few years time I suspect this list will change drastically, but this is how I see it now.

Cheers,
Neil

My list would be similar with only a few changes. On the football side I would swoop Richt & Bobby & I would have Fuente & maybe Narduzzi a little higher. On the basketball side I would put Roy ahead of Rick since he spent some time in the NBA. I would also have TB & Manning a little higher.
