You're a good man, Dan! Nice to meet you and coach Jackson last week at the Marriott.

Nice article. He sounds like just the thing this program needs, some quickness. Our biggest weakness this year has been (imo) not having a slasher. How many times have we got opponents in foul trouble by driving to the hoop? A player like Broome would have been huge against SMU since they have little depth. It's hard to win consistently taking so many jumpers which makes this season an even more magical feat.

I am curious about Broome mania. I see Ge'lawn Guyn was a real bit player here but a star a lower level ETSU (18.5 PPG). I here Quad a bit player here could transfer to a lower level and be a star as a senior.

Cane was a star at lower level Sacred Heart but won't be a bit player but a star?

Perhaps some of you who have seen him in practice know the reverse logic is not applicable. I sure as hell hope he is the next coming of Nick The Quick.

This is exactly what I wish UC had this year. Caupain is a great floor leader and doesn't make mistakes, but he also doesn't give them the opportunity for more easy baskets. Despite this being the best offensive team under Mick they are still a step below where they need to be to really compete with the big boys. Instead of trying to grind it out in the half court set they need to push the pace and get more easy transition baskets. Or even just pushing the pace in the half court set with more ball movement and more attacking the basket. And this all starts with the PG.

I too hope Cane is the guy to do that. There were a few times against Tulsa where UC could have pushed the ball out for a quick basket. I'm not complaining about a twenty point victory. But I do believe a few of those fast break baskets can demoralize many opponents and break a game open against a team that wants to hold the ball and play a half court offense. Louisville has always benefited from that and when combined with their press it's been a great formula for success.

We may miss having more experience at guard next year as we'll see new starters at both the 1 and 2 positions. Kevin Johnson has played really well of late--just what you would hope a senior would do knowing it's now or never for a great finish.

love this part:

“He’s really going to get Jarron Cumberland and Jacob Evans and guys like that a lot of open shots. Cane and Justin Jenifer together will have lightning speed. I’m looking forward to that.”

Even at the lower levels Cane Broome did significantly more as a soph than Guyn did as a 5th year player. As well we get Broome for year 4 and 5 of his college career. As well, note every player who leaves here to a lower level becomes a star. (Jermaine Lawerence)

With Cane Broome next year, I imagine Mick will tell us in the off season how he is going to really speed up the offense, maybe even use a little pressure.

We have Broome for 1 or 2 years?

Reports been since summer nobody at practice can stop broome. Mick even went as far as calling him smartest guard he's ever coached. Flint, satterfield, logan, dean, garcia, vaughn, sk, cash, troy, Evans, and kj are all legit guards Mick has coached, cane P4P has skills to be best of bunch. Broome would also be 23-24 old playing against 18-20 kids, he should dominate.

RE: New Column: Broome Ball - bulldog23 - 02-22-2017 12:26 PM

We top 5 team next year. Without a doubt best team since kenyon sr year. I might even put my $$$ on next year team to beat them. We might have one of oldest starting 5 in basketball next year

RE: New Column: Broome Ball - Nobones - 02-22-2017 12:40 PM

I thought I heard that Clark was asked at one time who the best player was on the team. He said Broome was.

RE: New Column: Broome Ball - RealDeal - 02-22-2017 12:47 PM

Ive only seen him once but .Broome was the best player at the preseason scrimmage.

It'll be interesting to see if any of the incoming freshman contribute. Keith Williams just won his conferences player of the year, Moore was the best three point shooter on the UA circuit, and at a recent coaches show I can't remember if it was Savino or Davis but they mentioned him blocking like 13 shots in an AAU game against future NBA players. Sounded real high on him but I don't see a lot of minutes available

I would agree this team next year assuming everyone sticks is the most offensively talented squad we've had. Not only because of Broome's scoring ability, but also a year of seasoning for our existing players. The young guys that's obvious, but a guy like Kyle sat out last year, so i think you will see him a much more seasoned presence on the floor and Gary as well. That said, a lot of the rankings/perception on next year's team to start will likely be in tune with how they do in the tourney this year. Momentum is everything.

Call me crazy but I personally think his presence has got in troy head. It a be stupid because he has zero effects on his playing time. Kinda interesting Mick has hyped troy up even after last season Mick said he was best in conference. You hear none of that now. For first time ever mick yells at troy and even takes him out of games. Troy and kj are mick 2 favorite players ever he just called a practice player his smartest guard ever. That was a shot Mick took.

That certainly has been the case on many occasions. However, I remember Mick talking about how naturally SK scored in practice his redshirt year and that was evident early. I remember talk last season of how difficult Washington was to guard and how well he could score the basketball from the Center position... this one seems pretty accurate. So the talk of how well these guys do in practice isn't always wrong.

I don't think you can generalize very effectively that way. Not exactly the same thing, but it's worth remembering that Nick The Quick was pretty much Nick the Nobody when he signed with UC. Here's an interesting quote from Huggs in 2011:

Quote:Bob Huggins, West Virginia

The one that got away: Keith LeGree. "I saw him every day in July [when Huggins was coach at Cincinnati]. Every single day. And he went to Louisville." The good news: Two years later, LeGree transferred to Cincinnati.

The best discovery: Nick Van Exel. "He had two offers: New Mexico State and Cincinnati. He had played at Trinity Valley [Community College] and the team wasn't very good, so he wasn't looked at much."
