ASUN women's lax to split into two leagues - one ASUN and the other Southern - NoDak - 02-13-2017 12:10 AM

The ASUN will have full members Jacksonville, Kennesaw St, and Stetson and affiliate members Coastal Carolina, Howard, and ODU. Surprised NJIT doesn't offer women's lax.

The Southern Conference will have Furman, Wofford, Mercer and affiliates Central Michigan, Detroit, and Delaware St. Wofford is starting women's lax. With just 1500 students, Jerry Richardson of the Carolina Panthers has given Wofford some impressive academic and athletics buildings.

Kent St will be starting lax later, presumably as an affiliate in the Southern conf. Cleveland St may also add it, as they have started men's lax.

Would assume the Big East with will be splitting it's women's lax league too, into a Big East one and an American one. Next year, ECU is starting a team so presume ODU would go American and Delaware St would move to the ASun.

Heh, poor Delaware State. That's a lot of traveling to have to do.

Bellarmine is also in the Southern for Men's LAX. They are also looking at adding women's soon which I presume they will be an affiliate in Southern Conference as well for women's LAX. I think they are hinting to go to D1 in the future since they offered more than 20 sports. They could go to ASUN or Big South for now. And if they do start football in the future? That team could already have a home for the ASUN/Big South football.

Bellarmine is no longer allowed to move up in single sports if DII sponsors it, which DII does in W lax. They would have to get a full offer from a DI conference and move all their sports. The ASUN might be a good match, as they can be a travel partner with Lipscomb.

Why doesn't more of the MAC offer lax?

RE: ASUN women's lax to split into two leagues - one ASUN and the other Southern - HuskyU - 02-13-2017 12:21 PM

Current Big East WLAX has:

Butler
Marquette
Nova
Georgetown

UCONN
Cincinnati
Temple

Vandy
Florida

Denver

How many teams are needed for a conference? ECU and ODU added to the AAC three would only be 5. Who else leaves?

NJIT cannot afford another thing in sports. They are number in division #1 in student support of athletics,95%.They are paying 1.5 million per month for the bond issue for the new events center. They are cancelling classes to make up the 4 million spring term short fall.

Denver would stay with the Big East. ODU would have to be an Big East affiliate rather than American. Pardon me as still counted Cincy as Big East. Six are needed for an autobid, if a single sport conference splits.

Cost supposedly. MAC teams are just getting off the ground in W Lax. Buffalo should have both M/W, but the MAC at the time of their addition required baseball. A MAC-Horizon women's lax league could get off the ground in a couple years.

I guess there's no way to keep the four Eastern affiliates together and someone's going to be an odd duck in the western-most conference of the two, but it seems odd that they couldn't accommodate Howard and Delaware State being together.

You need 6 for an NCAA bid.

This is true in most non-revenue sports. It's why you see conferences get to 5 members in a sport like Men's soccer form their own league with an associate. It give your schools a 1 in 6 chance (were all things equal).

Note: this is why I expect the WAC Men's soccer to split in 2018, as they will have 12 teams, 7 permanent members. It makes no sense to carry 5 associates and reduce the chances a full member gets a bid by almost 50%. Perhaps the MWC will finally sponsor the sport (5 members, 3 in the WAC, 1 in CUSA, 1 in P12) by snagging one of the WAC associate members (probably HBU) - that would probably force the P12 to take Sac State from the Big West to replace SDSU.

While a conference will want 10 members for stability and Basketball double round robin, for a lot of sports where not all schools sponsor, the aim is simply 6. You need 6 team (3 men, 3 women) sports and 6 individual sports to qualify as a conference.

Individual sports are super easy, as the only thing you do is host a conference meet. Adding an associate in one of those is nothing, just an entry fee. As a result only one team (Francis Marion Men's Golf) is an independent, as pretty much all conferences are open to associates. They are called individual sports because teams do not qualify for NCAA regional and national championships, but individual athletes (Golf, Tennis, Track, Swimming, Gymnastics, Cross Country, etc). Schools are pretty much on their own to build a schedule.

With no money in most of these team sports, the trend is for conferences of 6 to 8. And since not all schools sponsor there are a lot of collaborations between conferences to get everyone placed.

Would prefer to be with the American schools, but that Big East lineup is still a lot better than what we currently have with the ASun.

I'm a huge fan of the ODU athletic department and would like to see the Monarchs as a full AAC conference member. Local (enough) and very competitive across many sports...especially those that UCONN excels in. 04-cheers

I think the only reason Delaware State and Howard for separated is some bad blood between Coastal Carolina and the SoCon - CCU allegedly has been turned away from the SoCon.

I think the MW is only set to sponsor a sport if there are 6 full members supporting it. No reason to sport the sport if only 5 members are going to be the only ones supporting men's soccer.
The MW is pretty hardline on affiliates and besides the Hawaii football they only other affiliate is Colorado College which was added to help support scheduling.
If the MW was more open to affiliates, the they would probably have added more baseball schools since the MW only has 6 teams.

Yeah, the SoCon privates turn up their noses on Coastal, but yet the Belt doesn't have any problem with them.

with ECU American would have 4 and the BE (full members) would have 4
how they each get to 6? Denver and ODU to the BE and Vandy and Florida to American? Vica versa?
Florida ,Vandy and Denver remain with BE for 7 and ODU and ? to American for 6? or does ECU join as # 11 (or become indy)?

Or Florida/ODU to the American and Vandy/Denver to the Big East. There'd be that whole splitting conference teams thing again but it'd make sense for the BE to stay 100 percent private as much as it can (acknowleding that Temple and ODU are already BE for field hockey).

It'd be a big loss for the Big East. Florida and UCONN have been at or near the top of the conference in WLax and UCONN has dominated in Field Hockey (including National Titles in 2013 & 2014).
