2/11/2017 - Turning Point? - Petey Hodge - 02-12-2017 07:20 PM

So after two tough losses, many of us were starting to call for JJ's job.

Then we travel to UAB and blow out a solid team.

Question:
Is this the start of our "peaking" as we head down the final five game stretch? Good things ahead for the Monarchs?

OR

Were we UAB's "FAU" of the 2017. A total crap-the-bed effort at home... an outlier/fluke?

Now for my RR moment: UAB has lost three of the last four. Maybe they not that good?

We shall see. We have seen glimpses of solid games from all of our sophomores. Last night they put it all together in the same game. Granted, I don't expect to shoot 60-70% every game, but we did show what we are capable of.

And even better, they had fun. Winning seems to do that.

It's too early to say we've turned the corner. I thought they turned the corner after the offense explosion displayed during the Marshall and WKU road trip and we all saw what happened after that. Let's just wait and see how they play down the stretch.

I hope changes are made. I don't expect any though! Just guessing but I bet we start the same 5 with Talley coming off the bench. Baker and Taylor getting 30 plus minutes each and ODU playing the way we have all year. JJ is what he is...no changes expected!!!!!

I will say that Saturday Night's win felt different. Maybe I'm being optimistic, or maybe the team is setting me up for a final crash this season. We'll see.

I expect you are correct, but what could be changed is the attitude. There have been a few games where Taylor nor Baker made the defensive impact they could have made. Maybe now at least Jones will have a quicker trigger to take them out if we are sputtering. I was hoping for less minutes from Baker following the WKU game when we looked solid on offense and he was suspended. But he went back to playing his 30+ minutes almost immediately. So you are probably right, but maybe the rotations will start a little sooner.
Talley is too good to be sitting on the bench for extended time. I know he went through some sort of funk but he needs to play through it. And I think we all want to see Porter and Stith together more. That six minute stretch with them the other night had to be eye opening to Jones. They are a load for any team.

From my seat, and I'll talk more about this when I write up the 3,2,1, I don't think our gameplan was all that different than it usually is. Taylor's minutes were really limited due to foul trouble (as were Porter's), but Jordan played 33 minutes, and was in the game during the run where we put it away in the 2nd half (Jordan played 18 of the 20 second half minutes).

I think everyone needs to understand that we played the matchups. With UAB's 2 big men in the game at all times, it allowed us to play big. When we play Charlotte on Saturday, I would expect more possessions with Talley at the 4 than with Porter and Brandan in together. They run a 4 guard starting lineup.

RE: 2/11/2017 - Turning Point? - ODUCoach - 02-13-2017 09:11 AM

I don't have my notes with me, but from what I remember, Brandan and Trey played together for about five minutes (two of those with BJ and Zoran), and with them in the game, we extended the lead from 8 to 12. Not all that much separation, but I guess it was a key stretch for us.

RE: 2/11/2017 - Turning Point? - Oduniceguy - 02-13-2017 09:34 AM

Not going to place all of my hopes on one game. It would be great if this was the turning point, but I need to see more to make that assessment.

Yes, you are correct on this. Right after this Carver came in for Porter and the lead was over 20.

Maybe we should play our best lineup and let them adjust to us instead of us adjusting to them?

That!

(Can we make a deep run with the Jumbo Package of Porter/Smith/Talley/Caver/Stith?)

I have a strange feeling we will have about 20 wins and mabey 2 home games in the NIT which isn't a bad thing considering everything.

I don't think the NIT is going to happen.

Well I guess we will see. All teams receiving an invitation to the NIT are required to have a .500 or greater record.

Regular season champ gets picked for NIT if they don't go to NCAA. We won't be winning conference usa regular season so most likely will be a C-whatever tournament. Unless we win the CUSA tourney. We won't have enough quality wins for NIT I don't think.

RE: 2/11/2017 - Turning Point? - mac - 02-13-2017 05:03 PM

Last years NIT field. They always seem to take the Georgia Techs, Washingtons etc. we would be a real long shot at best coming from CUSA.
