Belarusian leader lashes out at Russia - john01992 - 02-06-2017 12:20 PM

http://www.seattletimes.com/business/belarus-threatens-to-prosecute-russian-food-safety-official/

Quote:In a live news conference that lasted about 7½ hours, Lukashenko alleged that the latest trade restrictions imposed by Moscow had been spurned by its concern about Belarus’ efforts to improve its ties with the West.

For years, Moscow has pushed Lukashenko to host a Russian air base, and he answered Friday with a categorical “No,” casting it as part of the Kremlin pressure on Belarus.

“What’s the purpose of such a base from the military viewpoint?” he said. “We don’t need it here. The base and the planes they want to put here is a demonstration.”

He argued that the base would have little meaning as the two nations already maintain close military cooperation.

In an indication of just how bad the current Russian-Belarusian spat has gone, Lukashenko assured his country that “there will be no war.”

“No one will occupy us, no one will send in troops,” he said. “We will protect ourselves and our independence.”

To add context here: Belarus is the one European country that still belongs in Russia's sphere of influence. Belarus has the longest tenured dictatorship in Europe who has been propped up by Russia during that time. So to see Belarus and Russian relations breaking down is quite significant.

So, this could be a good thing?

So Putin is pressuring him to put in someone more pliable.

Next destabilized state, joining Azerbaijan, Armenia, Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine.

Anytime we can flip a Russian supporting state to the west is a good thing.

Lukashenko isn't going to give up on Putin. Putin is his daddy and he knows it. His people loathe him and look with increasing jealousy at Poland and Lithuania.

Belarus is unimportant. Russia probably annexes them at some point in the next 20-30 years. Maybe when Lukashenko dies or gets overthrown.

White Russians are hardly different from regular Russians. Geopolitically the country is unimportant. And being part of Russia probably would make them more stable and a better life than being under a petty dictator, the last one in Europe.

I think we've found the country where Putin will install Trump once he's done screwing us over.

The guy who "secured peace for our time" 11 months before WWII.

Gotta love how the liberals still think Russia is going trigger WW3!

If you care so much, John, go over there and join up with Ukraine. Fight the good fight.

Yes that is funny. 11 months, just enough time for Hitler to set things for his invasion.

"What a man" that Chamberlain.

Afghanistan being your shining example, Joan?

1. that was the soviets which is a massive difference considering I was talking about the modern geopolitical situation.

2. we never flipped Afghanistan towards the west. what I meant by them flipping to the west was their integrating with NATO/EU.

3. Afghanistan only had a brief stint being under the thumb of the soviets unlike the Eastern European/Eurasia countries I was talking about.

4. The blame for Afghanistan and the rise of the Taliban has everything to do with their being a war torn country and our lack of foresight to help revive that country than the end of soviet influence.
