Recruiting -- ? - wal0001 - 02-01-2017 01:33 PM

This might rank as one of best ever classes, yet I do have concerns about the lack of signing linemen.. - 3 OL so far and only 1 DL

Heard they were going after some grad transfers.

Someone specifically said a Florida Gator OL.

Someone else also mentioned a late offer to a JC DT.

I'm sure the staff is working. Think they were adding players up to the 11th hour before last year.

Need to work hard on getting current roster guys bigger and tougher as well.

RE: Recruiting -- ? - idroot4russia - 02-01-2017 01:46 PM

Schad or someone else in the media in something I read recently (or maybe it was a thread on this board?) was asked about the lack of interior DL recruits and mentioned that we had 3 or 4 young guys on the roster already that they expected to step up next season. I think he mentioned that one of the guys was the prize of last year's recruiting class.

Edit, the guy who was mentioned as last years prize was John Tate, roster lists him as 6-4 290, he was a 4 star recruit in the 2016 class.

John Tate from Pine Bluff, AR is the DL from last year's class. He was the highest rated freshman that we signed in the 2016 class.

Okay, I have a stupid question... Why do graduate students have to transfer to play one more year? I mean, if a Memphis football player graduates with his bachelors degree, why can he not enroll in graduate school at Memphis and play his final year? Or can he?

Yes, you can still play at your original school as a graduate. The reason you see graduate transfers is that the rule of having to "sit out" a year doesn't apply if you're a graduate - the argument is you want to change schools not for athletic purposes, but to pursue a different post-graduate degree. Thus, if you're an undergraduate and want to transfer, you have to sit out a year, but if your a graduate and want to transfer, you can go and play immediately. Hope that makes sense.

We have a juco DL already on campus, and 1 signed freshman. Also waiting to see what 2 other recruits do that haven't shown yet on signing day. That goes with the other 3 Schad mentioned that are being counted on to stepup. And rumors of 1 more transfer. There is some talent coming. Good enough? We'll see. Could be an issue.

You can build solid Linemen win time if they are willing to work...They likely won't become NFL draft picks but they can be very solid college linemen...

Strength and size comes with time.

Perfectly. Thank you. And funny thing is, I think I already knew that (around the time we had Piano Man), but forgot the particulars between then and now.

Thought we should have signed more offensive lineman. We signed 2-3 Juco offensive lineman and only one freshmen. But still a good class

i have a friend who was a walkon at the 1aa level, he made the NFL as a lineman, it is possible for players to develop, especially linemen

Size is not the end all statistic of OL or DL.

Just like 40 times aren't the best indicator of the ability of a skill player.

BUT, an aggressive, hard hitting OL/DL that weighs 320 will usually smash the same level person weighing 280. The OL that we signed in this class, if you watch the videos on them, are hard hitting, follow through with blocks (usually ending in pancake blocks) and can move. I am VERY impressed in the OL we have signed and think some of them will be playing MUCH sooner than later.

Look for TE Jared Edwards to possibly move to T.
