National Signing Day 2017 - Lenvillecards - 02-01-2017 10:23 AM

Great day for the Cards so far, no bad surprises. Despite a late push from ND, Yeast signs with the Cards. All of our top recruits have signed.

The biggest surprise was getting Becton out of Virginia...thought he was VT Bound...waiting on Odom...we hold on to him very successful day...

Becton was a pleasant surprise, signing him over VT, Michigan & Oregon.

Getting Davis, out of Lakeland, Fl, was a very nice signing day pickup for Pitt.

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - CardinalJim - 02-01-2017 01:45 PM

Odom flipped back to Mississippi State...

One big draw back...only "ONE" projected DL and that is Malik Clark and he is a project...Petrino just said they project him as a inside DL but going to have to put on weight since he was basically a HS ILB.

Becton was an interesting case for VT.

From my understanding and reading in various place, the coaching staff slow-played his recruitment. You can choose to believe some of the following or not, chalk it up to sour grapes on the part of VT fans or whatever, but someone who does film review for The Key Play (whose evaluations are very fair, and willing to admit when he's wrong) saying the following about Becton:

"His offer was as much about repairing what was rumored to be a damaged relationship with Highland Springs (which had produced great Hokies like Macho Harris, the Hopkins Brothers and Jim Davis) than how much VT valued Becton's upside."

"He has ideal size (6'7, 340) but was completely dependent on his mass and upper body strength to block. His feet were below average for a DI offensive lineman, and his legs look like pipe cleaners. He would require a major rebuild in terms of building his lower body strength, and I still think he would be moved inside even if he develops."

"Massive RT prospect with tremendous upper body strength. Doesn't have a good base or core/lower body strength. Slow tip-toe feet with some cross over. No bend. Looks a bit like a bigger Jon Dunn. Expect him to get moved inside. Major concerns about his feet. Bench presses guys on blocks and digs his feet in. Red flag."

All that said, Becton certainly would have been welcome as a Hokie. It was a bummer to miss out on him, but I think he might end up being more of a project than his rankings and offer sheet might suggest. Still, a good get for Louisville.

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - Kaplony - 02-01-2017 02:18 PM

Anti-climatic day at Clemson. We were done with the 2017 class when Etienne committed the other night and the ten commitments who weren't early enrollees had their letters in by 9:00 AM. Biggest part of the day was having the grand opening of the football operations facility.

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - TerryD - 02-01-2017 02:33 PM

ND flipped a couple of guys late. Signed three new guys today. 20 total signees as of 1:30 Central.

Closed well, a good but not great class. Not so bad after a 4-8 debacle.

DL will be the focus on next years class like the OL was this year. We still have a couple spots left however for late qualifiers &/or transfers. Hearns was a late 4* signee for example. The signing period doesn't end today.

All freshman tend to need work, will see how he develops. He has 1 thing that you can't teach, size. Technique, strength & weight can be developed.

Mark Richt really pulled off an impressive NSD!

Miami Hurricanes
Team Rank: 13
Total: 24 players
5*'s: 0
4*'s: 10
3*'s: 14

That's a lot of 4-stars, boys!

9 ACC schools in ESPN's top 40 classes (not including Notre Dame, of course).

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - Kaplony - 02-01-2017 06:41 PM

One of the best parts of the day was all the free publicity ESPN gave us for the new football operations facility.

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - TexanMark - 02-01-2017 09:23 PM

Cuse low to mid 50s but 3 JUCO AA's not counted and a 5th Year player from Notre Dame

RE: National Signing Day 2017 - Lou_C - 02-02-2017 11:08 AM

FSU had a solid class at 6, could have been a bit better but no complaints from me.

Interesting note about FSU's class...FSU signed the number one recruit from six different states:

Texas
Virginia
Mississippi
North Carolina
Maryland
Maine

Yeah, Maine is kind of a fluke and that one kid isn't particularly elite, but that's still a really odd happenstance.

Also, the third year in a row FSU signed Virginia's number one prospect.
