Remember, we are not like WMU where other schools, like Minnie Sota, raided them of their 3 star recruits.

The key for us is: Do NOT reach at the end. Bank unused LOI for next December and have a bunch for mid-year JUCOs.

A mid-year JUCO who can do Spring ball + 2 seasons is almost as valuable as a 2 star frosh who may redshirt or be minimally effective for one or two years.

There should be less recruiting mistakes made with JUCOs because their JUCO ball is a higher level than h.s. ball.

Agree. At this point, based on their poor high school recruiting results, I'd like the staff to let the Juco world know we are 'all in' with a Juco heavy strategy. Let it be known that we welcome their guys, they have a shot to contribute early, and we provide a legit D1 program for them to showcase their talent.

From what I've seen (the proverbial view from 30,000 feet), my guess is that the staff has been better at evaluation than selling. That said, based on the program history, facilities, etc. we are at a competitive disadvantage with most G5 schools.

So it seems understandable that 'selling the program' would be an up hill climb.

There seems to be enough talent in JUCO that can be mined while most of the P5 programs concentrate more heavily on high schools.

Based on that, I'd think the staff is less likely to make recruiting mistakes with JUCO kids than h.s. kids.

sssh its only a few days until signing day ssh and a library has more buzz than this thread.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting (Thread II) - JonesGoddard - 01-27-2017 08:49 AM

You know why? Because there is literally nothing to report or say. It's all speculation. I'm tired of reading everyone's opinion on recruits or players that we have no idea about -- who may or may not come. Or, just want to go to a CC so that they can then go to a bigger program so they feel better about themselves.

Let's see what Feb. 1 does for us, other than that EMU football recruiting has zero buzz because there is zero actual journalism covering the team. Glad twitter was invented, what did you all do before this?

Also, what in the hell is going on with our administration? Why can't we seem to get anything right? They are complete idiots. Oh yeah, let's cut the football program but we can't even create an open, accessible, and welcome campus environment where the majority of our student athletes have a perception that this is a racist campus on top of talks of cutting the program. From the outside, I would not know what to think.

Okay, Happy Friday, y'all. Sorry about the rant.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting (Thread II) - emu steve - 01-27-2017 09:40 AM

I don't worry about the lack of buzz. Buzz is mostly marketing (even though not in the traditional sense) and marketing/buzz with nothing behind it is simply talk.

It won't be until signing day (but really about 8 or 9 months before we know what we really have.)

As I've suggested before, at the G5 level, everyone is going after mostly 2-star recruits. With 2-star recruits one is hoping to find the hidden gem, etc. who will 'over achieve' or the kid who was overlooked for some reason (e.g., WR who played on a team with poor quarterback play or a RB playing behind a bad OL).

This is where evaluation comes in. I remember when Chris Webber was in high school. Some player played against him. Another player might have gone up against a 6' 3" 180 lbs. forward who couldn't jump over the Manhattan phone book. Lot of recruiting is apples and oranges and a LOT of mistakes are made, esp. in h.s. FB recruiting.

Again, as I suggested earlier, if we don't give out all our scholarships, Dec. 2017 is a great time to pick up those very, very valuable mid-year JUCO recruits who have played 2 years, do spring ball and have 2 years of eligibility left. Good value in my book.

Recruiting is usually an exciting time for fans of a football program and have a momentum of its own in terms of program image.

This class so far is the type of class I would expect if CC and his staff were hired in December or early January not a class for a coach and his staff who are going into their fourth year.

Actually 247 has us ranked as 11 in the MAC but that actually is an overestimate because the commits they have listed there aren't accurate both those that are gone and those who committed who are not listed.

It is like a honeymoon in a marriage...

Once the buzz is over, then the 'fun' begins... Reality sets in.

I like recruiting but it is about half way between reality and fantasy.

We might say we need 2 CBs and we get 2 CBs. We are assuming that the recruits match up or equate to the need, when in fact a 2 star recruit could be a starter or a complete wash out. If we could know that no coach would sign the kid who will wash out and never make the 2-deeps.

You forgot the alternative facts.

I'm not thinking of alternative facts.

Most G5 recruiting is like a college who admits 100 frosh who have say an ACT of 21. How many will become excellent students? very good students? good students? Not good students? Poor students?

Or in the NFL draft. How many 4th round draft choices will pan out? 5th rounders? etc.

There is SO MUCH uncertainty. We aren't talking blue chippers.

BTW, because of this uncertainty and the difficulty scouting h.s. FB players, a very good walk-on program can be a plus. There are a LOT of errors made in FB recruiting, more so than MBB.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting (Thread II) - EagleTough - 01-27-2017 11:14 AM

Creighton and staff aren't some mystical 'evaluators', haha. EMU recruiting results are bottom of the barrel in the MAC, period. Justify around it any way you want, but those results are not conducive with long term program, or possible championship, success.

The staff is good except for this one glaring problem. Can't wait till signing day is over so we can end this thread and talk about what is happening in camp, etc.

Of course we'll all still support the program, and show up for as many games as possible............just a little sad.

As much as in my heart I would like to disagree with your assessment I can't disagree. At most now I'm hoping for some last minute surprises that will help us this coming season.

On a more positive note.....would love to see this guy run 10-15 run-pass-option, and zone reads per game this year.
