Quick thoughts on game - Duke Dawg - 01-09-2017 05:55 AM

1) once we went up 21-0, the game was truly never in doubt. We threw 2 passes the entire game after that point. It's almost like we went in to kill the clock mode from that point on knowing full well this team had won the title. Made the 2nd half a little less exciting and probably more so for the neutral. Everyone knew there was only going to be one winner

2) speaking of winners, there should be absolutely no discussion from anywhere who the best team in FCS was this season. We were far above everyone else. If it weren't for a slew of literally last second TD's (YSU was the 4th TD scored against us in the last 30 seconds of a game this year when we were already up by at least 10), no FCS team would have been within one score of us. not one time the entire season did we have to sweat out a final possession or two with a team having a chance to even tie us.

3) I thought YSU was the best D we played against all year. Way better than NDSU's. Was hard to gauge Villanova, since we barely had Schor in that game. Even thought Abdullah still looked like a beast in the first half when the game was still being won, YSU was on him fast. And hit hard. A few runs that they stopped khalid on would have been huge gains if their guys didn't make textbook tackles. There was not as many tackles being broken Saturday as in earlier games. They were not soft.

4) We will miss our senior WR's. No one really stands out above all because they are all so good. Ravenal, Domo, Davis. these guys are constantly getting open and all have great hands. they are a big part of our offense. We'll need some guys to step up to replace them next year. If they do, we will be unstoppable on offense again.

Re: 4 - I fully expect TE Jonathan Kloosterman to be an anchor for the offense next year. His presence in the running (blocking) and passing (blocking/catching) game will make the transition much easier for any new WRs stepping up for more action.

Some prophetic words here as reported by WHSV's Andrew Clay on Sept. 15: "From a blocking stand point he does a great job, he never quits," Central Connecticut State head coach Pete Rossomando Saturday after JMU's 56-21 win. "He's a good football player. I bet you he's a an all CAA kind of player by the end of the year."

RE: Quick thoughts on game - Wear Purple - 01-09-2017 09:07 AM

-YSU defended Schor's running very well. Normally, he's able to break free for at least a 10 yd gain a few times a game. He barely got 3 yds (and had to work for it) the few times he attempted to run with it. I was glad to see he still ran with it though as you have to do that to keep the D honest.

-I'm glad Davis' TD catch was overturned and corrected. Going up 14-0 there was huge. I was nervous that they were going to leave the negated TD call stay as-is. I still think JMU goes on to dominate, but that was a momentum builder right there and potentially avoided a missed field goal and wasted possession.

-Our D-Line was terrific. We did not need to bring more than 4 guys. They got pressure most of the entire game while blowing up holes and giving YSU's running backs absolutely nowhere to go. Once we got them more one-dimensional in catch-up mode, the game was really over.

-Additional thanks to the team for covering 9 pts. :>)

-The 2 YSU defensive ends are worth their hype. They both likely have a good future ahead of them at the next level. Having said that, I thought our two OT's did a superb job. With a strong senior season next year, Stinnie could get some looks from NFL clubs moving forward. Not bad for a former walk-on.

-As others have mentioned, the progression of our defensive backs in man coverage over the course of this season is remarkable. You rarely over the last 6-7 games saw any opposing WR's without a blanket of our DB's on them.

Consider that our other OT (Chavious) is just a freshman and he has, other than the FS penalties/noise related blocking issues against NDSU, been absolutely dominant. DOMINANT! I look forward to his progression, he has the makings of being among our best ever OL.

...

Roughly the 13 minute mark of the third quarter:

"B. SCHOR rush for 25 yards to the YSU22, 1ST DOWN JMU (Moss, Avery)."

Thanks. I had obviously forgotten about that play.

Chavious got absolutely trucked by #11 on one play in the 3rd, causing the pocket to collapse and resulting in a sack. Otherwise, he looked pretty good.

I was looking through the roster yesterday, I think we return 8 starters on defense and 6 on offense. Something like that.

Otherwise, your assessment was pretty much on target.

RE: Quick thoughts on game - Duke Dawg - 01-09-2017 10:32 AM

i hate how the NCAA counts sacks as rushing yards.

really distorts the numbers.

even YSU, it says they had only 21 yards rushing, but if you take out the sacks, they had close to 100 on the ground

so for Schor, he had numerous positive runs. But the sacks count against him I believe. So that hurts his final number

RE: Quick thoughts on game - Dukes84 - 01-09-2017 10:54 AM

Do we know that Alls is gone for next season? To me, he was JMU's most physically talented receiver this past season (and I believe he made third-team all conference). We've also got good receiving candidates in Ish Hyman, Jon Miller, Robbie Walker (was a three star recruit at one time, I had thought), Logan Boyd and the Stapleton kid, in addition to some of the younger guys we don't really know about yet.

We're going to need Chavious, and several others like him, to step up. Maybe we can get some transfers in, but our 2017 recruiting class has one OL, and only one other person over 250 lbs (a DT).

Awesome win this weekend. Re-load, and let's take it to 'em again.

I'm not worried about Chavious as he was thrust into the RT job and showed his potential. Will be curious to see how Patrick does at C with more time to develop and Jahee Jackson at RG replacing Matt Frank.

Really like the potential of the OL especially under the watch of Coach Powell

RE: Quick thoughts on game - JMUSteeler - 01-09-2017 12:20 PM

A parent of a current OL said it looks pretty solid that we have a transfer OL coming in, though he was reluctant to go into much detail for obvious reasons. Hopefully that comes to pass, though I think we have some strong candidates already on the roster for the current spots.

RE: Quick thoughts on game - Duke Dawg - 01-09-2017 12:29 PM

we will have tons of kids looking to transfer in I'd bet.

this April after spring ball is over and people see where they shake out in FBS land, i'd expect 4-6 FBS transfers coming our way. And some good ones too.

RE: Quick thoughts on game - Wear Purple - 01-09-2017 01:35 PM

Within reason of course, but you can never have enough depth on the O-Line (and D-Line for that matter).

Each player has an opportunity to earn his scholarship back. Whether or not Alls attempts to earn remains to be seen. From what I understand, he may be the only player for whom this wasn't his first offense. (the others coming at Duke)

After JMU went up 21-0 in the 2nd qtr threw almost half of the passes, 5 of 12, 3 in the 2nd qtr after going up 21-0, 2 in the 2nd half). It seems like threw way less because Schor started 7 of 8 then finished 0-4.

Part of the reason for trying to run out the clock was after the 2 serious defensive injuries to Holloway & Ezeagwu things were awfully thin on talent & experience (as far as backups) at about 5 defensive positions. Literally had no one left backing up at LB. For the 2 ILB positions had Hereford suspended, Holloway bad injury. Had to move Hawkins from the hybrid OLB position to go along side Steele. That left no one to back up Steele, Hawkins & Wellons for those 3 LB spots. And since Brown's backup at SS, Johnson, was "absent" its not like there was anyone to shift down from the SS to the hybrid LB position. And Ankrah's backup at the KAT Ezeagwu was out. Things were awfully thin at 5 positions on defense- no backups left with any experience outside garbage time. Given that and the lead the best thing to for JMU to do was try to run out the clock.

RE: Quick thoughts on game - South Main - 01-09-2017 02:19 PM

We had a lot of key contributors that are Juniors and Sophmores and love how despite the injuries and suspensions the last few games, we never missed a beat. We seem to have the depth like a FBS program and I looove it!

RE: Quick thoughts on game - DooX - 01-09-2017 02:50 PM

After going up again by 21 in the second half, I definitely got the sense that the coaches pulled the reigns in. We probably felt like there was little chance they were going to drive the field three times on us to tie the game, so not making mistakes took precedence over scoring. The only times I really got nervous in the 2nd half was when we had to punt. They got that tip in the 1st half and came darn close a couple times in the 2nd. If they had gotten a punt block & TD then things start to get interesting.

Their DEs lived up to the hype. I actually felt like our tackles struggled with them and is another reason why so few passes were called. Getting the lead, being able to run a bit, and limiting obvious passing situations were all huge.

All aboard the John Miller bandwagon for next year.
