...The Group of 5 Ediots...sinking fast.... - Nugget's Ghost - 01-03-2017 10:40 AM

During a Knight Commission meeting in October, former Tulane president Scott Cowen said "the entire ship is sinking" in college sports because increasing athletic costs are unsustainable for many universities.

"Will [college sports] sink in five years or 10 years or 15 years? I don't know," Cowen said in October. "Where do you think this is all headed? Because I would suggest it's not headed in a good place for every one of us regardless.

The division is already here. Texas A&M brought in over $200 million last year. Sure we're going to compete with Texas A&M. Nobody in any G5 conferences can compete with the top of the P5. It's as simple as that. It is time for us to move on. The reason Sankee is so upset about this is because we will take more of their money than we do now with a playoff. Plus it will force them to have a playoff. And when that happens just like the NFL every team will have a chance and the Alabama's of the world don't want that. They love their little monopoly. They love their take of most of the money. And They love not to have to compete as much for it.
The G5 is simply spinning its wheels right now. With nothing to play for we have nowhere to go.

Quote:On average, athletic departments at public Group of Five universities get 57.5 percent of their revenue from public subsidies (student fees, direct and indirect institutional support, and state money).

This is a big part of the problem. If the NCAA would put some limits on that, there would be far fewer schools reaching for their share of the pie and otherwise weighing down the system thus necessitating new divisions. Seriously, if you can't self-sustain any more than 42 1/2 % of your expenses, you shouldn't be playing at that particular level.

Help me out here. What is determined as direct and indirect support ??

I think direct is scholarship-related expenses & cash whereas indirect covers things like facility upkeep.

Well in simple terms it's what they get and we don't.
The Florida schools as an example have no more fan base support than the we do, but their students must support anyhow. It's done by tuition add-ons for 'athletics' we are not allowed to do by state law. Schools with huge student populations (FU-s, UCF and South Fla) start out with a built in budget probably greater than ours before they ever sell a ticket.

See.....This is the kind of stuff that drives me crazy about what goes on at Southern Miss. "Hey, we can't do this and we can't do that because state law says we can't". Why in the frig doesn't anyone raise hell enough to get ridiculous laws like this dropped from the books ?? All this moaning and groaning about not having anything, then sit around with a thumb up your rectum and say...."Oh well. That's the way it is". Bull !!!

That would be wonderful. Now try and get it through an ole miss and moo u dominated state legislature. Good luck with that.

RE: ...The Group of 5 Ediots...sinking fast.... - CajunEagle - 01-03-2017 06:03 PM

Now that's the excuse that's been going around for eons. Looks like your saying that neither would like to increase their budgets, along with the 3 HBCs and everybody else. This crap of "We can't do jack squat because Ole Miss and State reps won't let us" is a total crock. It's called negotiation.....use it, or vote somebody in that gives an aeronautical seduction.

We have more alums in the Legislature than OM. Problem is most don't care about USM.

..yep, they just don't give a crap...lazy and incompetent...been sayin that crap for 20 years...damm, 20 years..Louisville got it done and we just sang that same song..."weez po and ignant and it can't be done".

If you've ever met the people who we've had in charge here you know what I'm saying is right...some of the most inept and unimpressive human beings I've ever met.

Ole Miss and MSUx are loading their coffers with SEC TV money and National Championship money and they don't have to worry about state budget woes, they know the best thing that could happen to either of them would be for USM to "starve to death" and they could split the few recruits that our guys happen to get from them in football and baseball.

It actually sank (yes - past tense) extremely slow. It was slow and agonizing for those of us that saw it coming as soon as the terms "major" and "mid-major" were introduced way back when. It's now somewhere at the bottom of the ocean along side the Titanic with very little hope of survivors. And if we don't get the AD hire right this time, we will not be one of the survivors for sure.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but all of us in the G5 (and some in the P5, they just don't know it yet) are the walking dead. Just zombies in fact. Sure the big boys use us for target practice and to position themselves for the big money and it will continue as long as we let it. What would happen if next year we just announced we're not playing them any longer in them rigged system and started a playoff?
Best we could do is make our own rules at this point and that may be a playoff in the end if the money was there. We are what's left of amateur college athletics and there are a lot of us that would like to see a REAL playoff. And they are concerned we just might do it.

And we should...........

Finally some are getting the message I posted long ago about a new division, and new more regional conferences. The P5 are nothing more than 3 year and out training camps for the NFL. No reason to stay with that group. We never have been able to afford it, and never will. Let them play each other, instead of the easy 3 wins they put up each year........

RE: ...The Group of 5 Ediots...sinking fast.... - Nugget's Ghost - 01-04-2017 12:37 AM

I always have a good chuckle at what ole Monken said when this crap first started...

Quote:Go ahead [P5 Conferences] and do your deal - you guys split all the pie - but don't go playing anyone else. You just play each other every week. Just have a nice NFL crossover where you play each other. Then when you fire up a nice 7-5, and you're at a pretty good place and they fire you, they won't be real excited about it, because you won't have those games that they've been able to win. Plain and simple.

Some of those teams that get bowl eligible when they go 2-6 in their league and they go 6-6. Well, you'll be 2-10, or 3-9, and it won't feel so damn salty.

I always loved how straight to the point Monken is....miss that guy being around!

RE: ...The Group of 5 Ediots...sinking fast.... - Nugget's Ghostbuster - 01-04-2017 10:15 AM

It will collapse at its current pace. The mistake we will make as a state and university is to sell our soul financially to try and compete with the bigger schools. It would be like USM taking out a 30 year mortgage on a million dollar house with zero down with a household income of 30K. At some point, the housing bubble will burst.

-TV revenue provides over 80% of NCAA revenue. With the changes in media access and cable subscriptions falling, this will impact TV rights. Its one of many reasons our new TV deal went south. Supply and demand.
-Decrease in high school football participation due to exposed long term damage. Parents are opting for other sports due to the concussion crisis. Less demand for football will continue to trend the wrong way.
-Escalating salaries and demand for state of the art facilities. As you make less money due to decreasing revenue streams, your staff salaries are only going up. Then you have to fix or replace aging facilities.
-Online education. With the ever increasing access to online degrees, you will see a trend of decreasing enrollment across the country. Less students equals less ticket sales equals less revenue.

In short, USM will make the decision to drop to a less competitive level in order to sustain the operation of the school. It will promote itself as focused on education and not athletics. We wont be alone. Its just facts. Supply vs demand.
