Think its worth noting Savannah State has made the most three pointers in D1 at 184, averaging 15.3/game, at a 37.3% clip

This may be a tougher game than the record suggests. Savannah St is 3-9 but they have been on the road a lot. They have losses at Iowa, Iowa St, Memphis, San Diego St, Oregon and William & Mary. But surprised Oregon St winning 93-90, also on the road. OSU isn't a world beater this year, but still a good win for them.

Are we still hanging our heads from the UT game? I hope not. If we can win, 10-3 going into conference play ain't too shabby.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State - Flippmb - 12-27-2016 11:54 AM

There were some good signs from the UT game:

A. J. Merriweather played with great effort, great defense, and opportunistic rebounding and scoring -- just what we've come to expect from him. Early in the season, it looked like he was trying too hard to be "The Man." He simply needs to play like he did against the Vols.

Desonta Bradford showed again that he can take over a game for stretches at a time. The Vols summoned some lights-out, excellent defense during the final minutes to stop him from taking it all the way to the basket. The Bucs need to find more ways to take advantage of Desonta's penetration and the double-teams and defensive gambits opposing teams are forced to employ to deny him that finishing shot.

David Burrell, again, showed great potential to be a real team cog by the end of the season. He's been up and down this year, as is often the case with juco transfers, but as he showed against the Vols, he's got the requisite skills.

Hanner Mosquera-Perea showed improvement and played one of his better games. In addition to the aforementioned up-and-down struggles that transfers often experience, Hanner and Tevin Glass both went more than a year out of actual competition. It would have been a real surprise if they hadn't struggled at times. Hopefully, they will both settle in nicely as the season progresses.

Bottom line: All the big goals remain for what can be a very special season.

Good stuff flip. I think thats an accurate analysis after the ut game, I too would like to see more consistency out of Hanner and Tevin, especially finishing at the rim

We had faith in our team before the 22nd, and we've still got faith in them! Go Bucs!

What this team misses is a true distributor or As some call them a point guard. I agree with all said but Desonta needs to learn to pass the ball when defenses collapse on him. Happened twice at the end of the UT game. If he could have passed to the open man might have been a differat outcome. This in no way should be construed as criticism of any one. Just an observation.

Isn't that like saying no offense.. But? he had 8 assists against Tennessee and could have had a double double if people had hit their shots, Maybe he doesn't pass in lane because he has more confidence himself then his teammates hitting a shot? I mean look at how many open looks ETSU has missed, that game was a great example.
He is averaging 4.8 assists. 2 to 1 A/TO (58vs29) I will take it.

Not sure why you highlighted those statements. I don't mean it as criticism but take it however you wish. As far as the assist numbers I don't really consider throwing the ball to someone on the wing who hits a 3 point shot as a good indicator of great assists. If I have time I'll review the UT game and see how many assist fit that description. And I know it's officially an assist but does it really tell you anything. And you're right that if some others had made their shots it wouldn't have matter

I've been in town over the holidays and was at the UT game. When I get a chance, I want to rewatch the game as well.

Anyhow, I want to us come out in this game and shut them down from beyond the three point line. In their face at all times.

Anyone know what's up with Julian Walters? He hasn't played in the last 2 or 3 games, and his numbers were about the same as a couple others. Academics? Practice effort? Could be as simple as poor production, but didn't seem much different to me.

I assumed he had an injury. He's shown some offensive flash the Bucs could use.

It was a wrist injury. They talked about it on the broad ast the other night.

Does anyone know if there will be a coach's show on radio tonight?

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State - ETSUfan1 - 12-28-2016 10:31 AM

Pretty sure I heard there isn't one this week.

This is a game they should have a fairly good shot at winning, though of course anything can happen i the end

Even though Savannah State isn't exactly a powerhouse program, they're not a bad team either, hardly the worst. A win here would see us at 10-3 going into conference play, the first time I can recall that happening in at least a decade or so if not longer. To put it in perspective to last year, win #10 didn't come til around the middle of January during the home game against VMI. which at the time pushed the team record to 10-6.

While there's still a lot of basketball to play, a win tomorrow could put the team into a very stable position going into conference play, knowing they've crossed a key milestone early on.

At present, looks like ETSU, Chatt, Greensboro, and Samford -- hopefully ending in that order.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State - swvabucsfan - 12-29-2016 02:10 PM

Savannah State allows more points than anybody in the country - even the Citadel: opponents average 104.4. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/146/p7
Savannah State scores the 18th most points in the country at 86.2. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/145
Do you think they might run and gun a little?

This is a bad team at 3-9, but they can put points on the board. They are not worse than Lees-McRae

Hopefully the Bucs can forget the holidays and take care of business.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State - shampoo - 12-29-2016 05:08 PM

The Bucs will be ready. They only lost by 4 to Tennessee, a much better team with true major talent. Number 10, let's go!
