Jeff Durden - VT_Spider - 12-26-2016 05:25 PM

Spider fan here, im here to ask y'all what yalls opinion is on Jeff Durden. I understand he used to be yalls OC and from what I have heard he wasn't too great at jmu. So let me know in a non hostile and disrespectful way, what are we getting in Durden? Also I'm a student at VT and saw the Georgia tech game this year and y'all are getting a great back in Marcus Marshall, he ran all over us this year.

Jeff Durden - JMUNewbill - 12-26-2016 05:30 PM

Offense from Durden: Step 1 - have entire team stare at the sidelines for ten seconds to get the play, step 2 - begin snap count, step 3 - call in audible from sideline for another 10 seconds, step 4 - run middle for three straight downs, step 5 - punt

You're a Spider fan attending tech? What makes you think we'd respond with hostility and disrespect? Gees, don't be so cynical. It's not like we're as bad as those heifers at tech that probably judge your taste in sweater vests and the correct plural possessive tense use of y'all. 03-wink

Great, sounds like we made an awful hire at OC. Losing Rocco just wrecked us, good god I hate UR.

RE: Jeff Durden - JMad03 - 12-26-2016 05:52 PM

In 2008, which was our best year under Durden, we had a great offense. It was run by Landers, who was one hell of an athlete. It was never the same after Landers left. I do believe Mickey had a LOT of say when it came to the offense. After '08, it was beyond frustrating. I cannot tell you how many times we were screaming at them to hike the ball. As Newbill said, a LOT of sideline checks. Not only that, but many people here, myself included, wanted Durden gone.
No idea how his offense was after he left, but I think he had more influence at Chattanooga. I think his results there are far more predictive on how he will be at UR than when he was with us.

RE: Jeff Durden - BleedingPurple - 12-26-2016 05:54 PM

What has been stated is the truth, however, I firmly believe Durden had his hands tied by our head coach. Mickey Matthews' game planned to shorten the number of plays both teams would have in order to keep the game tight. I'm not really sure we got to see Durden at his best.

RE: Jeff Durden - Potomac - 12-26-2016 06:55 PM

I agree that you should look more to his offensive results at UTC for an idea of what you may get at UR than looking all the way back to his time at JMU. Rumor is that Mickey wouldn't let Durden make the calls he wanted to make and it showed on the field. One word to describe 2009 to whenever he left (I don't remember which year) is, frustrating.

RE: Jeff Durden - BSKB 24 - 12-26-2016 07:05 PM

He won the National Championship in 2004 and was ranked number 1 in the nation all of 2008. He was great at VMI. He is a winner. You got a great hire.

I always thought Durden was solid. Pistol vs. VPI&SU was his idea.

He is a lot of fun to play golf with, too.

In fairness, there were a lot of O-coordinators that followed that trend like sheep to slaughter. It was a horrible era all over (our 2008 season notwithstanding). Durden will do fine for you. He was handcuffed by Mickey when he was at JMU. That said, if he was really superb, he'd have been a more serious candidate for the Chatty job.

It was all over college football. Durden is a very good coach and will work very hard. He has a very good eye for talent and will continue to recruit GA very well.

I always thought you were a JMU plant troll on their boards... are you sure you're not?

Yep. After his 1st season the UTC offenses were always in the too 1/3 of I-AA offenses. And Total Offense got better every season.
UTC Scoring/Total Offense
13' 64th/68th
14' 20th/40th
15' 39th/35th
16' 16th/30th

What makes you say that?

RE: Jeff Durden - JMUNation - 12-26-2016 11:47 PM

He interviewed for the HC at JMU and finished 3rd. Houston wanted him as the OC. Durden's pride would not allow him to accept the job. He stayed at UTC.

Durden is incredibly loyal. To this day, he will not bad mouth Mickey. In 2004 with Clayton struggling with his health, a mostly absent Mickey left Durden alone and the result was a NC. In the following year, Mickey inserted himself into the offensive play calling and JMU missed the playoffs. That was the beginning of so many frustrating years for JMU fans as Mickey handcuffed Durden's playcalling and Durden played the role of loyal soldier.

Durden is a good OC which is why Huseman is bringing him to UR with him.

Ha, that never bothered me. What bothered me was the "get a lead and then try to run the clock for 45 minutes" style of play calling. I'd imagine that was Mickey though.

RE: Jeff Durden - JMUNation - 12-27-2016 12:02 AM

It was Mickey the offensive genius.

Missing the playoff in 05 wasn't because of the offense. The year after the NC JMU had their 2nd highest scoring avg under MM. The 3 year stretch of piss poor offense (2009-2011) followed by 2 years of avg to above avg (2012-2013) didn't start until 5 years after the NC. IF MM began handcuffing Durden in 2005 as you claim it obviously wasn't an issue until 2009.

JMU offense:
2004 28.1 ppg (28.5 regular season)
2005 35.5 ppg
2006 32.4 ppg
2007 33.3 ppg
2008 38.1 ppg
2009 22.0
2010 17.7
2911 22.2
2012 28.8
2013 28.2 (O'Cain)
